I have just started on making one of these for a Father's Day gift but I can't figure out how to fold it. It may be imposssible to explain it in words but can anyone help me. It looks like I have a big flying bird right now.

I was thinking of doing this for Fathers Day too! I remember seeing some things on the Carol Duval show on HGTV. I did a search and found these accordian books. I'm not sure exactly what you are trying to do, but maybe this will help it has instructions for 4 different types. I think I like the first one, but I have to figure out how to make it larger.

If you do a search on the Carol Duval show and put in these episode numbers there are other books to make:

episode 1350 has a signature book
episode 1019 has an accordian book with a polymer clay cover, it would work with using cardboard and covering it with paper too.
episode 1564 has a star card which I was another design thinking of using for Fathers Day

Also on diynet.com episode DIC - 158 had something interesting on it too.

Thanks for taking the time to help me on this. I will check out those sites a little later. I also found one on exploringwomanhood.com under projects of the month. This is the one I started that used 12x12 papers and I can't get folded right, it's not working like an accordian to me.:p

Have you had any luck? One of the books on that link I gave you is the same as the one from the exploring womanhood site. I think the folding directions are better on Carols site, but it is a little easier to see how they go together on the exploring site. I tried it out on scrap paper and it worked for me. I can try to exlain the process if you are still having trrouble.

Chessie this is the same album I was refering to. The directions on your site uses paper with a different color on each side so it is a little easier to see how they go together and fold!

Actually I am still having trouble. I have it folded and put together, it is the folding into book part that I still can't get. I liked the sites you gave me Twigs.

Maple, I hope this helps, I'm not sure if I can explain it well, but I will try. First just double check with the diagram to see if the individual sheets are attached right, this was the part I had the most problem with, the diagram from your site shows it better. Also be sure all your folds are creased well. What I did was to lay out the papers so that the 2 pieces on the ends are the "valleys" and the one in the middle is the "mountain". Then I took hold of the sections that are the furthest out on each side (left and right) and as I brought them toward each other, the folds in the paper atomatically collapsed.

It may also be better to start over. A few years back I was trying to make the German paper folded stars and I just could not get it to work right. After a few days of trying, I finally got rid of what I had, got out fresh paper and started over, and it worked out.

Good Luck!

I think your right, I need to start over. Maybe I didn't do it right to begin with. Did you make the 12X12 one and did you use cardstock or lighter paper. Just covering everything here. Thanks again.

Because I was just testing it out I used plain computer paper cut into 8 1/2" x 8 1/2" squares. It is probably easier to try out on thinner paper first.

I got it finally, Twigs.:Pinkbounc I did a smaller one and then went back to bigger one. I still had a little trouble with it but had DD sitting at the table with me. I handed it to her and said help me figure this out and with all our hands we got it. Now I am afraid to undo it.:hyper:
