We were looking at puppies today and found one called a "poobee". It is a mix of a poodle and beagle. This one looked more like a beagle w/ slightly corser fur. It was very cute and loveable. DD wanted to take it home, however, we are just looking right now, but hope to be getting one soon. We want a small to medium dog (it would be an indoor dog) and one that gets along well w/ kids.

I haven't found very much at all on the internet about them. Has anyone here heard of them? I think they could also be called peagle, boogle or poogle. Any info would be appreciated. :dog2:

A woman named Katie K9 is on the radio in the Twin Cities each Saturday.
She's said these "breeds" of dogs used to be called things like "my poodle got out and got together with the neighbor's beagle and now we have puppies" and they were free to a good home. My brother was always bringing those kinds of puppies home from friend's houses to try to convince my mom she "wanted" a dog. It's ironic that what were mutts before are now selling for a lot of money.

I see more and more of these mixed breed dogs being bred and sold for unheard of prices. ( i work at a large 24 hour vet clinic)

I think the newest is the "Puggle" 1/2 pug 1/2 Beagle.
I would look up both breeds and see if you like either of them becuse you are getting a little of both :)

Remember the Labradoodle? that was last years big thing ( half poodle and half lab)
there is a person here in Dallas breeding Shorkies LOL 1/2 Shih Tzu 1/2 yorkie

My brother-in-law and his wife have a jug. (Half Jack Russell, half Pug) He looks more like a pug, but has the hyper temperment of a Jack Russell.

It's a mutt, nothing more. You would be much better off researching breeds that you like and then find a reputable breeder. Don't ever buy a dog from a pet shop or a backyard breeder. You have a huge chance of spending $$$$$ at the vets during the dog's lifetime.

If you like mixed breed dogs, no sense in paying big bucks for designer mutts. Just go to the nearest shelter and pick one up there.

I have to agree here. There are so many dogs out there that need a home. If you want a good breed with children and doesn't shed try the bichon. I have one and he is great with DGCH. Great for an indoor dog too. Seriously, you need to do alot of research on what type of dog you would like first.

The shelters also have a wide array of purebred dogs as well.

Also, breed specific rescue groups (you can find these by going to the AKC website). They temperment test the dogs, test them to see if they are good with kids, other dogs and cats, etc.

We adopted a 5 month old standard poodle puppy from a rescue last year. He is a fabulous dog. (which, BTW st. poodles are fantastic with kids) Expect to pay a couple hundred of dollars since the dogs are kept/trained/given shots by individuals. They also will interview you pretty thoroughly.

On the other hand, we got a doberman/lab mix from the local shelter (which thank God, is a low kill shelter) 2 years ago and he is a fabulous dog (although not at all suitable for the 1st time dog owner.) as well. I have no doubt that he would lay down his life for his mommy (me, he's a big 80lb Momma's boy) or for my daughter, yet he is very loving and kind.

So there. I've rambled way too long. Do some research, don't buy from someone selling the flavor of the week and consider adopting.

I'll shut up now. :teeth:

Try petfinder.com. You can search by zip code for animals available in your area and specify what size and age you are looking for--you can even search by breed. Most shelters have their animals on there, as do the rescue groups--you can see what they look like from the comfort of your house. There are purebreds and mutts.

We are also in the process of looking for a pet and have found some interesting prospects on petfinder. Another benefit we have found is that many of these animals are being fostered in a home and the "foster parent" can tell you all about the animal's behavior (housebroken?, chews everything?, digger?, barks incessantly?, etc.) Good luck!

You haven't found much about them on the internet because a "poobee" as they were marketing it, is not a breed. It is a mix. Since it is not a breed, there are no breed traits that you can rely on. You will not know if the dog will tend towards the poodle temperament or the beagle. The coat can change as the dog grows out of the puppy stage. The dog will be just as much a mystery as any mixed breed dog. The sellers just named it a cute, fancy name to get big bucks out of an unsuspecting public.

::yes::

I do not get the appeal of these 'designer dogs' personally. I suppose, being an uncouth, uncultured, heathen Southerner, it's beyond me. ;)

Completely agree.

Please don't support the horrible people who are making these mutts and charging a fortune for them. You don't want to support them, as other animals suffer because of it. Esp if you found the pup in a pet store - those pups come from puppy mills that are just horrid horrid places. Just do a google search if you would like more info on how horrible they are.

If you would like a mutt, your shelter is FULL of them at a much lower price and you will be saving a life. My mutt, rescued at 6 weeks, is a joy to have and healthy as a horse. If you would like a purebred, your local shelter will still get many in as will rescue organizations. If you opt to buy from a breeder, please do your research on what you should get from a breeder. Breed specific organizations will have contact info on reputable breeders in your area. PM if you'd like a list of things to look for in a reputable breeder that deserves support.

Well, that Katie K9 is pretty blunt, but she knows a lot about dogs.

Personally, I'm holding out for a cross between a BULLdog and a SHIH Tzu... "what kind of dog is that?" "Why, it's a Bull ****" :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

And if you still want a "laberdoodle" just go to your local shelter where so many have been dumped since the craze has subsided. :(

Have had Poodles consistently since 1971 and am certainly familiar with their physical characteristics. Can't see how crossing them with a Beagle could *possibly* enhance their appearance. Can't see how the Beagle could be enhanced by adding the "curly hair" gene to his lineage. Seriously, stand the 2 side by side and try to "picture" the results! :crazy2:

I agree 100 percent with Goofy! Ditto also that your combo may not be so cute when it grows up.

I want to add that some of these new trendy combinations are just plain cruel. My SIL has a pomchi (pomeranian/teacup chihuahua). It's so sad that someone bred a dog that only weighs 2.5 lbs soaking wet. But my SIL loves the fact that she fits nicely in her designer handbags. And she paid $1000 for her mutt. :confused3

Ugh.
Your sister reminds me of Paris Hilton, who gave up her beloved "TinkerBell" when the dog got too big to fit into her bag.

When I worked in the mall, I would pretend to have an intense fear of dogs whenever somebody walked up with a dog in their handbag. I would tremble and start to sweat (I can do this on command) and have a huge faux freak-out attack. Because dogs (unless they are guide/service dogs) do not belong in the mall. They are called HOUSE pets for a reason.

I also told a teenage girl who brought her pet bunny to the mall that he'd make a lovely stew and beautiful mittens. :upsidedow :teeth:
