Abby Sunderland Missing

The article on FoxNews (which I normally don't read) says that the 2 beacons set off were both "manual" beacons. The automatic beacon signaling the boat is taking on water was not activated this morning.

They also said they went off at 6am Pacific Time. So right now it's been about 6 1/2 hours. Let's hope and pray that the automatic beacon not going off is a good sign, and maybe the boat has become completely disabled, along with the phone.

I think the worst part is having to wait 40 hours before anyone even gets to her.

(honestly, all this time, I thought maybe she had been followed by a crew to make sure she was safe. Not helping or assisting in any way just watching over her.)

I can't imagine my child being 40 hours from help if she needs it. Heck, I can't imagine myself being 40 hours from help. I'm all for living life, and I pray this girl is safe, but this just seems so foolish to me.

Oh no. I feel like I know her. Of course I don't, but I read her blog every day. I'm worried. I hope she's OK.

I'm praying for her, too, but as a h.s. teacher, I have to wonder. We preach to teens that their brains aren't done forming yet, that is why teen drivers tend to make poor decisions, same with drinking and drugs, etc. Yet here are both her and her brother doing something so extremely risky at such a young age? My DS already wants to do a lot of things like this, but I've told him not until he's grown.

Prayers for her and her whole family, no matter our opinions....

Terri

I had not even heard about this young girl attempting this!

As sorry as I am for the parents, I do have to question their judgement....
I also hope that there is a happy ending and they find this girl.

I am always torn between thinking people who risk their life for adventure are crazy or heoric. Personally I would want my child to reach adulthood before attempting anything like this or like the young boy who just climbed everest...

Call me "mean spirited" but I agree with you. Adults make decisions that perhaps children shouldn't. :sad2:

How frightening!

I guess if the worst is true, at least it happened doing what she loved.

Many many prayers for the family!

I think you will find that Fox News is probably more reliable than the MSM.

I don't' think it's mean spirited unless you are hoping for them NOT to find her. I question the parent's judgment too, but I try to remember that all kids are different, and while I don't *think* I would ever allow my kids to do such a thing, I'm not in their shoes. I really feel for them though, because if she isn't found how will they not blame themselves?

I really hope the auto-beacon wasn't set off, and not that it was broken too like it seems everything else on the boat was.

I am PRAYING that they find her. I was sick to my stomach when I heard this. DS#1's first thought was pirates. As much as we like to have our children seek their "heart's desire", something so dangerous and so risky is nothing that I would have ever considered.

I knew you would be praying for her dawn. :)

I have been following her blog. My thoughts and prayers are with her and her family.

Hmmm, I didn't think about pirates. Gosh she is so vunerable out there alone. Why didn't she have someone with her???????

Help me understand; I don't know boating at all.

If the manual beacons went off, that means she deliberately activated them, right? If she were still in the boat, wouldn't she have activated the boat beacon? So she's probably in the water separated from her boat?

I am not going to get into whether I think she should be doing this or not but I am praying that she will be found safe and sound! :thumbsup2

That poor girl, I hope she is found safe and sound. Prayers going out for her family

I believe the boat beacon is an automatic beacon that only goes off when the boat has submerged. If it has not gone off means the boat is still above water.

I have to say this is one of the first things that came to my mind as well. She is a pretty and young girl.
She may have set off the beacons when she realized she might be in trouble from someone.
