A WDW Fan Tackles DLR in California - A DVC TR

Day 4

Our plan was for today to be our hang out at the pool day and then tomorrow morning we head down to San Diego for the remaining 4 days of our vacation. Yesterday I tried to see if we could stay here longer, but no luck. Tried again today, still nothing. Looks like it is not meant to be and today will be our last day at DLR.

But at least first we get to spend the day at the GC pool! And let me tell you, having hung out by just about all of the Disney pools, absolutely nothing compares with Grand Californian. I could go on and on, but let’s just say it is the best resort ever and leave it at that for now. :goodvibes

So we slept in this morning, had breakfast in our palatial estate, as we have come to call it, and Jeff and I took turns going out for a run. As runners, we both LOVE running the paths and walkways at WDW. No traffic, no dogs, and miles and miles of beautifully landscaped grounds to enjoy. However, at DLR—not so much. Of course, the size is the issue here. After the first tenth of a mile, you are off property and in Anaheim proper. Not so interesting for a run. Ah well. Knowing that I would soon be immersed back at the GC, I was ok.

However, when Jeff got back from his run, the first thing he said was, “We have to talk about our plans for today and tomorrow…” I had no idea where he was going with this, other than knowing that HE wants to stay. So I asked what he was thinking. He explained that he realized would couldn’t stay on points because they were booked, but what about getting a regular room and staying Concierge and actually paying cash, etc. It didn’t matter—he just wanted to stay HERE. For the entire week! This is so unbelievable because he is the one who is always saying that we have to break away from Disney, we need to do a non-Disney vacation and all of that. So I asked what got into him…

A couple of things, but basically it boils down to the Grand Californian. As soon as he got to the resort, he got what he calls “Four Finger Fever.” (Think Mickey hands—4 fingers—get it?) Plus, the idea of being able to stay at this amazing resort was just too tempting not to at least try.

So, we made some phone calls to see what could be done. The only thing DVC had available was the Grand Villa. Um, no, not happening. As much as I love this place there is no way I can justify a year’s worth of points for a couple of nights. And nothing available for cash either. 100% booked solid.

So we changed our plan only slightly. We were scheduled to stay another night and then we were going to wake up and head down to San Diego. Instead, we would stay in DLR for the day and do the parks with Jeff and then head south in evening, as opposed to the morning. Basically, we gave up a day in San Diego for an extra day at DLR.

Once that was sorted out, it was time for DTD and our hang out day!
As we were heading out, one of the CMs asked if we needed help with our luggage since we were moving rooms. Um, huh? Apparently, there was some confusion/miscommunication. When we were offered the 2-BR, it was only for that night. Since we booked on points and had reserved a 1-BR, we had to move to another villa for our second night. Ugh! I wish I had known that. I had enough points to just stay in the 2br for the second night and was willing to pay the difference in points, but it was a matter of availability. So, sadly, we had to leave our palatial estate in order to move to a 1-BR.

Now, here is where the CMs at the GC were incredible, yet again. They did *everything* they could to help us. They were so wonderful about it. They said that they would move everything for us while we were enjoying the parks, etc. And then I explained that this was actually our pool/resort day and they felt just terrible. But in true Disney style, they did what they could to make it ok. They handled the luggage transfer, kept our refrigerated items cool, and promised us the very first available 1-BR so that we would be homeless for the shortest amount of time possible. They took my cell number and promised to text me as soon as it was available.

Finally, we were off to DTD--

DLTripDays45265.jpg

Like most other things in DL, DTD is smaller than World. But it has the same feel. The big difference, though, is that a lot of the shops are non-Disney, so that seemed odd to us. But I loved the choices for women’s Disney clothes here. Trendy and fun and not what you find in World. But then again, some things are the same—like the Lego store and World of Disney!

I also posted a bunch of pics here so that you can see other rooms of the GC. Some of them not only have a DTD view, but are literally IN DTD, as one a poster to this thread noted. Check out the balconies above the shops. Those are GC rooms! Now, I don’t *think* any of the DVC rooms are DTD view rooms, but I am not sure. I am sure one of the West Coasters will know and chime in.

DLTripDays45268.jpg

And like with California Adventure, there is a special entrance to DTD from the resort. It is simply amazing.

DLTripDays45270.jpg

Lunch was at the Rainforest Café which was overpriced but ok quality. Terrible service, though. When will I learn to say to NO to the kids when they beg to go? And btw, we didn’t have ADRs for anywhere, but we didn’t need them. Everything was half empty.

