absentee Dad

So if I want to get a passport for my daughter (whose father's name is NOT on the bc) I won't have to worry about getting his signature?

Exactly. Unfortunately, in my case, I'm not sure which copy of the BC I used for the original birth certificate...:(

I am assuming you meant "passport" not "birth certificate", yes?

You don't have to worry about that, they do not check against what you provided before. In fact, I do not think that they even send it in, the agent at the PO looks at it and then checks off on his form that it is in order.

I traveled with my son on a Disney cruise and they never questioned us at all. I did bring along my divorce decree that showed I was the custodial parent. They never even asked for it. I called not only Disney but also the airlines and was told my divorce decree would be sufficient. I also took my son to Aruba last year and no one said boo.

Now, a passport is another matter. I am planning a trip to Ireland next year and my ex refuses to sign a passport form. So, it is back to Family Court (if I go back there anymore, they will start charging me rent, lol).

Even with all this hassle, life is good when you are going on a Disney cruise!

Hi Verniebird!

my ex refuses to sign a passport form.

Perhaps you should advise your ex that this behavior is merely an annoyance to you, but it adds more unnecessary emotional distress for the child.

I guess there was a reason why I never place her "father" on her bc.

I tried that already. My ex does not have that kind of vision. I learned a long time ago that I am powerless when it comes to my ex. So I generally try to ignore him whenever possible, lol. But I do agree that it is stressful for my son.

We're going 6/12 on the Wonder. My wife was told that we would need a notarized permission card from the custodial parent of the kids. It wouldn't take too much detective work to figure this one out ... not only is my wife's name now the same as my daughter's (which always gets the attention of the Disney Reservations people), but my wife is 31 and my daughter is 18! You do the math.

Thank God my ex-wife and I get along, and she understands that this vacation will be great for the kids too. She's all for it.

I have absolutely no comprehension of someone who would be so low as to hurt a child by outwardly showing that they don't care about them. People don't realize how you can damage a child for life that way.

Hi Fins2TheRight!

my wife is 31 and my daughter is 18!

I know of an even better need for viagra - one of my clients recently celebrated their 75th birthday. His wife will be having her birthday in May. She turns 29...

Yes Fins I agree......it used to drive me crazy that my ex would use our son to get back at me. But I finally figured out that all I could do was live my own life and let him do his worse. I always say, "Living well is the best revenge." And I feel truly blessed to have the opportunity to work hard to pay for this trip for my son and myself. It makes my ex nuts that even with him refusing to pay child support, I can still take my son a terrific trip every year. And I get to pretend I am a kid again every time we visit Disney !

I think it's very hit or miss on who checks. I have a different last name than my 3 sons, on the Disney Cruise no one said anything, when we went into Canada my sons were all quizzed "Is this your mother?" (which was funny as they are all three the spitting image of me), "Does your father know where you are?" (fortunately they had just hung up from talking with him). I would think having children old enough to answer questions would make it easier, but just in case you may want to warn your children that they may be asked and especially if they are preteens it's not a time to be funny or cute. We made it through fine but it was stressful for the moment.

My favorite term for the ex is "wasbund" and they can be very difficult at times and when my wasbund behaves horribly I remind myself that these things are the very reason I'm no longer married to the man!!
