I guess all we can do is hold out hope for her. I agree that it does not sound good.

I had not even heard about this young girl attempting this!
As sorry as I am for the parents, I do have to question their judgement....
I also hope that there is a happy ending and they find this girl.
I am always torn between thinking people who risk their life for adventure are crazy or heoric. Personally I would want my child to reach adulthood before attempting anything like this or like the young boy who just climbed everest...

The article on FoxNews (which I normally don't read) says that the 2 beacons set off were both "manual" beacons. The automatic beacon signaling the boat is taking on water was not activated this morning.
They also said they went off at 6am Pacific Time. So right now it's been about 6 1/2 hours. Let's hope and pray that the automatic beacon not going off is a good sign, and maybe the boat has become completely disabled, along with the phone.
Call me "mean spirited" but I agree with you. Adults make decisions that perhaps children shouldn't.![]()
I don't' think it's mean spirited unless you are hoping for them NOT to find her. I question the parent's judgment too, but I try to remember that all kids are different, and while I don't *think* I would ever allow my kids to do such a thing, I'm not in their shoes. I really feel for them though, because if she isn't found how will they not blame themselves?
I really hope the auto-beacon wasn't set off, and not that it was broken too like it seems everything else on the boat was.
I am PRAYING that they find her. I was sick to my stomach when I heard this. DS#1's first thought was pirates. As much as we like to have our children seek their "heart's desire", something so dangerous and so risky is nothing that I would have ever considered.

Help me understand; I don't know boating at all.
If the manual beacons went off, that means she deliberately activated them, right? If she were still in the boat, wouldn't she have activated the boat beacon? So she's probably in the water separated from her boat?
Hmmm, I didn't think about pirates. Gosh she is so vunerable out there alone.