After lunch it was time for the pool. Mid-70s, hot in the sun, perfect. But I hadn’t received a text yet, so I was concerned. It was about 1pm. I had left a day bag with our bathing suits in it, but again, I really didn’t want to be homeless. We strolled back to the GC and no luck, room not ready. So we changed in the lobby bathrooms and went to the pool—which is where we parked ourselves from 1pm on.

Just such a perfect afternoon, I can’t even tell you. Made friends with all of the poolside waiters. I realized, though, that I didn’t have any sunblock—it was packed up with our stuff. So I went into the resort store to purchase a bottle. Upon coming out of the store, I ran into one of the CMs who had been helping us with the move and he again apologized about the room not being ready. I held up my bottle of sunblock and commented that so far it seemed to be the only thing we had to do without. Hearing that we had even been this minorly inconvenienced was all it took—next thing I knew, our bar tab for the afternoon had been taken care of! Again, Disney’s way of trying to make up for the miscommunication and the hassle of having to move.

This again spurred my husband to start the conversation about adding on more points! :goodvibes

We all had an amazing day at the pool.

DLTripDays45280.jpg

Just before 4pm we got the text that our room was ready. Perfect timing as we were all feeling a bit sun-drenched and ready to head inside. Well, any inconvenience I felt about having to move after just one night was gone the instant I walked into our 1-BR Villa!

I mean, check out this view!!! Yes, this is the view from our room! Holy crap! (Note: Slight zoom was used in the first picture, but no zoom in the next ones.)

DLTripDays45289.jpg

Evening was also downtime. Just a light dinner in the villa followed by a stroll through DTD. And we were so in love with our view, that we were happy to just sit on the balcony and watch the park go to sleep.

Oh I do love that part of DTD - looking up and sometimes seeing guests on their balconies! My DW and I stayed in one of those exact rooms you've posted. The brown pergola covered balcony on the 6th floor to the right was just above our room (we were of course on the 5th floor) with a great view of the entrance to the hotel and the various shops at DTD. The nights we stayed there, there was a wonderful electric violinist down in DTD entertaining the crowds. It was neat to sit in our room late that evening and listen to.

No - none of the rooms with the DTD view are villas. All of the villas were added in their own wing on the theme park (DCA) side. 73% of them have a "theme park view", 27% a pool view (but the pool view ones will give you a partial view of the fireworks from DL - the theme park view rooms won't. BUT the theme park view rooms, at least the upper floor rooms, will give a nice view of the new World of Color show opening at DCA on the 11th.

Well, any inconvenience I felt about having to move after just one night was gone the instant I walked into our 1-BR Villa!

What room were you in? This is nearly the exact view I had last November while staying for 2 nights in a studio, except I was a bit more to the left. It is wonderful, isn't it?

We were just there May 16-21 and you said it girl! VGC is hands down the best DVC anywhere! We had such an amazing time. I figured we'd just spend 2 or 3 days on property, then do off-site stuff, but we did not leave even once until the last day (beach day!).
Sure, DLR is a fraction of the size of WDW, but it is a joy to be able to walk everywhere within minutes, and not have to get on a bus, etc. No ADR worries either. The villa lay-out and decor of VGC is the best too. We had the same view you did and got to see and hear them test WoC many times.
I have to disagree with you about Buzz - we like the DL Buzz much better than the WDW one because you can pick the guns up to shoot! :rotfl:
I hope you got to see the fireworks (Remember dreams come true) - they were amazing and by far the best fireworks Disney has ever done anywhere. Wishes looks amateur compared to it! Seriously. We were just blown away by the whole experience, like you, and hope to go back soon!

I love the DTD view rooms..No, no option with the DVC rooms and the one thing I will miss. BTW, I know you are runners, but one time you might want to try the DCA power walk in the morning before the park opens..From what I've heard they go at a pretty good clip plus tell you alot aobut the park.

OMG, I had no idea this even existed! If I am interpreting this correctly, I could go on a power walk through CA before it is open to the public? Get my exercise in AND have a private tour of the park?!?! I am DYING that I didn't know this before!

I haven't tried the power walk, but it's on the scheduled activity list that they should have given you at check-in. It's for all GCH and VGC guests. I also remember a private shopping session at Sephora or Build a Bear with some discount as well as some kids activities (treasure hunt I think?).

I like your trip report and am finding it very interesting. I haven't been to the World since Epcot was brand new. I'm definitely tired at the end of a day at DLR, I can only imagine how I'm going to feel at WDW. Also, having only stayed at VGC, I wonder if I'm going to think the other DVC's aren't quite as nice. That's okay, though. As long as we live in SoCal, I'm sure VGC is where we'll be spending most of our points.

