A Wedding, A Honeymoon and a runaway Grandma - Updated 6/6 Finally Finished!

This day ended up being my favorite - non-wedding day of the trip.

We woke up really early (okay, that part wasn't really my favorite…) and ate some breakfast in our room. DH was like a little kid - so excited for the Behind the Steam Trains tour...

Though we used the concierge service quite a bit, our hours didn't mesh well with the lounge hours, and we rarely used it. Now, that may have had something to do with the fact that we had so much left over food and booze, but had I known, I probably would have saved some cash and not done the club level room and gone for a view instead... because the stuff we had the concierge do, I could have easily done myself - I was just enjoying being lazy! oh well you live and learn.

We headed over to the main building around 6:45, grabbed some coffee from the cafe and hopped on the first monorail at 7. We got to the MK in plenty of time (gotta love monorail resorts!)

We arrived at the MK just after 7, and got to watch the sunrise.

Picture252.jpg

Sort of strangely romantic…

Picture253.jpg

DH is such a dork - he purposely wore his "Milwaukee Steamfitters" shirt for the steam engine tour. We were hanging out and the first couple that was joining us on the tour came up and took a look at DH's shirt and commented that they were from Wisconsin too. Then the 2nd couple came up and the guy started talking to DH, he was a retired steamfitter! DH was in heaven. It was then and there that I knew I'd lost him. There was one more couple that eventually joined us.

It was a nice sized group. We were by far the youngest people there, which didn't really matter, but it was definitely noticeable.

There was one couple on our tour who were clearly there just for the glimpse back stage and exclusive pin at the end. They were kind of obnoxious and distracting, and would ask totally unrelated questions about being a Disney employee. The other 2 couples were much like us - wives conceding 3 hours out of their mornings so their husbands could appease their inner 5 year old and play with the big trains. Or as our guide called us "Those who want to be here, and their captives" At least in our case - that was so true.

I think part of my problem was that I was so tired. Crazy tired.

What the Magic Kingdom entrance looked like to me in my half-awake state

Picture254.jpg

DH however was so excited to be there, he was wide awake.
The entrance as DH saw it…

Picture256.jpg

So around 7:15 a rather conspicuous gentleman in a train conductor's hat and overalls came out, so we all gravitated towards him. It was our tour guide Jim. I was not particularly interested in the tour itself, but Jim was fascinating and a great tour guide. He even got me interested in it!

The train pulled up to the train station on cue, and we headed up there to meet it.

Picture257.jpg

We were let in the gates by Larry. Has anyone ever met Larry? Apparently he's rather "famous" (though I'd never heard of him before) You're supposed to say "Hey Larry, how are you doing today" to which he'll reply "Outstanding, and If I were a farmer, I'd be Out Standing in a field." He'll keep going from there, changing it up for people. Kind of funny..

So weird to see Main Street USA totally empty and deserted…

Picture258.jpg

These are my kind of crowds!

Picture259.jpg

See how tired I am? And just plain enthused to be there.

So we made our way up to the train station, and boarded the very last car in the train. There Jim introduced himself and gave us a little background about himself, and about the WDW trains.

Aww, it stinks that you didn't have the fabulous experience you were expecting at BlueZoo. I was so excited to try The Hollywood Brown Derby (the ONLY table service place we tried because we weren't willing to pay out of pocket for all the other places), but it just wasn't what I thought it would be. I think the only time those places can be sampled is with the DDP. Of course, I never know my health is going to be so that'll never happen. I guess DBF and I will just have to keep going to WDW over and over again and try one or two restaurants each time! :thumbsup2

Ooo, the tour looks like fun! I think DBF would enjoy it even though he's not a fanatic like your DH. He just really loves learning how things work.

love your report, thank, I'm in! Heading over to your wedding report next

Bummer about Hollywood Brown Derby... I hate when "nice" meals like that don't live up to expectations. [/I] I love your logic... repeat visits seem like a must :cool2:

I would highly recommend the Behind the Steam Trains tour to anyone that's even a little interested in trains or how things run and work. I hate to admit it, but it was really interesting, and compared to a lot of the other tours it was very affordable.

