ABD Trip insurance?

We are traveling in February and are looking for trip insurance. We are considering getting it through ABD. Does anyone know if their medical coverage is primary or secondary? Do they cover the costs or do you need to submit to your personal medical insurance first?

Thanks!

Have you asked to see a copy of the insurance policy that is issued? it would answer your questions

I don't know what state you are in, because policies *can* vary by state. I looked at the policies for Ohio, and the wording is rather confusing, but I *believe* it is saying that the policies are Secondary. They define what it means if the policy is either Primary or Secondary, but then seem to say well, in this case, it's Secondary. But I suggest you call ABD to find out for sure, because it's just not 100% clear to me, and I've looked at a lot of policies!

ABD has 2 policies now, a "Standard" plan and a "Plus" plan. The main difference I could see with a quick look is that the Plus plan has "CancelFlex" coverage that is basically "Cancel for Any Reason" coverage that covers "75% of non-refundable payments and deposits for trips up to $30,000". The Plus plan also, surprisingly, has a lower "per insured" limit of $30,000 for trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage. The Standard plan has a "per insured" limit of $50,000 for both.

You can check out sort of generic policies here (it will ask you what state you are in to download the correct version):

We have opted to go outside of ABD for our trips, especially since we often do pre stays and book our own flights.

Thanks for the info. I will call. I looked at the policy online for CA but couldn't find any info about primary or secondary coverage.

Check out Section VI, General Provisions, second paragraph, Excess Insurance, and Section VII, Coordination Of Benefits. Primary and secondary are mentioned for the CA Standard policy purchased on or after April 1, 2024.

Thanks for pointing this out. It reads as though the coverage is secondary but I don't see that spelled out clearly.

I always purchase third-party insurance so I can choose the specific coverage needed and I can insure every part of our trip.

As you are finding, insurance policies are written in what I call lLegalese”. Any claim rep will tell you, coverage is determined by facts of the specific loss at the time of that loss.

But generally reading - this highlighted part tells you the policy would likely be excess (secondary) unless it is for one of the four aspects listed after “except “ or as per state law. An example of excess might be theft - your home or renters policy might be primary for theft while this one excess. But for Trip Cancellation this one would seem to be primary.

For the Coord of Benefits, which deals more with medical, there are rules which determine how this plan would coordinate with other health insurance you may have, such as through work or being a dependent on someone’s policy.

Similar clauses are pretty standard in most any insurance policy, to try to prevent people from collecting multiple times for the same loss.

Same. We also purchase it within 14 days of putting down our deposit so any preexisting conditions would be covered. Our TA, FWIW, also recommended using 3rd party to cover flights/transport to the airport, and our pre/post ABD nights. It was also cheaper, but covers more. YMMV.