Yes..the days it is is offered (I am guesing it is still going on and shoot..just looked at my stuff and I didn't bring home a daily Grand Activities sheet), you walk (hustle) with a cast member before the park opens. Anyone done this and have more info?

It is a power walk just short of some people's jog. I thought I powered walked but the CM and my DH strides were so long that I was jogging. Looking at last week's schedule, it was scheduled at 7:30 am on Wed (May 26), Thurs, Fri, Sat, and Mon. On Sun and Tues (Jun1), pilates at 8 am.

"Meet one our Guest Activities coordinators and participate in a very brisk Power Walk. Walk while enjoying the sights and sounds of Disney's California Adventure Park before it comes to life. The walk will begin promptly at the time listed. Appropriate aerobic workout attire is recommended (15 minute mile pace) Minimum age to to participate is 14 years. There is no fee for this activity. Please contact Guest Services to sign up, space is limited."

We've done it twice. Both times ended up being the only 2 people walking. It was like a private tour. It was the same CM both times (different stays) and he shared a lot of interesting details about the park. Didn't do it this time, wanted to sleep in ;)

BTW, love your TR. And love your tie dye Mickey shirts! We had a hotel room one stay right over the WOD and the caramel popcorn cart in DTD.

Your DH definitely caught the VGC fever. My DH loves, loves, loves the Grand Californian. He said that if they offered the 2 bdrm as a condo, we would sell our home and move right in. If we could afford it, we would add on more points.

I am loving this report! As East Coasters who just added points at VGC I am so happy to hear how the parks compare and how much you are loving it. I was a little worried we had made the wrong decision but it sounds so wonderful. We probably won't get out there very much but I am so looking forward to it. Thanks!! I can't wait to hear the rest.

Great trip report- we will be there for our first trip next week- reading your report makes me even more excited!

Great trip report! I absolutely love VGC - think it's the best done DVC of all and you cannot beat the location. :thumbsup2 This is getting me psyched up for my trip in 1 week.

That's true it's not FP in CA - but - during the peak season, it's got a Single Rider line...which can work out even better than a FP. It's great to be able to fill in those open seats. If you don't mind not sitting together - it sure can cut the wait time down a lot!!

stopher - I read on the DL boards the other day that they have eliminated the single rider line. Too much abuse by families with children who when they got up front didn't want to split up - or that was the reason given by a CM to one person. It's a big bummer IMO since there isn't a FP. :sad2: The single rider line wasn't a real fast loader but if you happened to catch it when it was open it helped to not have to wait so long.

Day 5

Once again, we got up and each went for a run, had breakfast in the villa and then began our day. Originally, we had planned to head straight down to San Diego after breakfast. But considering that Jeff had come down with Four Finger Fever, he wanted to do the parks! We had to check out first, though, but it was easy. Just called Bell Services, they took all of our stuff and held onto it. We left the car with GC Valet, as our plan was to park tour for the day and then just go back to GC and hop in the car and drive to San Diego once done in the parks.

We started at CA using the private entrance, of course. Since this was Saturday, I was nervous about the crowds, having heard over and over again that these parks are heavily influenced by locals and therefore week-days were totally different than weekends.

Turns out I didn’t have to worry at 9am as again, we walked right on to Soarin’. Seriously, it is maybe 30 seconds from the resort to Soarin. Think about that from a WDW perspective. How long does it take you to get from most resorts to the park, through bag check, through the turnstyles and then across the park?? We were the ONLY ones at this entrance at 9 when the park opened. I know I keep talking about this, but seriously, for someone so used to World, it is just astounding. Even if you stay BC or BW and you are going to Epcot—this is way, way, way closer and faster.

Since the kids and I had already done this park, this was really just a “highlights” trip so that we could go back and do our favorites (with Jeff this time) and show him the new stuff that was here and not in the FL parks. After Soarin’ we did Monster’s Inc. and then WALKED ON to TSM. How often can you say that? I think I mentioned the other day that this is not a FP ride, so we were thrilled to be able to do it. Mulholland Madness was up next. I took pics here because this was where our villa was and again I wanted to show how GC rooms are INSIDE both CA and DTD. Our balcony is one of those pictured here.

