A weird situation...

Another thing you can do to help protect your photos is to set up your website so the mouse "right click" is disabled. If people try to right click on a photo to grab it, you can program it to pop up a nice little message like "Thank you for the interest in my photograph. Please contact xxx if you would like to obtain a copy of it" or whatever you want to have pop up.

Won't prevent the true techies from being able to grab a photo, but the average internet user won't want to figure out how to get around the lock.

And your e-mail sounded great! Professional, but kind. Firm, but also giving permission to the mom to keep the photo.
 
Problem resolved, she added a tag line to the photo giving me credit and thanked me for allowing her to use it :) She didn't add in the link to my site, but I'm not so worried about that part.
