I've been considering digital scrapbooking in the future (I've got to use up a lot of supplies first), but here's my question.

Do you just do without the scraps? I mean, what about all the 'things' I have saved, the ribbons kids got at school, patches for various sports, newspaper clippings, WDW passes, maps, cards. Obviously all of these things could be scanned in and still placed on a digital page, but it just doesn't seem the same to me. Then it could be just a picture of a ribbon from anywhere, not 'the' ribbon my son won for his science fair project.

And if I did scan those things in and use them that way, what would I do with the real thing then, if I don't have a scrapbook to put it into?

Or maybe digital scrapbooking is meant for those who don't keep all the 'things', is it meant to be a cleaner version of scrapping?

Just curious how everyone handles 'scraps' when they work digitally.:confused3

You can do any or all of what you said, whatever is your personal preference. I've scanned in some things and used them on layouts. Or you could save them in a box or pockets or something like that. Or you can leave a space on your layout for the item (or scan it in first and assemble it on the page), but then adhere the item to your digital page.

Why can't you print out the digi page, then add those memories too it - like a hybrid page??? Thats what i plan to do if i want to include a memo.
Or, i would do a separate "pocket" page or put those items in a page protector near the lo. Or, like you said, scan them.

That's a good idea, I was just curious how others were doing it.

I think that's the best of both.. ya know?? That way you get the "real" momento you want, and the digi page you want..
You will LOVE digi!! Step over to the "dark side!!" LOL

Once I actually get BACK into digital more, my plan is to actually do alot of "hybrid" pages so I can use up some scrapping supplies......all those embellishments. lol

But its also perfect for the memorabilia. Leave a space before printing & attach later.

I have a tip from a layout I did years ago. If you have an oddly shaped item that you want the same oddly shaped "space" for later, scan the item at LOW resolution & place the scan on the page at actual size. Design around it. But before printing, delete the scanned item. You'll have the perfect oddly shaped space to put your actual item in after.

Here's an example of what I mean. I used the full size Mickey & Minnie postcards, and made the text fit around it. Impossible without having the Mickey there when typing. LOL, that page is from 2000 - done in 2001.

And now....we are all going back to digital scrapping. Jeesh, I could have saved myself a whole lot of $$$ in between there. ;)

Splash that looks FABULOUS!
Thanks. Its funny looking at that scrapbook now....YEARS later. There weren't many products on the market, so you had to make your own stuff back then. And you'll notice my style changed greatly through-out as I learned. I worked on that book for a couple of years...and sadly never finished it. It still sitting there. I found that I needed to keep things simple to get them done. Thus other trips are done, but not that one. I made it way too big of a project.

Great idea!! I've seen that Mickey page of yours before, in fact, I bought those Mickey and Minnie postcars off Ebay, intending to scraplift your idea. I haven't done it yet, I'm about 3 trips behind.

Great, than I don't feel so bad. lol I'm years behind too. I told DH tonight I want to go back to 35mm film, drop it off at CVS, pick it up, throw out the bad ones & shove the good ones in an album. Done.

Nooooo, instead, we take hundreds of digital pics. Keep them all. Try to fix any bads ones. Crop. Upload. Order prints. They sit because I INTEND to scrap them into some fabulous album YEARS later that no one else will even care about.

And this year alone, I've added learning a new camera, learning PhotoShop Elements & now a Wishblade to my self imposed torture. Someone please stop me. :rotfl:

Maybe I should make this into a new thread. lol

I hear everything you are saying. :rotfl:

I started scrapping SO late. My kids were 9 & 7 and we'd already taken 3 Disney trips, all before I even started. No way I'll ever catch up.

And digital pictures......I just started last week looking back through the early years folders of digital pics and trashing the bad pics. I keep everything!!

I am currently saving for a new computer, I want an iMac, my current one is FULL. So no digital scrapping will be done until I have it.

And tell me about the wishblade, that is something else I was considering with the new computer.

Here, I'm hijacking my own thread. :rotfl2:

I have a craftrobo (same machine different company and slightly different software). I love but there is a leanrning curve to it. I still can't do many of the things available for it and I haveothers have made, use the autotrace feature, and I can use the drawing tools enough to trace parts of things. I don't feel ready to make things freehand though.

I tend lay out my albums putting pictures and stuff into each page protectoir and making a list of both my journaling and anything I want to cut. Then I will start the cutting and while the cutting is happening I journal and print it out. I rarely journal by hand. I will also surf dis and other websites while I am cutting. Occasionally I will be designing somthing while I cut but I tend to do my designing first, and then do the cutting. I will choose out my colors and in a folder for that day make a file for each color with all of what I need to cut out spaced on the page. Then I cut each color.

Some things it really speeds up. I was able to make a baby's first album (6x6) with 20 pages in about 30 minutes including the cutting (I already had the files). It was very simple for a baby shower for a coworker I don't know well but she loved it.

Mine were 12 and 6 :scared1:

I started with all our vacations, a Christmas album and the Disney ones. (One 7x7 DLP one 12x12 WDW) and now I'm doing their "life" albums - one each, DS13 is already vol 2, funny how many more pics you take of the 1st baby :guilty:. Plus a recipe book for each, with the pile of recipes growing BIGGER! But I've just ordered some great embellishments for our honeymoon album (I didn't like the wedding ones, that will probably be plainer). Then I might look back thought older holiday photos, or even do an album about me - a non-sequential one probably.

No way, the Dark Side *is* more powerful! ;)

To answer the original question, I keep all the scrap items but scan them to use on the digital pages. The originals are usually acid infested and dripping with lignin, just waiting to bleach out a nice scrapbook page! ;) The scans are clean as can be.
