Accessing the Internet

I am staying for 3 weeks at Pop Century and would like to occasionally, for small periods of time, access the internet. I was thinking I would get a free trial of PeoplePC or AOL and use that along with the $0.75 it would cost each time I called. Here are my questions:

1) What would be the best dial-up to get for this short period of time? I currently have a Comcast cable internet, so it's not like I have a dial up service already.

2) How do I know before I go if the company has a local number from the resort?

3) Do I load the new isp up on my laptop before I leave home?

4) Has anyone done this before?

I think this will be a lot less expensive than the $9.95/day charge for the high speed internet. I will just need it occasionally to check email and a few other things.

Any advice is appreciated!!

no help here. personal decision i suppose.

you ask them. there's a rather old list of providers and local numbers at allearsnet here: http://www.allearsnet.com/pl/access.htm but it's going to be your responsibility.

it'd be a good idea to make sure it all works prior to going down there.

it's not an unusual idea. but just to clarify, the $9.95 is for 24 contiguous hours, not per day (per se). so if you order it at 11 pm one night, it's still there until 10:59 pm the next night. and of course you don't have to order it every night.

I did the 9.95 thing. I'd order it like at 9pm one night and check my email, and then check it again the next day before 9pm. I thought it was too confusing to worry about phone charges and stuff. Plus, dial up is SOOOOO slow. I was there for 7 days and only spent 30. I had to be on the computer EVERY DAY because I was in an online class at the time.

Well I dont know how it works with certain ones, but if you just needed to check email once in a while, and not use anything heavy on bandwidth, you could just connect and leave a program open that accesses the internet every so often and maybe you would'nt get timed out, meaning you'd just have to pay the .75 once :)? Now I guess that would mean leaving your computer out though, huh? So that's probably not a very good idea.

I always buy a Calling Card with PrePaid Minutes and it works great
for a quick email check everyday.
If I do have to correspond with someone by Email, I just create a
word Document before going on Internet and just click and paste message
so that I won't have to waste minutes, This is very easy to do.
It only cost .75 cents per day and it's much more secure than leaving your
PC on in the Room.
Sam's Club has good Calling Card Prices.:thumbsup2

When we go, we usually stay 7 days. I get the $9.95 internet. I usually get the internet twice in the 7 days we are there. When I get the internet me and my wife use it and the kids play games, so we get our money's worth.
Going this route might not be the cheapest, but to me it is the simpliest. No need to install special software, it is all built into the OS.

At our last stay at POFQ last January, there was no charge for local calls, and also a dataport attached to the phone. I just let AOL load up the local phone numbers and away I went.
