We're scheduled to leave for WDW for our first "points" stay next Sunday. I just got a call from my dad that my grandmother (who has been in & out of the hospital for the past month) has gotten much worse. Multiple problems & she's very weak. I'm an only child & an only grandchild, so of course I need to be here if anything happens.

Our March trip (on rented points) was cut short because my FIL passed away. With the way our luck has been going, I should have paid more attention to what happens to points when you have to cancel short notice. Can anyone advise me? I've know there is a "holding" status, but what exactly does that mean?

If you must cancel within 30 days of arrival, your points will go into a "Holding Account". This means they may only be used to make another reservation within 60 days of arrival. They will expire at the end of your current Use Year if not used and they may not be banked.

If you cancel on the day of arrival, the points are considered used and will not be returned to your account for use.

Hopefully your grandmother will make a quick recovery and this won't be an issue for you.

Best wishes and prayer.

Thanks Doc, for the info, prayers & wishes. Our problem will be in getting to use the points before their use years ends. DH is starting the process of building a new office & this is his only week off between now & at least next January. Our AP's expire next month - this was supposed to be an "almost" freebie trip since the points we are using are our bonus points from our add-on. I guess I could rent the points as long as I am within the holding point rules - but could not transfer?

I hope your recent luck gets turned around in a hurry. To answer your last bit of question at the end, you're assumption is correct. Points in holding account can not be transferred to another owner. Like Doc said, holding account points can only be confirmed within 60 days of your arrival date and if not used by the end of UY, it will expire.

Well, this would be a long shot, but if you cannot go, you might want to just explain your situation to MS... they may be able to help you out in some way.... only they could say what they could do, but it would be worth pleading your case?!

Saying some prayers for your grandmother and your family.

Best wishes -

with everything going on you may not want to do this but you could always rent the ressies out, there seems to be a lot of people that want to go at that time. unless you rented these points from another member then you wont be able to rent the points . make sure you know when those points expire, so you can make new ressies 60 days out. good luck and prayers are with you and your family.

I'll be adding some prayers too. I had a similar situation a few years ago. I too am an only child and only grandchild. My grandmother was in the final stages of terminal cancer when our Millenium trip was planned. We were on pins and needles because we had another family going with us. We debated about trip insurance and everything else, but decided to just chance it. As it turned out, it all worked out, so here's hoping that is the case for you too. I guess at this point I wouldn't cancel until the very last minute. Then if that is necessary, try talking to MS about it too.

If the ressies is a lot of points you may want to excercise your one time late banking rights. I wish I could remember the real name but I can but you have one time while owning your contract to banked pts that are really to late to bank.

Hope things go as well as can be expected.

Also if holding points are used within the last 60 days of your use year they can only be used for DVC accomodations.

Good point, but that is true only if the reservation is actually made during the last 60 days of the Use Year. As long as the reservation is made prior to that time, Holding Account points may be used for a stay at any of the DVC options during the last 60 days.

DVC points in general (including Holding Account points) may not be used during the last 60 days of the Use Year to make a reservation for a non-DVC stay, but may be reserved for that time period prior to 60 days before the Use Year ends.