DLTripDays45312.jpg

And here they are doing the ride--

DLTripDays45314.jpg

DLTripDays45318.jpg

This was the warmest day, so we did Grizzly River Rapids even though it was fairly early. A few more little rides and a visit with Pilot Goofy, and we had done everything we wanted to do here and it was only 10:30! Time to hop to DL! (Which took less than 2 minutes!) One thing we really liked about character pics here is that they all wear different clothes than in World. We saw Pilot Goofy and Pilot Minnie right outside of Soarin’ and that was fun.

DLTripDays45321.jpg

Once in DL, we found the crowds! Yikes! It was not looking pretty. I quickly walked up to Carnation Café in order to make lunch reservations—scored the last one for 12:30. Otherwise, it was looking like CS was going to be a nightmare…and we had checked out of GC so going back to the villa for lunch was not an option today.

Even though the park looked and felt crowded, there seemed to only be a 15-30 minute wait for just about everything. I grabbed FPs for Space, we did Star Tours (15 minutes) and Buzz (10 minutes), and then headed back to Fantasyland for a few rides.

DLTripDays45323.jpg

We still had time for one more thing before lunch, so we went to Adventureland to get FPs for Indiana Jones and do Haunted Mansion. Cammie really wanted to do the rides we couldn’t do the other day (either because Kel didn’t make the height requirements or because Riley didn’t want to). Sadly, it was down AGAIN. Just not in the cards this trip, I guess.

Time for lunch on Main St. And like so many other things at DL, it is only outdoor seating (with lots of umbrellas for shade). At first I wasn’t thrilled about eating outside—being so used to wanting to get inside and cool down and rest, etc. Our table was right up against the fence so that there was about 12” separating us for the Main St. foot traffic. But I have to say that I LOVED it. Adored it, actually. Just watching life on Main St. go by. And we were serenaded by the Dapper Dans for 3-4 songs! Again, so nice and fun and just oozing atmosphere.

After lunch, the girls and Jeff hit the Matterhorn while Riley and I went for nostalgia and saw Captain EO! This came out right as I was graduating from high school and I remember it SO clearly. It was really fun to experience it with Riley. They just brought it back to DL and I understand that it is coming back to FL, too.

Then we reconnected for a few last things—the Jungle Cruise, since we missed it the other day, and another spin on Mr. Toad and Buzz. Finally, it was time for our last rides. The girls and I used our FPs for Space while Riley and Jeff went off to do Pirates. At this point, it was only 3pm! And we had already done the two parks! We thought about Splash since we didn’t get to it the day before, but let me tell you, Frontierland was a DISASTER. Wall to wall people and you just couldn’t even walk through it. Suffocating. So we passed on Splash and BTMRR was down for rehab, so no Frontierland for us this trip. Too bad since I really wanted to compare both Splash and Big Thunder to their FL counterparts.

There was just one last thing to do…hop back to CA and do Food & Wine! Again, remember that it is only takes 2 minutes to walk from the hub of Main St. through the turnstyles of CA. We had primed the kids that this was OUR time. No rides—they would just have to be patient and follow us around for a bit. We bought them each a frozen lemonade—GREAT parent tip. These were frozen so completely and were so solid that it took over an hour for them to finish. So they were completely happy to have their treats while we had ours.

And no, a couple of hours is NOT enough to really experience Food & Wine. But we had the kids with us, so it was the best we could do. Honestly, though, not too much to report on F&W. It is, of course, much smaller than World. But this year it was even smaller than usual because of ALL of the construction going on. I swear, they are doubling the size of that park! Still, we did the Italian wine walk, the Californian wine walk, and the Belgian beer walk. Also went back to the festival showplace and shopped. We had a nice talk with one of the sommeliers and she really spent a lot of time with us. We have never had that experience at World. But then again, you can eat and drink yourself into a coma at Epcot’s F&W.

Sadly, it was time to go. But we really did A TON and our vacation was only half over! We were SO sad to leave DLR. It was truly a great trip for us. And we learned a lot. Next time, we will stay at the VGC for the entire week and do things in the LA/Hollywood/Anaheim area in addition to DL as opposed to moving and heading to San Diego. There were so many reasons it was hard to leave—we felt like we really knew the CMs since they had greeted us by name so much, and the hardest part is not knowing when we will be back! With World, we always know that the next trip is just around the corner. But with DL…wow, who knows? I think we will have to work it into our plans so that we can come out every-other-year or something.

Seriously, for ANY Disney fan, you NEED to experience DLR. And honestly, it is not more expensive than FL at all. Definitely comparable. Depending on where you live—obviously, if you are in Georgia, you likely drive to WDW and you would have to fly to DLR, so that would be an added cost. However, DVC washes out, tickets and food wash out, too. So you can do it for the same price. As for flying…we live in Maine, so obviously FL is much closer than Cali. Well, we flew to Cali for MUCH less than what I got for airfare to World in March. So don’t let that be a deciding factor. Watch the rates…good ones DO come up!

