Greetings! My family is booked for Dec 2022/Jan 2023 ABD China trip, but not feeling too confident that it will go due to mandatory 14 day quarantine (regardless of vaccination status) period upon entry into China. I have been patiently waiting to book our airfare due to the current state of affairs. I was wondering if anyone else was in a similar situation and how you were proceeding with your ABD trip?

I'm not really in anything like your situation - my ABD is domestic and is in September. But even for that, I have not purchased my airfare yet. Just too much uncertainty. I'm waiting a while to see what happens with Omicron.

Sayhello

I’m booked on the NZ ABD in December. I’m being optimistic and have already started booking my flights and pre/post hotels. When possible, I’m making sure I book refundable fares and making hotel reservations that don’t require deposits.

The W.H.O recently asked countries to lift their travel bans. Not sure if that will happen in time for summer travel, but some countries have already made changes. However, we know that China moves to its own beat, so it’s anyone’s guess if they will be open by then.

As an aside, I have a Chinese coworker who hasn‘t been to see her family since Covid started. She normally goes each summer for about 3 weeks. When I ask her when she’s going again, she tells me not until she doesn’t have to quarantine. She said she would have to quarantine for 21 days if she returned and wasn’t interested in doing that.

We are on the New Zealand trip starting Oct 31. Hope it goes. Did you book travel insurance with ABD? We discovered that booking pre days and post days on our own and not thru ABD makes all of that, as well as flights and country entrance/exit Covid issues outside the coverage . Spent lots of time with the insurance carrier as well as limited time with ABD going over the policy terms.

I always book my trip Insurance with Traveled Insured. They cover Covid under their medical and consider it to be a normal medical issue(my over simplified paraphrase). They also offer bed and rest as an additional option that covers up to $4000 in hotel costs if you test positive and have to quarantine due to Covid at the end of your vacation. I’ve never had to file a claim with them, but have never heard anything bad about them. When my other trips were canceled, they gave me a credit on the travel insurance I’d bought and allowed me to use it to pay for insurance on another trip.

So my family is booked on the same trip so it's. Nice to hear about someone in the same position we are in. We have already resigned to the fact that this trip will be cancelled and just waiting for ABD to do the same so we can get our deposit. We rolled our deposit over from a 2020 Rhine River sailing as this was one of the latest available at the time. China is still not issuing tourist visas and I just don't see them opening to tourism until much later in the year.
