Abd Germany hotel questions...

A little over 4 months until we leave for our German adventure woohoo! I have looked at the hotel websites, and was wondering if anyone who has been on this trip can please tell me what type of rooms you have at each destination? I see several categories of rooms and wanted to know which is the level ABD books for you.

Also, is it possible to get a cot at the kempinski? Just found out my brother is moving to Austria for 6 months and it would be nice if he could stay with DH and I for a night after the ABD ends (we have 2 post nights in Munich booked as of now). He is a few hrs drive and I don't like the idea of him having to make a long drive home after an afternoon with a stop at a Biergarten... He may be a responsible adult but I'll always worry about him lol. Thanks in advance!

We just took this trip in September 2013.

In Heidelberg, we were moved to the Hotel Europaische. We had a very nice standard room.

I was very leery of the hotel at Waldeck, as it was described as "rustic". They have taken a medieval castle and gutted it and built a luxury hotel inside. The hotel is not air conditioned, but the nights went to 40 degrees. ABD will provide a fan. The room was beautiful and modern. Easily our favorite hotel.

The hotel in Rothenburg was very nice. It looked like something out of a German fairytale. The rooms were small and again...not air-conditioned.

The Kempinski in Munich is ultra luxurious and ultra modern. Our room was very nice, but not big enough for a cot. The shower is run by a touch pad and it is here that we had a conversation through a closed bathroom door.

"Do you remember the metric system from high school?"
"Odd question, but I remember that everything is based on 10."
"Do you remember anything else?"
"Why are we having this conversation now? What are you weighing or measuring?"
"Specifically...do you remember Celsius?"
"No...why?"
"You have to set the temperature on the shower and it's in Celsius".
"I remember zero is freezing and 100 is boiling."
"Not really helpful."

We found 38 or 39 degrees Celsius was a perfect shower temperature.

We were on this adventure in July. Our experiences (me, DH, DD20):

Heidelberg: we stayed at the Crowne Plaza. Regular standard room, two beds and a table. No room for a cot. Air conditioned. Very nice indoor pool.

Waldeck: Castle living, modern style. no air, but fan and windows with a nice breeze as you are up in the mountain. We had two rooms - what a thrill for DD. "German twin - two separate mattresses pushed together. Enough room for a cot if needed.

Rothenburg: quaint German hotel with uneven walls & floors, gorgeous woodwork, such character! We had almost a suite - German twin and a twin, plus couch and two armchairs with coffee table and desk. Separate room with closets. Bathroom huge. No air but fan. Could have had a small party in that room! Loved this area.

Kempinski: gorgeous. We had a King and a twin roll away. Lots of room for another bed. We didn't have the fancy disco showers lol many had, but the bathroom was huge. Wish I had a few more nights. Lobby was stunning. Indoor pool but no time to even put a toe in. Lol

Thank you very much, the review of each hotel is very helpful! I will note the celsius temp... I can easily see DH and I having the same conversation . We went to the UK last summer and our room in London required you to leave your room key in the touchpad by the door to get anything electric, lights, heat, TV etc, to turn on... this resulted in 2 trips to the lobby until a bellman finally took pity on us and showed us what to do to activate the touchpad for lights... needless to say we are not tech saavy beyond a lightswitch lol!

There are so many great hotels listed, it seems like it is a nice variety. With only 2 nights at each hotel though, I think we will have to get crafty with packing, seems like a live out the suitcase kind of trip

Seems like we will have a blast on this trip! Thanks for the reviews of each hotel, I am really looking forward to it. I think my brother will be fine if he ends up staying over... even if we end up in a smaller room, he can camp out on the floor if it comes to it lol!

Now I just need the next 4 months to go by quickly! There is a new German restaurant by our house in Boston and we tried it out the other night... we are now even more excited for this trip

Amazing trip! We had some clothes laundered at the hotel in Rothenberg to reduce the packing. I thought they did a nice job.
