Does the sliding glass door in the rooms have a lock at the top? My son is 3 and still wakes up in the middle of the night. I am worried that if the locks are where he can reach them, he will unlock it and walk onto the balcony. He has autism is prone to unlocking doors and walking out without telling anyone. (cause he can't) We have placed extra locks on our doors where he can't reach them.

Thanks,

AFAIK, the only lock is the one you'd expect - in the latch mechanism about half way up.

I'm going to move this thread to the disABILITIES! Forum. I'm sure there are several posters there who can help you with ideas for making the sliders secure.

You might also try posting this question on the Disney for Families Forum for the same reason.

You could purchase a sliding door lock - it's a pole that prevents the door from being slid on the track. When I have time, I'll look for a website that shows them, or you could google 'sliding door lock'.

I would get a room without a balcony.

Another option might be to barricade the balcony with any furniture you can and hopefully you will hear movement there if anything is disturbed.

Finally, I know there are bed alarms that will alert you if your child moves out of bed. I would get one.

Great ideas, I was unsure if there was a room without a balcony because we will be staying at the Bay Lake Tower.

I would assume that all of the Bay Lake Tower rooms would have a balcony because a balcony is shown on the plans. If the plans on their website are correct, it looks like there will be a regular glass door in the living room of the 1 bedroom unit that opens out. The plan shows another door in the Master bedroom, which looks like a sliding door because a set of French doors would take too much space.
If that is correct, you could put something in front of the living room door from the outside that would prevent it from being opened. And, then put one of the sliding glass door items that other people mentioned to keep the Master bedroom door from being opened.

If you are in a studio, it looks like there will probably be just one door, a sliding glass door.

I would imagine BLT would have sliding glass doors similar to this picture of a 1 bedroom at SSR shows:

I could not find a picture of a single door, but OKW has a single door that opens out in the Master bedroom like the French door in this picture of a Boardwalk villa studio shows:

Here's a link to the DVC BLT website where you can look at a small map and a 360 tour.

Thank you Sue this has really helped. As of today we have a split stay at OKW and BLT so this info has been really helpful. :goodvibes

In that case, you should know that the studio bedroom and Master bedroom at OKW have a single glass door that opens out. The living room of the 2 bedroom OKW villa has a set of French doors. If you have dedicated 2 bedroom unit at OKW(one that can't be split into a studio and a separate 1 bedroom) the second bedroom won't have a door or a porch to the back

I just wanted to point out something.

I just stayed at a Tower MK view room at the Contemporary Resort. We were on the 10th floor. Our door leading out to our balcony had TWO locks. One was on the handle. The other was about 6 feet off the ground.

Considering that BLT is a HIGH RISE tower, I would *assume* that they will ALSO have a higher lock for safety reasons in order to keep the kids from opening the door.

I have a very clever autistic 4 year old as well. He was not with me at the Contemporary, but I remember being aware of that lock when I was in the room and thinking to myself "now there is a lock that he would NOT be able to reach".

My sister even commented "why is this lock so high", and I told her, "to keep kids like Max (my son) from being able to open the door and fall off that balcony!"

So, again, without knowing, but assuming, I think they have already thought about the safety issues that come along with having balconies in high rises (at least, they thought about it at Contemporary). And, I'm sure that they have addressed it in a way that is satisfactory.
