My Dad and I are traveling together to WDW at the end of April for a father daughter getaway. To ensure that he'll have the best time possible, we're renting an ECV from Walker for him for the first time. I think he's looking forward to this trip more than ever, since he won't feel the self imposed pressure to keep up with all the walking (we did one time talk him into riding in a wheelchair from time to time when he needed it - a great help he later described as the "cat's meow"!)

I've looked at all the information on Walker's site on how to break down the ECV since we'll have a car we'll be using to travel around. I feel fairly confident, with only minor trepidation, being that I am less than mechanically inclined.

My question is whether we'll be able to charge the batteries for the ECV in his room in the evening without having to reassemble the entire vehicle. Can we bring just the batteries to the room and charge them?

Any help will be most appreciated....

Most of them can be done that way. You should also have room to bring the whole scooter in the room if you move things about a bit. Just be sure to bring a extension cord with you. You never know whether or not there will be a plug exactly where you need it.

If you get the scooter and all in the room the batteries can be charged right there on the scooter without breaking the scooter down. For my scooter I just take the battery off and take it to where I want to charge it. No need to break anything else down. The type of scooter that Walker rents I am unfamillar with, so I don't know exactly what you need to do to take them off to charge them.

I appreciate the quick response! and thanks for the tip on the extension cord - I had read that in a number of posts, but hadn't added it to my packing list...

Make sure that you call and ask them. I have had some rental scooters that you could not charge without the entire scooter assembled. On one the plug was no where near the battery area. I never did worry about taking the rental apart so not sure if the ability to do that makes a difference.

If you have a small travel scooter the batteries are in a pack and you can charge the pack directly.

If you have a standard ECV which uses two U-1 batteries It must be reassembled to do the charging, and the three-pin cable from the charger will only plug into the ECV.

With my old ECV I paid about $40 to get a special charging cable built so I did not have to reassemble the ECV. But my car is kept in a garage so it is secure. The added problem in trying to get the batteries to the room is they weight 25 pounds each, as if they are made of lead (which they are).

I'm pretty sure that all the ECV's we've gotten from Walker, the plug was on the body, not the battery, so it had to be assembled. There are two batteries. My cousin and I have disassembled and reassembled them. They're not too bad. Here's a tip. Get garden or work gloves to help get a grip on the parts. They work wonders.:thumbsup2

When my aide rented a scooter for our stay at WDW, she also would check the battery if she was going to be in one place for a while...like eating dinner. Most of the restaurants will plug it in to charge for your dad while you are eating.

Many thanks to all for your kind responses - the tips are appreciated...

Can't wait - four weeks 'til we leave for the "world"!

Hello plutos pal. To answer your question we stock what is known as a charging harness. This device lets you charge your scooter without having to reassemble your scooter. When staying off Disney property this item is magic. Please phone Walker Mobility, and I will be happy to throw one in at no extra charge.

Thank you in advance,

John R. Walker
