About to call off my whole trip over the dining UNFAIRNESS

okay I had to book all tables of 4 and say there would only be 3 eating because we are traveling with an infant. Though I had an awesome Cast member that wrote on all of our ADRs request for high chair. This honestly was the easiest of all my trips to Disney and making ADRs.

Though after reading this thread I may see if I can get DD and I a meal at CRT

I had a party-size issue last fall. My brother and whatever she is now, didn't know whether or not they'd be with us for some meals. I was told by the CM, that it wouldn't be a problem if we had up to 2 less guests than we had booked for.

People get sick, plans change, etc. There are many reasons why 1 or 2 people may not make an ADR.

Last year my parents were hoping to come to Disney with us, but because my dad has cancer, they weren't sure if he'd be up to the trip. When I booked my ADRs I told the CM that I had a dilemma because I knew if my parents did come, then we'd need tables for 6, however, we wouldn't know until the last minute if they would be cancelling their trip, so it was entirely possible that all of our meals would really end up as ADRs for 4 people. The Disney CM told me to book the meals for 6 people, and if for some reason my parents had to cancel, then we could just explain the situation at the podium. I agree with all the other posters who've said you got an "off" CM. Call back and try again. I was very pleased with the way they helped me through my questions last year. Thankfully my parents did make it so we ended up needing those tables for 6 afterall.

I haven't read all the posts, but my wife and I took our 3.5yo daughter to WDW last month and I booked reservations for 3 at the following:

1900 Park Fare
Akershus
Crystal Palace
Tutto Italia

These reservations were made at different times with different CMs and there was never any controversy about the party size. As you would expect, we sat at a table for 4 at each restaurant. I guess what I'm saying is that the CM didn't handle the OP's call properly.

She told me I could be denied seating. I asked what happened if a group of 4 had a reservation and one person had gotten sick or something, would they be refused - she said, if they were seated at a table for 3 OR 4 they wouldn't, but if they had a table for 4 yes it was possible.
She was pretty snotty.

You wont be denied seating... I've had reservation for 4 and then showed up with only 2 because one daughter got sick, so that eliminated 1 child and 1 adult... I was still seated.

The stupidity of this entire run around you are getting is the simple fact that reservations at Disney are the most insane thing I have ever gone through... you make reservations for 8:00 and then are supposed to show up 15 minutes early... does that mean they will actually seat you at 8:00? No.. its done as the seats are available so it might still be 8:15 or 8:30 before you actually get in.

I am guessing that by the current question that you are making one simple mistake.. your asking to many questions and giving them too much information.

Just call them up and book a table for 4.... don't go on and on about how you really only need 3 or ask them what happens if only 3 show up... just book one for 4... get the confirmation number and hang up. Don't make it harder than it is.

My apologies if the CM was rude. That is ridiculous and there is NO excuse.

It is unfair however, to call her poorly trained because she could not book three at a table for four. The dining system WILL NOT ALLOW THIS. It was physically impossible for her to do this. No CM can do this.

But, she also could have booked for four like the OP offered, that was completely her prerogative. I am so sorry to the OP for encountering rudeness.

If I have a guest who wants to pay for a fourth person, it makes no difference to me. I still always warn the guest that the restaurant had the right to deny service if they are short of people, but I highly doubt it will happen. That's sort of a CYA statement, so that I don't get in trouble for doing something I'm not supposed to do.

Again, apologies for the rudeness. I can not explain why certain tables are held for certain parties, but I hope that I have shown that it's out of the reservation CMs hands. But some do choose to go around that by booking the wrong party size.

I agree w/ the op. Call back and book it for 4 and when you show up just say the other person was sick. This actually happened to us when we booked Mickey's BBQ. Hey things happen and people can get sick. Good luck to you!

Well, lots of posts on this subject, and I haven't read them all, so what I'm about to say may have already been said:

Those of us with *Magic* in our eyes often forget one simple fact - Disney is running a business here. The dining reservation system is designed to optimize the number of available seats in any given restaurant. While the cast member may have been unnecessarily rude in delivering the message, chances are it is a message he or she was trained to give, simply that they won't give a table intended for 4 paying customers to a party of 3 people. That's a guaranteed loss of 25% revenue on that table. That may not seem like a big deal, but say they do that over and over again on any particular night - you start to see where that does become a big deal to the guys wearing the suits and counting the magic beans.

