As i was putting my dd (5) on the school bus this a.m., I saw one parent talking to the bus moniter, and then pulling her son off the bus.
She came over to us, and told me that she has noticed a terrible smell (gas or something) in the school the other night when she was running girl scouts. Turns out - the fire dept. was at the school right now, and trying to find out where the smell was coming from..
Well, i headed right over to the school, sure enough, the buses were parked way off property in the fields, and all the teachers were outside, and the fire dept. was there, the school dept. was there, and ambulances.. Turns out there is a gas leak or something of that nature,
And it was going on since last week! Teachers told us they complained about the smell in their classes last week, and yesterday (one kid told us) there was no heat in his class, and he had to wear his coat all day!
So, i decided to go pull my dd off the bus, i was not about to send her into school not knowing what was going on..
Then, when i went to pull her off the bus, the bus driver told me quietly, that they weren't supposed to be telling the parents what was going on!!!!! :scared1: And she then told me that at least one teacher had to be taken in an ambulance last week b/c she got sick - due to the smell!!!
ARE YOU KIDDING ME??????!! And my child has been in the school for the past few days with this going on!!! And no one thinks it's ok to tell the parents about this??!!!
I am honestly sooooooooo upset over this right now.. It will be amazing if my dd ends up making it thru the public school system! NOW, i know why parents homeschool!!! This to me, is unacceptable :furious:

:sad2:

Holy Smokes! I would be FURIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OMG!!! I would have flipped :furious: !! I can't believe they would allow children in that building!!! :sad2: I don't blame you for being furious.

We had a very similar thing happen with us. They tried to tell us that it was a water leak, when here in fact it had been a gas leak that had been going on for several days. We got the media involved and demanded that the kids be moved to the high school for their classes until it was fixed, if they could not then the kids should NOT be credited with days lost/absent.

The thing that totally p'd me off was that they were trying to HIDE it. Oh gee, sorry the school blew up with your kids in it. Whatever!

Wow - I'd have to call the school board on that one. Sounds like kids could be in real danger....

This would make me mad

Thanks for the support!! I am getting more and more upset just thinking about all this!!!
My dd just told me that yesterday - her teacher was cold in class, and also 2 boys in her class ended up putting on their coats as well !! Unbelieveable!!!
Hellooooooo, this is December in New Enlgand - the kids need HEAT!!!!!!!!

Absolutely unacceptable. You are trusting the school to keep your children safe and they have the gall to lie about a seriously dangerous issue like that! You'd better believe I'd make sure it was all over the news.

There was a terrible smell at the HS here, smelled like gas, but it turned out to be a plumbing problem. Stinky, but not life-threatening. Hope yours turns out to be nothing as well.

That is unacceptable. I would get parents together and demand something to happen. They are more likely to take notice to a huge group then one person. Trust me been there done that, with trying to get our message across, except it was students and it was a sit in.

Don't ask, Don't Smell. :confused3

Sound dangerous. Keep your kid away until the Fire Department says it is clear. And complain to the School Board.

Yikes!!!!!!!!! I would be furious as well!!! I cannot believe that the schools did not send the children home after the first complaints and especially after a child got sick from the smell. The people in the school could die from inhaling carbon monoxide!! What is the school thinking!!

Ok, now thinking of it, this is the second issue i have had with this school this week..(meaning since last tues)
Last fri, i got a phone call from the school nurse on my cell, it was 2pm, (my dd is in K and is out of school at 11:10 am) and she proceeds to tell me:

Nurse: "Um, hi, is this Caitlins mom?"
Me: " Yes"
Nurse: "Well, I can't give Caitlin the Lactaid pill you sent in, i know it is only over the counter, but we need a dr. note to give it to her."
Me: "Uh, I think you have the wrong child"
Nurse: "This is Caitlins mom right?"
Me: "Yes, Caitlin V."
Nurse: "Uh, ok... that's who i was told this was for, you mean you didn't send in any med.s for Caitlin?"
Me: " um, NO absolutely not."
Nurse: "oh.. ok.. Thanks."

What the heck?!!!!! Geeez , i am so glad you called, before trying to give my dd med, that i didn't even send in! Not to mention, she called at 2pm, when my dd has already been home for 3 hrs! What the heck??!

Sheesh...
I bet the School Board's offices have heat (and no gas leak)...
I bet the Mayor's offices have heat (and no gas leak)...
I bet the County Administrator's offices have heat (and no gas leak)...

Well, you get the picture.
And I just *bet* that their offices are in better shape than most of the schools and the classrooms.
(Bet they''re newer too!)

agnes!

Actually, it was a teacher that got sent home sick! Just unacceptable... :furious:

As a teacher, I am always amazed at what schools panic over (usually political correctness issues) and what they don't (things like this). You have every right to pull your daughter out. Hope everything goes well for you and your school.

This is your first mistake, thinking or actually trusting the school to keep your kids safe... in actuality, they cannot really do that & if you trust them to do so, you will always be sorely disappointed :( At least that has definitely been our experience....

About the OP, I'd be mad as a hornet, but why didn't your daughter tell you about this when it started?

Wow... :sad2:

I just pulled my son back out of school this morning too.
Nothing as serious as what is being described here, but anything that affects a child best interest is serious.

I started to type 'unbelievable'...
But the sad thing is that this is very believable. :sad2:

This is crazy!

I would be starting some kind of phone chain using the school directory until every parent knew about it. If it isn't a big deal they should not be hiding it.
