?? about upgrading tickets at the parks?

We are going to Disney in January - woohoo!. I hope that I can make this question make sense!
Currently, we have booked a package including 6 day park hoppers for our 7 night trip.
There is some speculation that a package discount will be announced soon, and that it may include free ticket add-ons (water parks...) We were not going to buy those add-ons because of the time of year we are going and the ages of our kids, but we hope to go to Disney again, and then we could use them, so we're thinking that we should upgrade our tickets to 10-day tickets and add the non-expiring option (which is probably what Disney is hoping everyone will do!). This would give us 4 days plus 5 plus options to use for a future trip.
So, my question is, my DH says to wait and upgrade our tickets on the trip, but I think that we will pay more then because a) we are getting an advance purchase discount on the tickets now but if we upgraded them there the difference we would pay would be between current gate prices and the advance price that we paid, and b) we would pay 2005 prices now but our trip is early 2006 and ticket prices will probably go up.
Does this make sense? Does anyone know how they charge you for extra days when you add them on at the parks?

Currently you pay the same price for adding on days regardless of where you bought the original ticket or how much you paid. You would pay the difference between the gate price of what you want and the gate price of what you have.

Thank you, very interesting and excellent information. I'm pleasantly surprised to find out that it won't make a difference if we upgrade now or later.