Next up, San Diego!

Okay, the question really needs to be asked...
Any issues with the toilet seat?

MG

HA! Read your thread, MG! Nope, no toilet seat issues here. :rotfl2:

Yes, it was there in the bulletin! I remember skimming over it and thinking that I didn't want to do a group walk--I never even read the description! Had I spent 30 seconds and read through it, I would have realized what it was and signed up in a heartbeat! Live and learn, I guess.

As for the tie-dye shirts....wow, we got SO MANY comments on those. Everywhere we went. I take it that custom t-shirts aren't that popular in Land? Christopher, thoughts? The CMs, especially, seemed to comment on them. That is why we wore them a second day (after being washed in our fabulous villa, of course! ;) ).

I am loving this report! As East Coasters who just added points at VGC I am so happy to hear how the parks compare and how much you are loving it. Trust me, there is NO WAY you made the wrong choice. This is our favorite resort, by far. We just added on this week and I really struggled and agonized with where to add on. VGC is where my heart is AND it was cheaper. But I know that we won't be able to visit there often. So we bought at BLT instead.

Great trip report! I absolutely love VGC - think it's the best done DVC of all and you cannot beat the location. :thumbsup2 This is getting me psyched up for my trip in 1 week.

Totally agree that it is the best! And have a WONDERFUL trip! Say hello to my beloved VGC for me! :lovestruc

Oh, and here is a MAJOR, MAJOR tip for those heading to DLR soon.

PHOTOPASS!

Yes, they have Photopass in Land, just like World. And it works the same way. However, the main difference is that in Land, the Photoass CD is about $60 (I guess because there are fewer parks and thus you are going to have fewer pictures on your CD).

But here's the thing--you STILL get the DVC discount of $50 off. That means you get the Photopass CD for just over $12!!!! (Tax and shipping add the extra few dollars on.) OMG, talk about the best deal going!

Another comment/thought that I think is worth sharing--

Of course I did some basic research on the boards before heading out to Cali. I knew that everything was "closer" at Land than at World, but I didn't really know what that meant. And I read a lot of stuff that said it was still worth it to take the monorail to and from places.

Well, when we first got to property, we were informed that the monorail wouldn't be running until the week-end. As I was park touring alone with the three kids, I was pretty stressed. It was absolutely NO BIG DEAL. Especially if you are used to World. We were at the Disneyland Hotel for 2 nights, which is the furthest away from the parks. And even that was not an issue. Now granted, I am a marathoner, so I am used to walking and running long distances. But my 7 year old certainly isn't. And none of the kids complained or even noticed the walk at all.

I have also read reports that it takes something like 15 minutes to walk from the DLH to the park. Maybe if you are strolling and taking pictures along the way. If you walk at a normal pace--not really hustling and not meandering--it might be a 5-7 minute walk, if that. I am pretty sure we did it in less than 5. And yes, I walk fast. But I had three kids in tow, so we weren't booking it, by any means. We didn't miss the monorail a bit--other than we love it and it would have been fun to ride it. But we certainly didn't *need* it.

For DVCers, it is nothing to head back to your villa at the Grand Californinan and have lunch, take a nap, or go for a swim. Seriously, going back and forth from the parks has a totally different meaning here. Had I realized just how close it all was, we never would have eaten in the parks. We could have eaten better (and certainly cheaper, though we weren't even concerned with that) by having lunch in the villa. So really consider that.

You've got me ready to book a trip there right NOW! :cool1: Only issue for us is airfare...for 6. :scared:

You've got me ready to book a trip there right NOW! :cool1: Only issue for us is airfare...for 6. :scared:

I hear you on that. We are a family of 5, but my husband's flight was paid for since he was there for work (and then joined us at DL). But we had to pay for 4 tickets. We did REALLY well on SW. And it is much cheaper to fly into LAX and then take the bus to DL. It is a short trip (they say 45 minutes, but we were closer to 30). It was much cheaper for us to fly all the way from Maine (well, the airport we use is in NH) to LAX than it was for me to fly to Orlando in March. So the deals are there--you just have to keep your eye out. And RDU has great fares all the time via SW, so just keep looking. :goodvibes

Now that's just terrible. It was such a boost. Sure you might have to wait now and then, but waiting 10-15 min during summer vs. 90+ was terrific. :sad1:
