This past weekend we had a terrible, freak accident with our golden retriever and our Suburban. We had gone to visit my parents and we always take our dogs. When we returned, the dogs jumped out of the back, just like always. Our golden, Penny, yelped a little and then sat down. She stood up and tried to put weight on her back right foot, couldn't, and sat back down. My BIL had let them out, I went over to check, took one look at her foot and realized she was critically injured. I could see bone in a cut across the back of her foot and now she was starting to bleed.
We were very fortunate that my DH's sister and her family had gone on the trip with us, because my SIL drove Penny and I to the Emergency Vet Clinic and DH was able to stay put with the kids and follow us later. It was not a fun ride. We were about 20 minutes from the clinic and during that time, she was seriously bleeding and started to go into shock about five minutes out.
When we got there, they came out with a stretcher and took her back to try to get the bleeding under control. My DH had arrived by this time (with the entire family in tow) and we were told she would be operated on as soon as possible.
My DH had looked the truck over and found that she had cut her leg on the license plate. On the Suburban, the bumper has a small cut out that the plate fits into. Penny's leg had slipped into this space (which is only a couple of inches wide), bent the plate and as she pulled her leg out, the plate cut her.
Her injuries were quite severe. She has a cut that sort of looks like an upside horseshoe starting at her pads on the back on one side, going up and almost coming to the pads on the other side. The plate went all the way to the bone at an angle and actually cut into a joint. This is actually the most cause for worry at this time due to the possibility of infection. I feel very lucky that she got her foot out when she fell and didn't break her leg...it would have been a bad compound fracture. The ER vet told us they have seen this only once before and the dog lost it's foot.
We feel very blessed to have her here with us now, wearing a very fashionable E-collar, with her foot and three weeks (or more) of antibiotics. We are always super careful with our fur babies and just did not see this coming. My DH is now trying to figure out how to fill the gap so that this does not happen again.
