The Los Angeles Times is (finally) reporting this morning that Disney and AOLTimeWarner are holding high level talks about combining the news operations of ABC and CNN. Talks center around whether the effort would be a strategic alliance or a full on partnership, but any arrangement would definitely include sharing of bureaus, correspondents and resources. The move is designed as yet another cost savings measure for Disney which looks to close most of ABC News in effect outsourcing the operation to CNN.
Talks between CBS and CNN have occurred occasionally for a some time, but have continually broken down over TimeWarners desire that CNN control the combined news operation. Who would control a ABC/CNN partnership is not known. The rumors that have been circulating claim that either a new company (jointly owned by Disney and AOL) will be formed or that CNN will purchase the ABC News division from Disney in exchange for a long term contract to provide services to Disney.
Just remember that this is Hollywood where anything is possible