Now the other side of the coin is, if you show up to a ressie for a table for 4 with only 3 people, give them your sad story of poor old aunt Edna having expired that day on Mission Space (or what ever your story may be), you will much more than likely get your table. The only caveat to that might be the standby line - if another group of 4 happens to be standing by hoping for a cancellation, well then it would be up to the discretion of that restaurant whether to give your table to another party. I don't think that would happen, but it could.

Bottom line, it's a matter of simple economics, which, as I said earlier, we civilians tend to forget.

adding to the CRO CM stupidity -

We've gone 3 years, come Oct 4 years - we are a family of 3 - - we have NEVER been told or sat at a table for 3.... never been denied a seating!! (as in when I call and say we are a family of 3 the CM on the phone has always found a ressie for us!! Maybe not the time I've wanted... and I dont always call at 180 - I didnt always know about that!)

We''ve eaten
CRT
1900 Park Fare
Princess storybook
LTT
Tony's
Crystal Palace
LeCellier
Ohana's
Kona
Cali Grille
Rose and Crown
Yachtsman
Hollywood and Vine

For this Oct I made ressies for Princess Storybook, 1900 Park Fair, Grand High Tea at Grand Floridian, Coral Reef, Lilo Stitch Breakfast, (there's probably more, but its embarrassing isnt it?)

So OP I'm glad you didnt give up - glad you posted those gorgeous pictures, and I'm glad you didnt give due to one strange CM!!

One year during Free Dining I made ressies for 5 - I was to meet an internet friend and her dd for a 7pm LTT ressie, her dh and their baby (3 months old I think) were going to stay back at the resort - but they showed up - eeek - well I checked in and told them, and if they couldnt seat us our friends wouldnt seat and we'd be a party of 3 - they sat us!! I was SHOCKED! and it took maybe 10 minutes!!

I just had 10 table service meals during a trip that ended last wednesday, and while I agree with your above statement, I did not see any tables made for 3 people. If this policy is true, its almost like saying "no ADRs for your party of 3 unless we have a table for 3 people" I guess I'm just saying I don't get it

Thanks everyone - I think we will be fine now.
If the CM stated her name at the beginning of the call it blew out in a fit of steam from ear to the other when she told me that I couldn't have the table.
And I agree - smart customer service would have said "sorry there's no availability" rather than yeah we do have a table for 4 but nah nah nah boo boo.

But we're cool now, and very excited about our trip. Booked my cruise last night and now I'm trying to figure out all the must dos!

Oh and the dress - no I didn't make it. A good friend had it done custom and loaned it to us - now we have to get it back from her to use again. :thumbsup2

I am so happy to hear that things have worked out for your next Magical Vacation!:thumbsup2

In a previous post you mentioned how much your daughter loved the stepsisters, as well as Cinderella and her Prince. Just in case you didn't now, and would like for her to have a bit more interaction with them, the stepsisters and Lady Tremaine can be found in the little theater on the side of Cinderella's castle. It is where Belle has her storytime. One the hours that Belle is not there, Cindy's step family is. We had a lot of fun there one afternoon.

Have a great time! Jennie

Are there actually any tables for 3 at CRT these days. Back when it wasn't a character meal we had lunch at CRT every trip and I can't recall any tables for three. There were just a few two tops.

I wonder if it's just a few CMs who misunderstood training?

I haven't read the entire thread so this could have already been mentioned..but...when I went to WDW last month we had a party of 3 and then a friend decided to go, so I had to call and change it to a party of 4, i thought no biggie, we are prob already seated at tables for 4....but when I called the woman i spoke to said she was only worried about Brown Derby and Boma as these were the only places we were eating at that actually have seating for only 3. we were able to change it to 4 and when we were at Brown Derby we tried to look for one of these 3 toppers but couldn't find one lol

Also, I edited with this, did you get the name of the person you talked to on the phone at Disney Dining because I would definitely be includiing that in my letter to Disney. You called, the table was available... 3 people sit at a 4 table... I do not get it, but I am annoyed myself over this.

