OK. I'm not even an owner, but I lurk just in case I can some day buy points and join the club.

Here's my question. If an owner reserves dates at one resort, but then later their waitlist resort comes through that acually uses LESS points than the original reservation, what happens to the extra points? Do they go back into the account and are then bankable toward the next year?

Thanks!

What happens to the points depends on a few things.

The best case would be if the waitlist comes through 31 or more days out from the start of the reservation. Then the points are back in the UY in which they were used. If they weren't banked or borrowed before, then you can bank them into the next UY - IF you are within the banking period. For instance, I have a waitlist for a Standard View 2 bedroom at BLT for January. I only "care" if this waitlist comes through before the end of October, because I have a March UY and the 31st is my last banking date. If the waitlist doesn't come through before then, I have a note to myself to cancel the waitlist. I don't have any plans to make additional reservations in my current UY and so, I may as well stick with the more costly reservation.

If the waitlist comes through within the 31 days before the reservation, those "extra" points are points in holding and can not be banked, but must be used in the current UY for a reservation that can only be made 60 days or fewer out. I usually cancel waitlists that would give me "extra" points by this because I usually plan far in advance, and only rarely have I ever tried to make a reservation at such short notice.

There may be other considerations, but those are the cases that first come to my mind.
