When they serve the meat off the skewers, do they set the tips down on your plate? In other words, might they have set it down on someone's dirty plate, and then onto yours?

I hate to even ask, but I really do need to know...

Betty

From what I remember a couple of months ago, they prevent the skewer from touching the plate.

I really don't understand this question. Why would your food be on someone elses plate?

The food is brought right to your table. There would be no reason for your skewers to be anywhere near anyone's dirty plates!

I've never been to Ohanas, so I'm not completely sure how this works, but it is my understanding that they bring the meats around on skewers, but that several different tables get served off that skewer (in other words, the entire skewer isn't for you, or not even just for your table). Since it is all-you-can eat, they would also be serving onto people's already-eaten-off plates. I'm just trying to find out if they are careful about not letting the tips of the skewers touch those plates.

Ahhh, I understand, good question (even though I did roll my eyes, sorry) That kind of stuff doesn't bother me, unless someone like sneezed on or licked the skewer, :crazy2: gross! I understand your concern though. I don't know but I am sure they are aware people have the same concern as you and are careful.
By the way, do you eat at buffets, my bet is you don't?

The tips of the skewers never touch the plates. The server will push down the meat just until it's halfway off the skewer, then put it on your plate before pushing it all the way off the skewer.

If the skewer had touched another diners plate before yours, the skewer would be wiped clean as they push the food onto your plate :)

Ewwww....you mean that other people get served from the same skewer? Even if that doesn't touch their plate...that still sounds kinda "ewwww."

I've never done Ohana's either so maybe it's not disgusting at all but now I'm worried 'cause we have Ohana's planned this vacation. *sigh*

LOL...goofyish...BUT it would be wiped clean by the food you were about to eat! LOL!

I have never even thought about it. I know people are awfully squeamish about stuff like that, so i am sure WDW is careful to not gross anyone out. I ate dinner at O'Hana once and I cannot recall.

Actually no. It would be wiped clean by the food THEY are about to eat. Unless they touched their plate after the food was off the skewer, which is not likely. (not that it would really "clean" the skewer anyway)

"Don't worry I cleaned it with my steak" ;)

No more "ewwww" than cooking hamburgers for different people on the same grill, or using the same spoon to serve your mashed potatoes and the potatoes for the people after you. As long as it doesn't touch someone else's dirty plate, of course. Which I'm pretty sure it doesn't. My niece is a bit OCD about germs, and she would have said something if it did (she refuses to drink if a server touches the pitcher to her glass while refilling it, so I know she would have noticed if a skewer that went around the entire table had touched her plate.)

OP, are you my mother?

(That's exactly the kind of thing that my mom would worry about.)

I seem to remember that the food was "de-skewered" onto a separate plate that they then served from one of the times I as there and the other time the meat was pushed down beyond the tips of the skewers before it was set onto the plate. In either senario the tips of the skewers did not touch my plate.

They cook the meat straight on the skewers which are huge. These skewers hold 10-12 pieces of meat on them. When the server brings it out to you, you tell him/her how many pieces you want. Then he/she just pushes the bottom piece out to your plate.

heehee, Mycroft...I see what ya mean!

I never think about things like this. I am the opposite of a germphobe.

I gotta say, I was bothered at "Fresh" at the Dolphin. We had breakfast there and got coffee, but there was no cream on the table. The server reached over to a dirty table near us (the party had just left) and gave us their half used cream in the little pitcher it is served in. Now, I don't know if someone sneezed on that, or if the kids that were at the table poured something in it, or drank out of the pitcher, or whatever. Of course, I didn't say anything and I used the cream...but it DID make me wonder a bit!

Almost hate to post this: Did O'hana just this past March. For those who have never been the skewers are HUGE. The server comes over and asks if you would like some of whatever is on the skewer and then he pushes the meat down the skewer and off on to your plate. The problem is that the skewers are heavy when full of meat and most servers were carrying 2 skewers. Well, the skewers actually did touch my plate although I could tell the server was doing his best to prevent it. I actually said, "Uh-oh" silently to myself and then the server went directly to the next table and served those folks from the same skewers.

I just tried to put this out of my mind as quickly as I could. :sad2:

We eat at Ohana almost every trip and this is how I've always seen it done--the guy with the skewer has a little plate (bread-plate sized) that he carries with him. He puts that plate on your table. He rests the tip of the skewer on that plate and pushes the meat to the end of the skewer. Then he dangles the skewer over your plate (no touching here) and slides the meat so that it falls onto your plate.

Thank you all for your replies, and for not making fun of me!

This is what planted the whole thought in my head: It's a picture that someone posted on another thread:

http://www.wdwfood.com/gallery/ohana/serverfood

In it, I could clearly see that the server was resting those skewers on a plate, but it looks like exactly what DisneyCowGirl said - that it's a smaller plate that he carried around with him.

I am relieved! Does anyone else remember a little plate being carried around by the server?