I've had my own dealings with a flaky CM at CRO, but lucky for me, I was meticulous. For a 2002 trip, I used a code for AP rates, one published in the Mickey Monitor. When I call, I take note of the CM's stage name before I make a reservation, and I did so that time. I also stated the 3-letter code both as letters and as words. CSR would be "Charlie, Sam, Robert" just to be sure. It was supposedly a concierge garden view for the Polynesian, but it seemed lower than it should be. I asked multiple times, are you sure this is the annual passholder rate? Which she confirmed, yes.

When I received the confirmation in the mail, the rate showed up as CFR. Now, if I had only used the "CSR" wording, I could see how she could book CFR, as the letters in the middle could sound alike. It turns out that it was a good thing I called. She quoted me an airline employee discount, and they would ask me for airline ID when I checked in! I ended up explaining my story to two CMs, one being a supervisor, and both agreed that because I had not tried to hoodwink them into using a code I wasn't entitled to, and that I had made every intention to use the code I was entitled to, they would honor the discount for me. Nice guest recovery! Of course, the Polynesian concierge who checked me in wanted to see ID until I told him to look for a note on the reservation from a CRO supervisor. ;)

So that's why I feel it's a good idea to politely ask the name of the CM if you couldn't hear it the first time. You never know when you'll need it! If I had gotten the refusal in the same manner, I would have asked to talk to a supervisor and let the supervisor find out why the cast member felt she couldn't book that table, so no other party in the future would get a bad experience from her.

My apologies if the CM was rude. That is ridiculous and there is NO excuse.

It is unfair however, to call her poorly trained because she could not book three at a table for four. The dining system WILL NOT ALLOW THIS. It was physically impossible for her to do this. No CM can do this.

I'm assuming that you either work for CRO, or have access to the booking systems in the resorts, so you're speaking as a current CM.

I think most of us are incredulous that the cast member wouldn't have even thought to book the party of 3 at a 4 top, since that reservation could have been done. While I think it's common sense and a judgement call, not everyone has common sense. I certainly don't think that cast member had any.

And as it seems you cannot tell us WHY it can't be done due to confidentiality agreements, I cannot fathom why the system wouldn't allow for adjustments or the judgement call.

She was pretty snotty.

For what its worth, we were denied seating at Ohana for the breakfast because a member of our party decided she "didn't want to go"...so none of got too...gotta love "D"SD! [at least that's what I keep telling myself:rolleyes2

Hi!!

I have been to WDW several times...each with at least 5 in our group...we have three kids.

Never had an issue.

What I really came here to say was YOUR VIDEO MADE ME CRY HAPPYTEARS!!!

OH MY!!! How magical!! Lovely!!!!! I love it. It reminds me of our first character meal...actually our first ever family meal at CM's. The picture I have of my then 6 yo looking at Chip with her big blue eyes and her arms open wide....

just magic.

You can't go wrong with moments like that in your mind and heart forever!!

Have fun on your WDW vacation!!

To the OP~I just wanted to tell you that your little girl is absolutely adorable, and I loved the video of her with Cinderella. It is no wonder she is in love with that restaurant. We have dinner booked here in October, and I can only hope that my little girl has that good of a time!

On the ADR, I would have done exactly what you did and booked a table for 4.....that policy is simply ridiculous.

well, I don't think I'd call off my whole trip over a single meal! If you want to do it that bad, why not book & pay for 4? Yes, that will make it more expensive, but if it's that important to you? You're already spending quite a bit for the meal, since you have to buy park tickets to get there...

No, I wouldn't call of the trip............and I definately would NOT pay for 4. I would book the seating for 4 and then when you show up there will only be three. They are not going to turn you away.

i can't beleive they even had a table available! hang up immediately callback and ask for 4. we have had to do that before and it worked out just fine when we got there with a smaller party. it never even dawned on me to do this until last year when a CM at our hotel concierge desk told me Ohana & Boma are booked solid for 2 but party or 4 might be able to get in, think u could find someone to go with you? WINK WINK . its not something i recommend but if they want to be so stingy w/ thier tables then you have no choice.

:scared1: They actually wouldn't seat you?

WEll I don't think they will be refused. I had a hard time booking a party of one as I went solo. I couldn't get an early ADR only 9PM & I didn't want one that late. The CM said as you sure it is not 2? She said she had one & booked it for me. She said when I went to check in just tell them the other person didn't show. That what I did & had no problems. Call back & ask for a table of 4 you are not breaking any rules they would sit a table of 3 in a table of 4, same for table of 1 in a table of two
