I have not been able to get a wheelchair accessable room at WDW for my family. One of my three children at home uses a wheelchair. We need more than a king-size bed. Help!!

Hi and welcome to the Disboards.

I assume you've got a similar problem that I do. You'd like to get 2 double beds instead of the kingsized one and still have a roll in shower. This can be done depending on the resort.

I stayed at Port Orleans Riverside last week and they do have rooms with roll in showers and 2 double beds. I do know that the Wilderness Lodge only has king sized beds in thier "wheelchair accesable" rooms. So it really depends on the resort. If you talk to the people who handle medical reservation requests they might be able to recommend a resort that can accomidate your needs.

Another thing to consider is whether the accesable room is what you need or if you just would like one closer to the loby, food court etc. I've been a paraplegic for 26 years and the only time I've ever used a roll in shower is at WDW. Personally I hate them. I'd much rather have a room with a tub. The only reason I request a accesable room is because I travel with my daughter and I need to close off the bathroom door behind me. Since my daughter is 19 now I'm thinking of planning a solo trip and when I do I'll take a normal room with a tub. I was speaking to a CM last week about how the doors in the Disney Vacation Club model were all large and I liked it, he said it was now required by Florida law. So I bet anything new or refurbished will have large enough doors so that I won't need a roll in shower room.

If you feel comfortable giving abit more information, like number of people traveling and the limitations for your child we might be able to recommend a place that will work out well for you. Hopefully you'll have a great trip wherever you end up.

I've been thinking about this just a little bit tonight and I just realized why they can do the 2 beds in a moderate or lower but not in a deluxe. It's because of the entrance hall....I feel pretty stupid for not realizing this earlier.

In a moderate or less the bath area is at the far end of the room from the entrance and if they just enclose the entire bath/toilet/sink area the enclosed space is big enough for a wheelchair without reducing the sqaure footage of the bed area. However in the deluxes you enter the room from an inside hallway and the door is at the bathroom area so the only way to still close off the bath space and to allow room for a wheelchair inside is to take away some of the bed areas square footage. Or at least that's the only reason I can see for the policy.

Hi Midge

It's Cindy Megan and Michaela's mom. How's Michael doing?

Call Disney and ask for Special Guest Services tell them that you need a handicap room with a roll in shower and there are 4 of you going. Because they have rooms for 4 for everyone else they will give you 2 rooms at the All Star resorts that ajoin with a King and roll in shower and a 2 double beds with regular bathroom.

Go to the private message section I sent you my email address and phone number.

Here's the phone number for WDW Resort Special Reservations:
(407) 939-7807
(407) 939-7670 [TTY]
for anyone else who is looking for it. They should be able to help with information and arranging a room to fit what you need.

We stayed at the poly on our last visit, with me using an EVC. It worked out ok but..the doors didn't have a handicapped opener. I couldn't get back into the building by myself. The elevators are almost too small for an evc as well.
