ABD Backstage magic Thoughts

I just came back from the Dis Exclusive ABD Backstage Magic tour on July 6-11th. I was the winner of the ABD part of the Beyond the Parks podcast series from last July. As the winner, I thought I should give something back to those who are thinking about ABD as a WDW alternative.

My background is that I usually travel alone. That is partly due to being the only big Disney Parks fan amongst my friends and partly by choice. Group travel seemed scary to me because it takes alot to good conversation from me. I’m more of a listener than a talker. It helps me to open up. I also brought my 70 something year old mom, so it brought some trepidation to me. Now that you have the background, I am going to give some thoughts on ABD and the tour itself. (Warning: minor spoilers possible.)

This is a very active style of travel than many people are used to. I even felt a little challenged by it. You will start between 7 AM and 8 AM with Breakfast and then go off to different activities with the trip. It is a frenetic place at points. Due to a late leaving from Walt Disney Studios, we didn’t get to Grand Californian until 5:30 PM and had little time to prep for the scooter and a break.

I also suggest that if given a break, take that break. We were lucky enough to have a two hour lunch break on Wednesday. I should’ve used a half hour of that as a break in the room. By 3:40 PM, I was ready to take a half hour to cool off in the room. Mom took the rest of the night off because of that pace.

If you love Disney Parks or Movie history, your mind will be amazed at what you're seeing multiple times during the trip. The things I can safely say I saw including holding an Oscar and Emmy, saw how Imagineers solve problems before they become $10 million headaches and how TCL refurbished a crown jewel of a movie theater in the Chinese theater. The true highlights are what you will see in the Backstage areas of Disneyland and Imagineering. Revealing those things would ruin it for everyone else who takes this tour. What you get from this tour in memories more than makes up for the very active style of travel you experience.

I’ve also learned that guides and your fellow attendees can make or break a trip. The DIS fans on the trip were awesome to both me and my mother. The group was a welcoming towards me and mother. The running joke is that the people in scooters should be the lead blockers for the group and clear the path. This was a very interesting and engaging group of people. I met everyone from school teacher to a TV Station researcher.

Alyssa and Summer Rose (our guides) are simply amazing at what they do. This was also the first time doing a Backstage Magic tour with ABD. Their different personalities played off each other well. Alyssa had a fun and enthusiastic spirit. Her energy helped my energy at times during the trip. Summer Rose had strong organizational skills and could set the right tones in places like Walt’s Apartment. They also made a Disney magical moment for my mom.

A couple of other quick thoughts before I wrap up these thoughts on the Backstage Magic tour. First of all, the hotels are excellent properties. I will cover the Grand Californian in my Disneyland specific thoughts in a couple of days. The Loews Hollywood had some of the most comfortable beds to sleep in I’ve ever experienced. It also has an excellent location in the middle of Hollywood. If you wanted to explore more of LA, Metro was nearby. Food was pretty good also. My favorite meal on the whole trip was the Tam O’Shanter. I have a new appreciation for good Prime Rib.

One other suggestion is that you should do a day before the trip and after the trip. For those who are traveling from the East coast especially, it will help you have a better experience by not dealing with the stress of travel. I missed some things in DLR by not staying an extra night even off site.

My overall thoughts on this is that I can do this style of travel again. I would gladly pay for an ABD trip again. This seems to be a good way to experience Ireland without a lot of the extensive pre planning (besides flights). If you want to do the ABD Backstage Magic, I would highly suggest that you do this through the DIS Exclusive trips. Kevin really seem to plus these experiences in the pre-planning stages with ABD on this trip and the other DIS Exclusive trips.

Thanks for the review. Looking forward to hearing more.

I'm going to be doing the DLR part separately, since that can help a lot more people than putting it with these thoughts. What are some of your further questions about ABD and Backstage Magic that I could help you with?

I'm just interested in the tour since I'll be doing it in December. I've also done in before (July 2012) and am curious what might have changed.

They used to do a tour of the El Capitan, but now they go to the TCL Chinese theater. It's a very fascinating tour because the interior of the theater was renovated to become an IMAX theater last year. That's one known change in the tour. They do two days of Storytellers Cafe Breakfasts instead of just one. I will cover Storytellers in my DLR thoughts.

Interesting to hear that your tour included a tour of the TDL Chinese Theatre...our BSM ABD (Adult Exclusive) June 8-13 had a backstage tour of the Dolby Theatre where the Academy Awards are held...our tour of the theatre was amazing...with a few surprises...

Maybe, the Chinese is done for General tours or special groups and Dolby Theater is done for Adult Exclusives. I do know the website lists the Chinese Theater as the first stop on Day 2.

Having been one of Tom's fellow adventurers, I'll echo the suggestion of arriving a day early and staying an extra day if at all possible, especially if coming from the east coast. Gives time to settle in a bit before the official trip begins and allows for some decompressing before flying back.

Definitely take those "release" hours for some rest, even if just sitting on a park bench and watching the world go by.

You also get to experience the wonders of LA Freeway traffic on the trip from the Disney Studios to the Grand Californian. Made for the quick run to your room and back down for dinner. On the other hand, it also allowed us to make our dinner time, by walking down the middle of Main Street while it was still closed just after a band marched and played to the hub. Paddle of Power indeed. Fun looking at the inquisitive looks we were getting from the guests still being held behind the ropes until after we passed by.

We're actually on the tour right now (regular group) and did the Dolby Theater tour this morning. I think it depends on what is going on in the theaters. Really enjoying the tour so far. We have Alyssa and Jason, who are both great. Group is 41 with lots of older kids, teens, and young adults. I haven't counted, but I'll guess in the 10-15 range.

Jason was shadowing Alyssa and Matt on the June 8-13 BSM ABD....that's great to see him and Alyssa together as guides....

CaliforniaGirl09...was Jason feeling a little "green" on one of your stops today????

The DIS group I was on was a little smaller and was only 33 without the guides. I think it was only five or six pre-teens and teens on my group. A good number of couples or family members. I remember a kid in my group who had just finished fifth grade, but he was the youngest. He seemed to overall enjoy the tour.

What did you guys do on your preday(s)? I'm arriving a couple of days early and am still debating between going to DL for a couple of days or going straight to Hollywood.

We went straight to Hollywood. I went to Universal Studios Hollywood because I hadn't been to Orlando in a couple of years. I had a pretty good time there. I also ate at 25 Degrees in the Hollywood Roosevelt hotel.

Loved 25 Degrees. Even if you don't go to eat, be sure to stop in the lobby of this hotel to take it all in. It reminds me a bit of the Hollywood Tower Hotel.

Another suggestion is the LA Farmer's Market. A bunch of nice little booths with food and crafts. We enjoyed Monsieur Marcel.

I was travelling across country so I arrived on Saturday afternoon. After arriving at the hotel, I went to In N Out Burger for dinner and then walked around Hollywood Blvd for a bit, picking up some souvenirs. On Sunday I went to Mel's Dinner for breakfast and then walked the entire Walk of Fame (3.5 miles X 2 as I did both sides of the street)...I then met up with our Adventure Guides who were available from 10 - 2. I then went to see Maleficent at the El Capitan theatre. I know some people in our group went to Universal Studios and Warner Bros Studios on Sunday. I was advised to take it easy as the ABD is very busy and they were right.

Since I had been to Hollywood previously, I had been to the Farmer's Market and the Grove, but they are a great place to visit if you have never been. Also, all along Hollywood Blvd are the sightseeing tour buses or the stars homes etc. if that is something you are interested in (I was not interested in that).

I haven't been there in a while, but I've always loved Olvera Street, which is the oldest street in LA, and a part of the original pueblo that made up Los Angeles (and therefore part of the El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historic Monument). Shopping, restaurants, and a few historic sites.

It's about 15 minutes away from the Loews Hollywood Hotel.

ETA: Oooo! Apparently you can take the Metro Red Line from the Hollywood/Highland Station (near the hotel) to Union Station (near Olvera Street)! Takes about half an hour. Union Station is very, very cool also. That would be a nice way to spend a few hours.

Sayhello

Exactly what we did except substitute Du-Pars for Monsieur Marcel at the Market.

Suggestion on going to the market is to schedule one of the Fiat drop offs available through the Loews. They can only drop you off and not pick up, but it's a free and easy way to get there. Nice little car too....

I hope you are enjoying your BSM trip...I have a huge favour to ask...could you ask Alyssa or Jason what model of Nikon Coolpix camera they use. I remembered Alyssa saying that it was waterproof, drop proof etc and I thought our pictures were fabulous, including the nighttime shots. I meant to ask on the last day and I forgot. Thanks in advance
