Is it worth it? Booking an American Airline flight and looking for some optional savings. Thanks,

I have this card, but since almost all of my flying miles have been with American it made sense for me to keep earning miles there. The card does have some benefits if you use it to purchase your American tickets in full such as group 1 boarding and 1 free checked bag and they usually run a bonus mile sign up offer that if you spend x amount over x months you get x miles.

We got this one just for the bonus miles (offers vary-I'd wait until you see 50k or higher).

When the year was up, we called to cancel and they waived the fee, so no reason not to keep it.

I wouldn't pay the fee unless I knew I had enough trips lined up that the baggage allowance would pay for it.

AA card for Citi for 50k, then sign up for citigold will also net you 50k.

u can end up with 100k AA miles in 3 months with 2k? spendings...

I signed up in February with a 50K sign up bonus after a $3K spend in three months. Put everything on the card and realized I was really close to the $3K a couple of days before my March 15 statement date so I prepaid as many things as I could to put me over the $3K. By March 17 the 53K miles were in my account and available to use. I used the miles for our return flights for our January trip. I'd forgotten that one of the perks is a 10% redemption bonus so I was surprised when 5K miles were deposited back into my account. Two first class one-way tickets from MCO to PDX for $5.60 each. Not sure if I'll keep the card after the first year, but if they waive the AF, then I probably will. The Group 1 boarding and free checked bag for me and up to four companions was a nice plus.

Definitely worth it if you fly AA. My favorite perk is the 10% redemption bonus. Another way to pick up additional AA miles is to shop through the AAdvantage shopping portal for online purchases. We also signed up for the Citi Gold checking account for an additional 50K miles.

Can you explain what Citi Gold is? Is this a checking account or a cc?
I keep getting offers for 50K miles for AA card. Dh also. I figured if we both do it, we could hopefully fly at least one of us free to Europe or Hawaii next year.
Does AA let you use miles to book one way? We've been Dividend Miles members with US Airways for years and reward flights with them had to be booked as RT. Well, even if you booked one way, it would use RT amount of miles which I always thought was scummy and not very user-friendly. So now with the merge with AA, we are automatically AA members as well.

I'd love to take them up on this offer but we are considering soon getting a home equity loan to close in our screened back porch and making it an office. We also just bought a car for ds 18 and took a small loan for that. I'm afraid too many inquiries might make the HELOC a crappy rate. Maybe I'll wait til that is complete.
We have excellent credit (830+) but don't want to ruin it.

I'm fairly certain you can book one way rewards. The mileage cost is based upon the segment not the round trip.

Citi Gold is a checking account. The offer I had was for 50K AA miles and I had to spend $1,000 with the debit card and make two online bill payments with the checking account in the first 2 months. The checking account is $30 per month but they waive the fee the first two months. Data points say it will take few months for the miles to post and not to close or downgrade the account until they do.

Yes AA allows one way awards which I like as it gives me better flexibility. DH and I always apply for the same card each in order to get more miles and points. Funny you mention Europe and Hawaii. We have applied for several of the Citibank AA cards several times and have been able to fly to Europe each year for the last 3 years and we also just booked flights to Hawaii using AA miles yesterday LOL

Waiting until after you secure your loan before applying for the card is very good strategy.

You don't have to purchase the ticket with it. It just needs to be tied to your frequent flyer account when you purchase the ticket. I've used my business credit card to purchase the ticket and got the benefits.

Great minds think alike! :thumbsup2
We saved our US Airways miles for a long time and at one point they would allow me to change the DM account that would receive the miles for my cc so I gave ds19's account (he was around 9 at the time) but when I tried to switch back they told me I couldn't keep changing it so it stayed on ds's account for years.
We finally cashed out our miles in 2013 for flights to Barcelona for a DCL Med cruise and only had to pay for 1 RT seat for a family of 4. :cool1:
I've had the SWA card for years and we enjoy it but I feel it would be stupid to throw away 100,000 AA miles being offered to us.

You can also redeem AA miles for hotel stays. They do include some Disney hotels and also the Swan and Dolphin.

They sometimes also offer to convert Marriott points to AA miles.

They also have double miles on certain flights.

Go to the Aadvantage website and look for the special offers.

In order to get some promotions you must sign up for them before you travel.

My dh travels alot and generally he does not get to pick the airline, but he does request American due to the customer service. We arent really loyal to any airline. I just see what I can get for whatever airline and how many miles dh has.
