Blame my Lost dvd's for this but I am curious. I'm sure Sawyer and Claire's are real but I'm not really sure about Sayid. Same with Buffy and Angel, Spike sounds British after all.

Spike (James Marsters) is American. He based his accent on that of "Giles" from the series (who is British). I think he did AMAZINGLY well.

Another "interesting" accent story is that of "Allen Doyle" from Angel. He really is Irish, so his accent on there was real. However, he got his first big break on Roseanne as Mark, the boyfriend (and later, husband) of her eldest daughter, Becky. He has absolutely NO trace of an accent in Roseanne....pretty impressive.

Another Buffy related accent, Alexis Denisof who played Wesley is American. He studied drama in London for three years.

Naveen Andrews who plays "Sayid" is British.

Emilie de Ravin aka "Claire" is an Aussie, and has used an American accent in Roswell as well as other projects.

Dominic Monaghan aka "Charlie" is indeed British

Josh Holloway aka "Sawyer" was raised in Georgia

I think the most interesting twist is Daniel Dae Kim aka "Jin" was raised in Pennsylvania and knew very little Korean when he started LOST. Yoon-jin Kim aka "Sun" speaks both languages fluently and LOST is her first big English speaking role.

I was wondering, as well. Thanks! :)

The accent that always throws me is Hugh Laurie, "House". :happytv:

I buy him as authentically American House so much, it always discombobulates me a little when I see him on talk shows with his VERY British real accent! :teeth:

(I don't think I've ever used "discombobulates" in a post. Maybe not in live conversation either. Just seemed to fit. :p )

He blows my mind, too, Kathy! Truly authentic!

Others who have fooled me with their American accents:

Simon Baker of The Guardian

Ian McShane of Deadwood

and the best NY accent of a Non NYer -- Colin Farrell in Phone Booth!!

Another notable was an Italian playing a Cuban -- Al Pacino in Scarface.

I studied speech and am always AMAZED at how an actor can play and maintain an accent during an entire movie.

Joely Richardson, who plays Julie McNamara on Nip/Tuck, is actually British. It always shocks me to hear her talk outside of the show.

The same with Jamie Bamber, who plays Apollo on the new Battlestar Galactica. He is SOOO convincing with his "American" accent, that every time I hear him speak on an interview with his natural British accent, I find I cannot focus on what he is saying (well, that and the fact that he is PRETTY cute!!!)....I find my mind just wandering off into lalaland...it's a nice trip!!! ;)

I was just going to post that! I had no idea he wasn't American until I saw a Sci Fi special on Battlestar. He does an EXCELLENT job on the accent.

Hugh Laurie, too.

Turns out the actress behind Dru(also Buffy) is American. Juliet Landau spent a few years in the UK when she was younger

The one that surprised me the most it Bob Hoskins. The first time I saw him was in Roger Rabbit. I was amazed that he's actually British!

James Marsters as Spike is amazing too. He really sounds like a typical geek(meant in a good way) when talking normally.

James Marsters did amazingly well with his accent when he played Spike. It's funny because in the flashbacks, Angel had an awful accent. I adore David Boreanaz but he'd better not try any more accents. ;)

Two others with good American accents are Anthony LaPaglia from Without a Trace (another Australian) and Mark Addy (the dad) from Still Standing (from York, England).
It always seems strange to hear them talking with their real accents.

Does anyone remember the show Xena? My son liked it when he was small.

Lucy Lawless, who played Xena, has a heavy Australian accent in real life. I never noticed it on the show.

Julian McMahon while on the topic of Nip/Tuck is an Aussie
