? about Character autographs

I know this may sound silly (never been before) but my friend lent me her Disney World home videos and I noticed something I wondered about. Everytime her kids went to a character to have them sign they would have their book open and ready for them but they would flip it back and look at the front cover.... Do you suppose this was to check to see if it was Official Disney or something????? I didnt know if they were told to sign only them or they gave them something different for having "official" stuff. I was just wondering cause I want to buy the Official autograph book for son when we go. Also does anyone know how much they are in the park (they are $8.95) on ebay plus the shipping. THANKS

The characters flip it back to the cover to see if the child's name is written there. If it is, then the character can personalize the autograph.

The characters will sign any type of autograph book, Disney or not.

Also think they do it to make sure book is "right side up" So when they sign their autographs will all be going same direction. I have my own authograph book that i made bt having charcters each signing on a piece of card stock and than I put them ll in a scrap book.

But sometimes they'll ask for the childs name too...The fairy godmother does this i think...i don't remember anything before 2000 so...i might be a little foggy on the memories....*memories....misty water color memories....at the corner of my mind(like so many other stuff)*

Thank you so much. I didnt really think that they would not sign other books but I just wasnt sure .... That makes sense them looking for the childs name (DUH ME)....
Does anyone know the cost of the book in WDW versus Ebay?

If memory serves me right, the books are $6 in the parks. You can also get them at the resorts too.

Don't just write your child's name on the inside cover but also your address and phone number - that way if it gets lost and Disney finds it, they can mail it back to you.

That is why we write their first names very large in front of book. So the characters can see it. When my kids were young they were so impressed the characters knew their names.

In back we write our last name, address and the hotel we are staying at. I was told if we lose it, they will get it back to us.

I think the best thing in our autograph book is Goofy's autograph. He signed my daughter's book while it was upside down. Typical Goofy. Are we special or has this happened to anyone else?

You're right! Characters check the covers to double check that the book is rightside up (though they occassionally mess up) or to check for a child's name. Be sure your child's name is ledgible! Or sometimes they are just curious about the book. I know I like to look at covers from passed years. They are certainly allowed to sign any books from other parks. Characters that I have been close with have signed everything from the usual Disney books to Universal books to planner books to maps to napkins to basketballs....hats....scraps of paper...t-shirts...wdw travel guides....Disney picture books....just all sorts of stuff.

I love that the characters sometimes check for a child's name. We took my niece to the Cinderella Dinner at the Grand Floridian. The Fairy Godmother sits in the lobby and meets the children. We were in the first seating so she arrived in the lobby after we were already seated. My DH took our niece out to meet her and get the pic/autograph. She came running back in to me with the biggest eyes and the most excited smile.
"Aunt Shelly, Aunt Shelly - The Fairy Godmother knows my name" she said in complete awe. One of my favorite memories of the trip.

I have never seen them at Disney stores but the one in Orlando airport may since they seem more like extension of parks. The store here on the DIS does sell books.

He signed my daughter's upside down too.

I was really trying to avoid the whole character autograph scene (didn't want to waste any more time in lines), but while at LTT last year, my 5 year old grandson noticed when Chip visited the two little girls at the table next to us, he signed their books. My grandson asked, "What are they doing?" Somehow, at that moment, I knew I was sunk. After I explained, he said, "Oh, I want to do that too!"

Now, reading this post, I am going to get him an autograph book and put to use the helpful hints here. I have a question. I notice people use fat sharpies because they are easier for the character to handle. Doesn't the ink run on to the next page? Any advice? And do you attach the sharpie to the autograph book with string or something similar or not?

Maybe someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that Disney did not like sharpies, because they are permanent markers, and could mess up the costumes.

I think it is easier for the characters to sign with fat pens, easier to hold. We carry a pack with us and if one gets lost, no worry, we pull out another. Someone suggested regular school markers, like crayola. I thought that would be fun to have them sign in different colors.

I use my zig scrapbook markers except on t shirt that was a fat sharpie.

The Sharpie Markers are not good if you want to use the autograph in a scrapbook. The ink is bad for the pictures you may use with the autograph. If the ink will bleed through the paper depends on how thin the paper is. I hope this helps. Have a great trip.

The autograph books are great but as mentioned in other posts, other great ideas is to bring a hat, t-shirt or even a pillowcase to get autographed. I know our autograph book from our first vacation is sitting in a box somewhere. But a few years ago we took a $2.00 hat from wal-mart and a sharpie to the parks and it turned out great. My DD loves to wear it. We just folded it to where we wanted it to be signed. If you do this, make sure you get the waterproof sharpie so it doesn't wash off.