:welcome: Thanks for joining in!

We got off the train in Toon Town and DH was picked as the volunteer to switch the track, so we could head out to the Round House (apparently this is what the place where trains are kept and maintained is called - just in case your knowledge of trains comes from 4 episodes of Shining Time Station like mine does)

In case you were wondering…it really does look like a building where the trains sleep…

Picture266.jpg

Jim was commenting about how heavy the switch is and he always picks the youngest guy in the crowd who usually goes up and can't flip it - then he teases him. But DH went up and flipped the switch no problem. The retired steamfitter guy was all proud of him talking about how steamfitters have to be strong. So funny!

That plant just jumped into my shot out of no where!
Picture260.jpg

So we get to the Roundhouse and look around. I hate to admit it, but it was kind of interesting seeing the trains and learning about their rotation and their morning rituals - they literally have to "blow off steam" each morning to get ready.

Picture286.jpg

DH again became entranced with the machinery…

Though I'm not positive, I'm pretty sure this is how it went in his head.

Hey baby - how you doin?

Picture263.jpg

Picture264.jpg

What's your sign?

Picture265.jpg

Picture274.jpg

You come here often?
Picture268.jpg

Picture269.jpg

Work it! The camera loves you baby!

Picture270.jpg

Picture271.jpg

You're such a tease…

Picture272.jpg

Picture273.jpg

Picture275.jpg

You're friend wants to come too?

Picture277.jpg

Ohhhhhh Yeeaaaah!

Picture279.jpg

Picture285.jpg

You know what I like!

Picture286.jpg

Picture286.jpg

Oh wait, I'm married…. And my wife looks pissed. Darn-it!

Picture280.jpg

Maybe she won't notice if I take just one more…

Picture281.jpg

I'm taking a picture of Jim… yeah… yeah… that's it…

Picture283.jpg

Oh come on, just one more…

Picture284.jpg

*exiting my interpretation of my DH's thoughts - too scary. But if anyone wants more pictures of the train - just let me know I only posted about 1/2 of what he took!

There was a lot of technical train talk, that I just - well, just didn't care about…. But DH was super excited, so that's what counts right!

Haha, the narration with all the train pics is hilarious! You've got such a great sense of humor.

Too funny. He should have had his "Mr. Conductor" hat on.

LOL, that was an awesome update. Loved the interpretation of your DH's thoughts. :lmao: Sounds like an interesting tour. Glad your DH enjoyed it so much!

I was in rare form yesterday while writing that. Even DH was laughing out loud!

:rotfl: you know, I was 1/2 expecting a mini Ringo or George Karlin to pop out and start giving us the tour. (though I suppose that would be been really creepy - or meant that someone spiked my coffee :lmao:)

Glad I could make you laugh! The tour was really cool, we both enjoyed it (no really, I swear I did... just not quite as much as DH :cutie:) It's only $45 and there's an AP discount too. I highly recomend it!

:surfweb:popcorn::more please!

Okay! Coming up. :wizard:

Just a quickie to finish up the train tour...

So after about an hour or so, we hopped back on the train and made our way back to Main Street USA.

Picture261.jpg

Picture288.jpg

The Round House tour took about an hour and a half. So now it was time to take a potty break. So we waved goodbye to the train.

I let DH have a moment to himself to say goodbye.

Picture291.jpg

We reconvened after about 10 minutes and went into the train station and listened as Jim gave us a history of the WDW trains, and of Walt's fascination with trains. Jim was a fantastic story teller, and this part totally held my interest. You could hear the passion in Jim's voice as he told the stories, that I just totally got lost in them. My only complaint is that the seating at the Main Street train station is beyond uncomfortable to begin with, and sitting there for 90 minutes was not fun. My butt was totally asleep by the end! Plus the sun was in my eyes the whole time… if only I had sunglasses!

