Trying to decide whether to check a bag or not. Here's the issue. Our flight out of Orlando will be totally booked. We usually get our boarding passes 24 hrs in advance to avoid the possibility of not having seats together or worse yet, getting bumped. If we use ME with a checked bag, we can't get our boarding passes until we check our checked bag with the attendant at our hotel the morning we leave, right? Don't know if I should take the chance doing this or just try to squeeze everything into carryons. Has anyone flown a Delta lately? How picky are the being with carry on size?

You can get your boarding passes separately from checking your bag at your resort.

When I went to check my bags in September, they asked me if I already had my boarding passes. I said no, so he printed it up right there, but I could have already had them no problem

Checking in to get your boarding pass and checking luggage are 2 different things. You can print off your boarding passes the night/day before and then check your luggage the morning of.

Delta pre-assigns seats, can't you get assignments or are they all taken?

You can check-in at guest services at 24 hours to get your boarding passes, you don't have to wait until baggage check.

We flew Delta this time last year. We had pre-assigned seats. When leaving Delta sent me a text message at the 24 hour before mark to check in online. Which I did with no problem. The next morning we went down with our luggage to Luggage Svcs and they checked everything and printed out our boarding passes for us. Very easy and convenient!!

We chose seats already, but with the flight being sold out, I don't want to be bumped if they are overbooked. Besides, it wouldn't be the first time they change plane size and don't get your whole party seated together (even though the could when the switched).

Your seats can be changed right up to the moment you get on. I've flown Delta frequently and remember at least 3 times that a slip popped out when they scanned my boarding pass at the gate with a new seat #. And not a better seat.

I get my boarding pass when I check my luggage, I never had an issue with getting bumped. If you have seats assigned, odds are low. The first ones to get bumped are usually those without seat assignments. Even then, there are usually volunteers to get bumped.

Whether you have checked bags or not is not going to affect their overbooking and bumping passengers. I think you've done everything you can do by getting seats assigned and then checking in for your flight as soon as you can. The other thing to do is to get to the gate as early as possible.

You're going to have a connection if you're flying all the way to Marquette. A family with connecting flights are not the passengers Delta will want to rebook. They'd rather rebook individuals flying to DTW as their final destination since there are many more options for rebooking.

Anyway, to your original questions, the checked bags don't matter re bumping or getting your boarding pass. I wish Delta was more vigilant about carry on bag size. Delta oftentimes takes the carry-on bags of passengers and checks them -- particularly if you're among the last to board and people have stuffed the bins with bags that are too big, coats, etc. and there is no more room.

I always check in the day before online with my smartphone or whatever. I rarely print my boarding passes - I do that when I check in my bags the morning of departure or when I get to the airport. Super easy to do.

Don't think you have anything to worry about :)

I've done the carry on thing - and nowadays, prefer bigger check in luggage and fewer carryons - so freeing to walk through the airport with barely anything in hand.
