I consulted Tripadvisor when planning trips to New Orleans, Savannah GA. and Disney and have been amazed at how negative the reviews are there. I consider myself a pretty average person, picky about some things, easygoing about others.
Ever single place I've researched in a moderate dollar range has been ripped apart on reviews there and I've not just been ok with them,....I've liked them very much.
I think this main difference between the DIS and Tripadvisor is that the DIS reviewers and posters are really going to be engulfed in the Disney Experience. We want to park our car or rental, or get out of our airport transfer and just breathe it all in from the time we get there to when we leave. This means theming everywhere, whether on a high definition in your face way (the values) that allows you maximum Disney for the buck or in more subtle ways with "log" beds at POR-AB, beaches at CBR, or great pools at all the moderates and deluxes (except CR) There are those that want a higher end Disney experience and they can get it at the deluxes. But even the deluxes are supposed to offer a theme experience, not all out luxury.
The main focus of Disney is still the parks. I think it's too easy and a big mistake to focus your attention on the resorts to such an extent. I think the vast majority of visitors are there to maximize their time and attention away from the resort. Don't get me wrong, I'm budgeting in at least 2 extra days to enjoy the resort next year without feeling like I missed out.
I know that there is always a substantial amount of money involved which makes choosing wisely important. Just remember, Walt created Disney to be the happiest place on earth not the place with the best hotels. He created it, but only you can make it the happiest place on earth. Attitude is everthing here.
My advice, be realistic, consider others opinions and why for how they fit with your circumstances and....most importantly....
GET OUT OF THE CAR AND BREATHE DISNEY IN AND OUT FOR YOUR ENTIRE STAY!