I would highly recommend this tour to anyone that has even a slight interest in trains or the history of trains at WDW. Though the technical stuff wasn't of interest to me - it was really a fascinating tour! Even if I did almost loose DH to his mistress…

So after the tour bid adieu to the MK and headed over to DHS. We had a date with Grandma and Sally!

Your train tour narration cracked me up. My dh is a "railroad enthusiast." That is code for train nut. Anyway, he wants to take this tour but unfortunately, :woohoo:the tour is cancelled for the month of May. We will be at Disney World during the last week in May so I guess we will have to miss it. I am enjoying your trip report, and congradulations on your wedding.

I loved your pics of the trains and your interpretation of what DH was thinking. Too funny! :lmao:

Thanks! I try not to go into DH's mind too often - it's a scary place :rotfl:

Thanks for reading along. So "sad" that the tour is canceled in May. You must be devastated . All kidding aside, I hope you and your DH are able to do the tour one day, sounds like he'd love it!

I know you'll all be crushed... but there will be no more trains for the remainder of the day. Can you believe it?

I found this hilarious, because I tend to forget that not everyone is a crazy planner like me, and that I've been to Disney way more than the average person. In the morning Sally called us and we agreed to meet at 11 in front of the hat. Sally called again and asked where the hat was, and wasn't sure if they could find it. I started laughing and responded "well, it's like 40 ft tall, so…" I felt bad, because having never been there before, it was a totally legitimate question. But fortunately once she got there and saw it she was laughing too.

I don't see a big hat anywhere? Do you?

So anyway we hopped on the bus and had an uneventful ride over to DHS.

We were running a little early, so we walked kind of slowly

DH looked over at his new BFF, but knew he wouldn't get a chance to ride it today…

Until we meet again my lovely…

DSC00917JPG.jpg

We found Grandma and Sally in a line to meet Tigger, so we had them give DH their KTW cards and he ran off to TSM to get FPs. (wow… that's a whole lot of acronyms in one sentence!) I offered to stand in line to get some beverages, while grandma and Sally met Tigger. Once we reconvened, DH came back and said the standby line for TSM was only 15 minutes. So we decided to take our chances.

You swear this is only going to be 15 minutes?

Picture292.jpg

If it's not, please don’t send me to

Picture294.jpg

It took more like 25 minutes, so we played a game of candyland
Picture293.jpg

And hung out…

Picture295.jpg

This picture is hilarious to me… I mean I'm not saying grandma is old… if the tinker toy fits... "Classic"

Picture296.jpg

Chris jokingly said that beating me was to easy, so he wanted to challenge grandma….

Well, she beat him!

So of course, he accused her of cheating. It was hilarious! Grandma still calls him to taunt him that she beat him.

We started over to the Animation Studio, but we ran into a parade, and grandma wanted to watch - so we did....

HAHA, I love the fact that your grandma calls to taunt!!! That's hilarious! What a character.

After being distracted by the parade, we decided to head over to the backlot tour. I was a fan of this back in the day when it was an actual working backlot and there were things like the golden girls house and stuff like that. Now it just seems fake and forced.

Look - some old looking machinery stuff!

Picture297.jpg

Um…..
A tent for really tall rats that live in the subway?

Picture301.jpg

A helicopter from a movie we haven’t seen! Exciting

Picture302.jpg

We were getting hungry - can you tell?

Picture303.jpg

Picture305.jpg

Appitite gone - thanks!

Picture306.jpg

Road!

Picture307.jpg

Herbie…

Picture310.jpg

More props for Pearl Harbor

Picture311.jpg

Seriously, did that many people actually see that movie that warrants them having sooo many props from it? There have been so many other movies with cool props, can't see those too?

Like this gem from Who Framed Roger Rabbit

Picture311.jpg

And the plane from Con Air

The Mickey Plane

The inside of the tram!

Then we were on to Catastrophe Canyon..
