? about wireless internet in rooms

Actually I am glad that Disney does not offer FREE INTERNET. I had this problem a few years ago when my son brought his buddy with us to WDW. This boy was obsessed with Internet game. If the service was free, I would think that he would rather stay in the room and played all day and night. After he was told that it would cost him $9.95 a day just to be connected, he didn't even mention the word "computer" for the whole week.
If you really need to stay in touch via emails, perhaps you should consider getting the data plan with your cell carriers. We have "simply everything" with Sp****. Great plan.

WOW they really have you people. i am so glad i didnt drink the kool aid they gave you......when you say your a guest and follow the rules sounds like you are staying at someones house .we are guests but we pay big money to be there guests and we keep them in biz . all i am saying is it would be nice if they had it ...but right away i am a jerk because i dissagree with disney and everyone here, sorry for not drinking the kool aid and having an opinion. is everyone here paid by disney to defend disney everytime someone says something negitive about them.WOW get a mind of your own people its o.k. to say that its not the perfect place.

It's really annoying....I just picked up an HP netbook (was eyeing one anyway for a convenient little web surfing machine to have by the TV) to bring on the trip. Although I have a laptop (DH does too but it's work-owned), my ethernet network card has long since died and all that works is wireless (plus it's old and heavy but the latop works great). Therefore, my laptop won't work in the room at BC.

So....the netbook does have an ethernet outlet so it can be physically connected (which is stupid that it's required). Although I can understand WDW's concerns about an open network, it can be secured and the public access could still be administered by a third party (which I believe the traditional internet connections in the guest rooms are as it is).

Here's the thing - both DH and I have phones capable of email, so it's not like we couldn't use those if we didn't want to pay for the internet connection at the resort. However, there's only so much you can write using your phone (yes, even blackberries and keyboard cell phones...it's still a pain to answer something in detail). We may want to check out some off-property activities and it's not like the Disney staff (even CL) is going to be all that helpful if you want to leave the premises! Finally, even though this *is* a vacation, we both have jobs that require a little bit of communication, not to mention the emails to family and petsitter letting them know we made the trip down all right, etc.

Others are correct in stating that Disney does not have to offer 'free internet', and I can't even argue with that. However, the fee does seem a bit steep, and the fact that you have to be physically wired is just ridiculous! Particularly nowadays when so many people rely on using the internet for so many tasks.....they'd probably make more money with 5 bucks a day wireless access than they do now on the service because more people would be willing to pay for it.

I'd agree that the internet access should be wireless; especially in today's world with almost any device capable of accessing the internet can do it wirelessly.
However, most companies rarely give away anything for free. They may say it's free, but the cost is simply absorbed by a price increase in some other area.
For myself, even though I've been in IT (or perhaps because I work with it every day), for 20 years, I like the vacation from the internet and computers. Its' the only time I'm not logged on somewhere.

Considering internet is free at the Disneyland Hotel and the other 2 Disney owned hotels in Anaheim, I don't see why they can't provide free internet at WDW resorts.

But Disneyland Hotel charges a daily "resort fee" which pays for the internet, parking and daily newspaper so it really isn't free. WDW could do the same thing and offer "free" internet and then tack on an automatic resort fee. WDW choices to do it the way they do.

For those who need the internet service for business while vacationing in Disney. LISTEN, you all should be able to get your $10/day reimbursed from your work. It is just another deductible right?

That's kind of the point. Disney resort hotels are not the Red Roof Inn - they are resort hotels at a theme park. Free internet is generally included in hotels that want to attract budget business travelers. I've never stayed at a high end hotel that offered free internet.

I'm a frequent business traveler and have found the same thing. Hilton, Marriott both charge for internet. The lower end hotels use free internet as a selling point. Disney doesn't have to give it away free to attract guests.

I agree with both of you although there are some exceptions out there. The downtown Marriott in Pittsburgh does offer free internet at least on the club floor.

Thanks so much for answering my question! That's good info. to have. If I go and need to use the internet it probably won't be for more than a day and to download pics of my trip and check e-mail etc. so that would work perfect.

You're welcome.:goodvibes

Have a great trip!:cool1:

I do not agree with that. This is 2009. Free internet should be provided.
Well, respectfully - why? Do you expect your own internet service provider to give it to you free? If you own a home, do you expect free internet access to be free as part of your mortgage? If you rent an apartment, do you expect free internet access to be included in your rent? Then why do you expect a vacation resort whose hotels are not in competition with the Red Roof Inn or the Comfort Inn to provide free internet service?

But, dial-up (when did everyone become so danged spoiled, anyway) can be had for simply the price of a local telephone call.

i dont get you people why do you always defend disney?
I don't get you people why do you always criticize other posters for explaining why Disney does something the way it does - NOT to be confused with 'defending Disney'. They have their own legal team for that.

Your assessment of yourself aside - because NOBODY here even implied that - not at all. Feel free to disagree with Disney. What's tending toward giving others here the same impression of you that you assign to yourself is your judgment/opinion of the other posters on this thread.

The competitive environment among hotels is a lot different in Anaheim.
::yes:: DLR has just the three on-site hotels... and dozens of non-Disney-owned properties withinn walking distance of both parks.

Yes, they do charge a resort fee, however even with the resort fee, the price of the hotel rooms cost a lot less for comparable rooms, in California than they do in Florida. As far as tacking on prices, many people believe that the price of the "free Disney's Magical Express" cost is tacked on to the price of the resort room whether they use it or not.

You would have to have an account for dial-up service with some Internet provider and one with a toll free number (or Orlando local number - therefore no charge). Then you just plug the cable into the phone and your computer and call that toll free number - therefore no charge.

Hmmm, sounds pretty impossible for a non US resident. Oh well.

$10 a day wont be so bad, only need to check in once or twice. :)

Oh, right. There was an original question here, wasn't there? ;)

Not uninterrupted, but you can get high-speed internet access on four conseutive calendar days for a total of $19.90:

Sign on again at/after noon on Tuesday (day 3)
Sign off before noon on Wednesday (day 4)
Total cost for less than 24 hours = $9.95
Total spent $19.90

Days/times provided for example only; any four consecutive days/two twenty-four hour periods can be substituted

Disney is a business and it's purpose is to make money for its stockholders. If they can make the money off internet and not lose business, they will do it. What I don't understand is people who think Disney is some kind of charity and should give away services just to be "nice".

My DH may need to use the internet for business purposes during our upcoming stay (which I'm pretty sure he would be able to get reimbursed). If we brought our wireless router from home, would that work to turn the wired internet into wireless internet? (DH would be able to make it secure, as he works in IT and knows all of this stuff, so I'm not worried about the security factor.)

If any of you have a smart phone, it can be used as a modem. I can add the service to my cell phone and then cancel it when I get back. It would cost me $15.

Still haven't decided whether or not to do it. Might be nice to spend a week unplugged.

I know that some of my fellow travelers from another board use some kind of internet hook up and have free Internet for a month.

You may call the Sco...... people looking for cheap but my fellow Dutchies win that price by far :lmao::lmao:.
If there is something out there for free we will find it :rotfl2:

I have to confess I don't use this possibility I'm just to lazy we simply use the hotel connection. If you like I could snoop around what site you could use.

Just a little advice. Take your a long cable from home with you.

The cable Disney provides is very short and you have to use your lappy while sitting in the bed. Not very comfy.
