I have just been informed by ABD that they have returned to the previous policy regarding their travel insurance.

Once again, if the insurance is added and paid within 14 days of booking your Adventure, pre-existing conditions are covered.

This is good news.

Thanks for letting us know, Kevin! Too late for next year, but I'll know for future reference!

:woohoo:

Has anyone shopped for/booked insurance for an ABD trip with companies other than Disney? If so, who do you recommend? I am outside my 14-day window, but our trip isn't until next June and I have not purchased airline tickets, yet. So, I am procrastinating on the insurance.

I booked insurance with a firm other than Disney for our cruise last year and it was about 1/2 the cost of what Disney charges. I have not yet gotten a quote from them for our ABD trip.

I have used TravelInsured for both of our ABDs and several cruises. I usually go through InsureMyTrip but end up choosing TravelInsured policies. They appear to offer good coverage (although, knock on wood, we have never had to make a claim) and are very reasonable in price. Luckily, to date we don't have any pre-existing conditions that we need to insure for, and I only book trips I know I really want to do, so I also don't worry about policies that let you cancel for any reason. This helps keep the cost down. I am mostly concerned with the insurance covering not being able to go due to illness, death in the family, etc. I typically wait to purchase the insurance until after I pay in full. Since we use miles for our flights, I am not too concerned with insuring those, which we tend to purchase well in advance of paying in full for the ABD or cruise.

I have also purchased insurance from other companies as well as from ABD. ABD's insurance is far superior to DCL's insurance. And if you're getting up in age as some of us are, ABD's policy tends to be a really good deal compared to outside companies, unlike DCL's Policy. I would always price out both to see which is better for you.

For my last few ABD's, ABD's insurance was priced much better than what I could get from an outside company. So I purchased through them. And I *do* need to worry about the pre-existing condition waiver. But mid-year, ABD changed their policy, and weren't buying the policy until you paid in full (like DCL does) which meant that you couldn't get a pre-existing condition waiver unless you paid your trip off in full within 14 days of booking. (It's required to purchase the policy within 14 days of booking to get the pre-existing condition waiver). Kevin fought seriously hard for me and others of his clients to get ABD to honor the policy we purchased the insurance under. But this year, I went back to outside insurance. (Although now it appears that ABD has gone back to the way they were).

I have also purchased outside insurance for cruises, my first couple of ABD's, my trip to Hawaii, another tour I had to cancel due to a shoulder injury, etc. I usually end up with Travelex Travel Select or TravelGuard. I've made claims with both of these companies, and had zero issues with them. You can check out www.tripinsurancestore.com to do some comparisons.

If all the stuff I just wrote confused you in any way, or you want any further clarifications, just let me know, I'd be happy to answer.

Thanks for the info! I didn't pay much attention to the ABD insurance when I booked because a) we were almost a year out from our trip and b) the DCL insurance is expensive compared to other vendors, so I knew I would want to shop around.

I'll take a look at my ABD quote again to see what the price for insurance was. Luckily, neither my son nor I have an pre-existing conditions. I am more interested in insurance for an unexpected illness/injury or death in the family. I doubt I will be able to use miles for our plane tickets, so I'll need to insure them, too. I know that adds to the cost. I used Insure My Trip when I booked for our cruise.

I use InsureMyTrip and have for several of our trips. I even insured our airfare for our trip to Nevis in April (I don't want to take any chances since you never know what's around the corner). I don't have to worry about pre-existing conditions, but for some reason I always purchase the insurance within 2 weeks of booking a trip!

One big limitation for me with ABD insurance is they don't cover pre and post-trip nights at hotels unless you book with them. Since their prices are much higher than what I would pay if I booked on my own, I would be out the money for hotels if I ever had to cancel a trip. Usually we stay at a different hotel anyways (I like to book through AmEx Fine Hotels and Resorts).

FWIW I did have to cancel London / Paris ABD 2 days before it was to start. I had no issues whatsoever with insurance coverage. I was refunded everything except for the cost of the insurance. I had to leave the hotel in London on very short notice and they did not charge me for the additional night that I was supposed to stay. Since this time I have ALWAYS purchased trip insurance, no matter the cost of the trip.
