Abandoned Attractions

Man I've always wondered what those buildings were from google maps and etc..

What was the reason behind them abandoning it and create the All-Star resorts?

The All-Star resorts pre-dated them by several years. There was about 9 years between the opening of the All-Stars and POP Century.

Until this summer, WDW has not built any new Value-class accommodations since the completion of the existing half of POP Century, because they did not need the capacity.

Pretty much explained by this post a few pages back.

Thanks, I just stumbled upon this thread right before I left work so I didn't have time to browse.

But it's good to hear that they are resuming the completion of it. Seems like all the foundations have been laid.

Got ya. So pop is newer than the AS resorts? Didn't know which was newer.

Crazy pics!! Robo you must have super google earth!! :)
Gotta love Bing Bird's Eye.

Do you know the history behind it?

It wasn't a "waste of time, money, manpower, and space" when they started it. The problem was 9/11/2001 happened, the economy and the travel industry tanked, and they didn't need the rooms for a long, long time.

Has nothing to do with "going green", or raising prices.

And it is FINALLY going to be completed (work started several months ago), but as completely distinct resort, called the "Art of Animation Resort". (now whether that is a good theme is for another thread).

Any updates on progress on the "Art of Animation" resort?

Lots of prep work and cleanup of the site. I don't think much if anything structural has been done yet, but I haven't seen a recent report.

Has anybody ever tried crossing the bridge to the abandoned section??? Is there something blocking the way when you get to the end or at the beginning??

Cool thread!!!!:thumbsup2

There is a substantial barrier blocking the way.

Does anyone remember the canoe rides they used to do around Tom Sawyer Island? I think it was something like the Davy Crocket Canoe Ride? It was really fun and people powered--everyone got an oar and it went around the lagoon. The host told cheesy jokes like on the Jungle Cruise...miss it....

They still have those at Disneyland. We did them this summer and had a blast!

I don't know about 'substantial'... a few years ago my friend and I jumped the fence at night and wandered over there for a little bit. Pretty freaky but no one said anything to us.

Here's my trip report from that night...

I had been reading and seen youtube videos of the unfinished Legendary Years at Pop for awhile now. I think the story goes that Disney started construction of the buildings but after Sept 11th, construction stopped due to the decrease of visitors. They're supposed to be starting up again maybe soon? So I had mentioned it to Evan who surprisingly had NEVER heard of it but really wanted to go see it. I've seen videos of people wandering the site so I knew it wasn't 100% illegal to do. Now... the BRIGHT and SMART thing to do would have been to do this during the day and sunlight, right? Well, apparently Evan and I weren't really thinking straight and decided to go snoop around a deserted unfinished abandoned construction site at 9:30pm. But hmm...how do we get there????? Looking at the maps I knew it was on the other side of the bridge and lake so we headed over that way..

so we were at the generation gap bridge..

and after we crossed, the iron fence just wrapped around and wouldn't let you go any further. I was ready to call it a night but my fearless leader Evan was all about seeing the construction. After he poked his head and arms around the bushes that were on the other side of the fence he proclaims he sees something and it's clear after that one small row of bushes and trees.

ME: You want me to JUMP this fence and CLIMB through bushes and trees in the pitch black?!
Evan: Um...yeah? The moon is out so we can see where we're going
Me: wow... you owe me big (as I throw my leg over the fence)... lol

I also pointed out that if we got caught or if this was illegal in any way.. he was leaving the next morning so it didnt really matter. ME on the other hand still had 4 more days so if we got booted... I would have killed him.

After getting through the bushes we could see all the buildings laid out in front of us. Straight ahead was what would be the main building (with all the big numbers on it) and then off to the right was what looked like room buildings.

So I'm a scaredy cat when it comes to these things so I think I stuck to Evan like glue the whole entire time..... here's a few pics of the adventure.. (we had to keep taking pics b/c it was too dark sometimes and I needed flash to see where I was going!)

trekking through the unkept grass..

Oh....so we get to the front of the building and decide to walk around to the other side first. We get there (luckily for some reason it was easier to see over there) and there's this huge white structure sitting in the grass that kinda looked like a cement mixer from far away...which would have been expected, right? Well instead after closer inspection we realized it was a... submarine?!

yeah it was... and then we started getting freaked out..

We headed back to the front of the building and started walking towards the room construction

I really dont know why all these pics came out as bad as they did....

some unfinished rooms..

thank God the door was locked or he would have dragged me in there..

so after getting thoroughly freaked out I finally convinced him to head back to civilization and we could go back the next morning during the daylight. Deal. Whew! So we high tailed it out of there, back through the bushes, and over the fence. yay! we're alive!

did get a great view of the hotel though!

Very interesting pics. Thanks for sharing. Probably was illegal or at least frowned upon. :confused3 Did you go back in daytime?

From the recent pics I saw (can't remember if they were here or on another site), it looks like they put in a decent wall. Now, certainly you could scale it if you really wanted. And I don't know if it was easy to just go around it, but it didn't look like they wanted it to be easy...

Nice photos -- thanks for sharing.

Saddest part of all is that it looks like Pop was MEANT to be seen from that angle. At least now there's a chance people will be able to see it from there soon.

I'm so jealous. I love exploring abandoned buildings but it isn't DH's thing and it's not something I'd ever do alone. Even if it was his thing I doubt we'd risk it at Disney for fear of getting kicked out or something though.

Fusion World is slated to open in the near future. It will feature a restaurant serving really hot food, a gift store specializing in glow in the dark (forever) items and a rollercoaster type ride with speeds in excess of 400MPH. The best part about visiting Fusion World is that it is guaranteed to be around for a long long time, with a half life of over 700 million years! We won't be reading about this attraction in the abandoned attractions thread!
It's the park that keeps on giving! For the rest of your life. Which is now considerably shorter.

and I miss the medieval style store in the castle.

I was concerned with this too during my trip last December as they were doing some renovations within Cindi's Castle. I found the items from the store in the back sections of one of the stores on Main Street. I don't rembember which one, but it was on the opposite side of the street from the Emporium.

After spending way to much time reading the entire thread I was suprised to not see the below link (I may have missed it).

Walt Dated World
http://waltdatedworld.bravepages.com/

There has been a link for Yesterland which focuses on Disneyland, but I have found Walt Dated World to be a treasure trove of information on past attractions, restaraunts, shops, etc focusing on Walt Disney World.
