When you check in do they just automatically give you a parking pass or do you have to ask for one? DMom is staying w/us but not for the whole week, as she is leaving mid-week to go visit friends. She will be renting a car but not using it until she leaves the World, so she will still need a parking pass to park it at the resort right? The pass is only good at our resort - correct? Or can she also use it at the parks? We've never used a car during our trips so this part is new to me. Thanks.

Usually when you arrive to the Resort you're staying at, the Cast Member working in the security both will give you the parking pass after you tell them you're checking in. The pass is good at you're Resort for you're whole stay and it can be used when driving to the theme parks because WDW Resort guests do not pay for parking there.

Most of the resorts will give you a parking pass when you check in. Some resorts, like the Contemporary, will have them at the guard shack since they don't want people parking there to access Magic Kingdom or another park. The parking pass at check in seems to be automatic but the Cast Member may ask if you need one. Put that on the dashboard for your stay. Or, in the case of your mother, until she leaves. You don't have to turn the pass in so she can just leave the resort whenever she wants. The pass is good at the resort and at any of the parks for free parking.

When you check in at any WDW resort, the CM will ask you if you have a car. If you do, he will give you a parking pass with the dates of your stay printed on it. Put this pass into the winshield of your car (or in this case, Mom's car), and it will allow her to park at your resort, and park for free at the theme parks, for the duration of your stay.

Self-parking at all WDW resorts is free, but if you are not staying at a particular resort you are limited to 3 hours; this is enforced mostly at the Deluxe resorts, to prevent off-site Guests from taking up all the parking spaces to avoid the $11 per day parking fee at the theme parks. If you are not staying at Polynesian, for example, but you drive there for a meal at 'Ohana or Kona Cafe, then the guard at the security checkpoint will give you a 3-hour permit when you arrive.
