OMG... I've been following her on Facebook. I sure hope she is ok.

A rescue effort has been launched in hope of finding Abby Sunderland, 16, who set off her emergency beacon locating devices from the southern Indian Ocean early this morning.
Sunderland, who had been attempting to sail around the world alone, endured multiple knockdowns in 60-knot winds yesterday (Thursday local time) before conditions briefly abated.

However, her parents lost satellite phone contact early this morning and an hour later were notified by the Coast Guard at French-controlled Reunion Islands that both of Sunderland's EPIRB satellite devices had been activated.

One apparently is attached to a survival suit and meant to be used when a person is in the water or a life raft.

Abby's father struggled with emotions and said he didn't know if his daughter was in a life raft or aboard the boat, or whether the boat was upside down.

"Everything seemed to be under control," Laurence Sunderland said. "But then our call dropped and a hour later the Coast Guard called."

Abby is hundreds of miles from land. The rescue effort is being coordinated by the Reunion Islands and Australia. Sunderland had been sailing in 50- to 60-foot seas and it was dark when the EPIRB devices were activated.

The Sunderlands are asking people to pray for their daughter, a high-school junior from Thousand Oaks, Calif.

Abby was for several months one of two 16-year-olds attempting to sail around the world alone. Australia's Jessica Watson completed her journey last month, just days before turning 17.

Abby's brother Zac, who graduated from high school, completed a solo-circumnavigation last summer at 17.

The timing of Abby's trip was criticized by some because it was placing her in the middle of the Indian Ocean when the stormy Southern Hemisphere winter was at hand.

I have been following her blog since the beginning. I"m so sorry to hear this. I hope she is found safe and sound!

Seems like all of her equipment has been hinky lately. Hopefully its just a malfunction.

ETA: It also makes the "Where's Abby?" portion of her website kind of eery!

I'm just sick about it. I've been rooting for her too... Even though I think her parents are nuts to have let her go. :(

I really hope she is ok and her poor parents... I can't even imagine (and don't want to) what they are going through.

This is terribly sad! I hope they find her safe and sound!

Oh no! Prayers for her and her family.

Boy the internet truly is a despicable place sometimes. I went to read some of the wire stories about this, and even though I know how cruel people can be, some of the comments were downright disgusting.

Can't people understand that challenging yourself and living life like an adventure is a good thing? People are calling her and her family stupid, and other "colorful" things. Ugh. :sad2:

I had not even heard about this young girl attempting this!

As sorry as I am for the parents, I do have to question their judgement....
I also hope that there is a happy ending and they find this girl.

I am always torn between thinking people who risk their life for adventure are crazy or heoric. Personally I would want my child to reach adulthood before attempting anything like this or like the young boy who just climbed everest...

I agree.

I hope she's found safe and sound.

I hope she's okay. Not a good sign when the EPIRBs go off. If she's in the water, or on a liferaft in 50-60 ft seas, she doesn't stand much chance. I've followed her and her brother throughout their adventures. Brave kids with brave, supportive parents. I wish them all the best. Hope a miracle happens and she's located.

One report I just read said the closest boat is still 40 hours out. Doesn't look good. :(

Yeah, that's my thoughts. As much as I want them to find her, I think it's going to end badly. :( My heart goes out to her parents and family. And her too if she's still hanging on, that has to be super scary.

Her website is redirecting back to the blog. I think it has been taken down.

I agree.

I have real concerns for all these "youngest to do something" stories, whether it is sailing around the world, climbing Mount Everest, or driving race cars. While I understand helping kids achieve their dreams, I think sometimes common sense and safety get sacrificed.

Here's hoping Abby is found safe and sound soon . . .

Gah! I don't pray much, but I'm certainly putting out a request on this one. Pleaseplease let her be okay! Oh my goodness I can't imagine... I know I'd never let my kid do something like that at that age; I can NOT imagine how the parents must be feeling right now. :guilty:
