SUMMARY

Well, another visit to Florida has come to an end.
It started poorly and ended horribly, but in between we had a wonderful time. We did many things we had never done before and repeated some of the things we really enjoy.

Sanibel v Captiva

It’s a bit unfair to compare them, as whichever I choose will make the other appear inferior. That’s not the case, both are lovely, it’s just that I must have a favourite it’s the law.
I prefer Captiva, or at least Captiva Village. To be able to walk to restaurants, bars, shops and the beach is a wonderful thing. At least, it is if you enjoy a beer from time to time. It has more of a ‘heart’ than Sanibel, which is more spread out without any real centre.
Sanibel comes out on top if you like to ride. Bike paths are everywhere and there is much more to see.

Virgin

Well, I’m not actually, not that it’s any of…… Oh, you mean the flight. I thought they were pretty good this time. The failure to provide pre-booked seats continues to irritate and my seat back TV played up on the return journey. I should think myself lucky, Georgia’s didn’t work at all, but they did provide her with a portable DVD player.
Twilight check-in and the Downtown Disney check-in are a definite selling point for Virgin. Far less time spent waiting around in airports.

Weather

Boy was it hot at times. That said I found it more tolerable than I thought I would. Strangely, it was hotter in Captiva than Orlando, but the sea breezes at the beach always took the edge off the heat.
The rain in the second week was a bit of a pain, but it really only stopped us doing the things we wanted to do on our final night.

Friends

It has always been a joy to me that I have met many different people in Florida, most of them I have only conversed briefly with on the Internet. I have not yet met anyone whose company I have not enjoyed.
This year was no different. It was lovely to meet up with Sharon, Evan and their new family and enjoy some time together.
Susan and Lu Beth were delightful and they’ve put up with my constant teasing about their time keeping with good grace and patience. It has to be said, the ladies did well under the harsh regime of the Stringer touring plan.

WDW

After all these years I’ve finally worked out why I love to return to WDW so much. I’m normally one of the most cynical people in the world. I question most things and accept very little that I read or hear without first hand knowledge.
However, in WDW normality does not apply. There’s no terror, no torture, no war, no famine, no conflict. There is only an unswerving belief that man CAN be good and kind, that wishes can come true, that we can live together in peace and harmony.
No worries about work, no looking forward to years of routine. Just happiness, joy and a feeling that it’s great to be alive.

Escapism? Definitely. Unreal? Absolutely, but for the time spent in WDW that matters not one jot.
The need for us all to get away from the horrors of the real world that blares from our TV sets every evening is very real. Two weeks to recharge the batteries with good things, positive things. The rides are mostly the same; we have all done them many times before. They are great fun, but it’s not the reason I keep returning. The atmosphere, the beauty, the sheer joy of immersing yourself in the WDW experience is why I will travel thousands of miles until I am no longer able.

I suppose what I am trying to say is that I think WDW makes me a better person. Less cynical, less self-obsessed, happier. I don’t question why a mouse should make me cheer as he passes by in a parade, I just accept that he can.
Is there still a job going as a monorail driver?

Lastly, can I say a big thank you to all the people who have taken the time to comment on my report and especially to those of you who have expressed concern over my mother’s health and sent good wishes for her recovery.
I am sure she will soon be back to her old self and equally certain that she will one day return with us to WDW. Her love for the place is nearly as great as mine.

As ever Kevin your trip reports have kept me amused for many an evening as I wait impatiently for my first ever WDW trip. :Pinkbounc

Only a month to go and the schedule is constantly filling up as I read about new things to fit in!

Thanks again for the great reports and best wishes to all your family especially your mum. After reading several sets of your trip reports it almost seems like I know you all which is strange, but one of the best things about the Dis.

Kind Regards
Mel

Kev,

I have just finished reading all your trip reports and found each one more compelling than the previous. Within your writings, you have managed to catch the 'spirit & humor (humour)' of a magical WDW vacation.

It was as if I sat here drinking a cup of coffee listening to a freind tell me all about his vacation....wonderful!

I'm going down for my umpteenth time, but for the fourth time with my 10 year old nephew at the end of this month....this what makes it even more special.

Thanks for writing your reports...I will check your web page for all the previous tomes.

Andy

PS I hope your Mom is feeling better.

Kev, that's uncanny. Matt and I have been sitting by our pool this afternoon, watching the kids playing happily in the pool and saying the VERY same thing. Almost word for word.

This morning at Epcot, I had a 'Kev' moment. I was standing watching the fountain dance to the strains of 'Celebrate the Future' (OK, I was singing along, but we'll skip over that bit) and I was totally at one with the World. As it finished, the girls and I looked at one another and we all had tears rolling down our cheeks. As you say, I no longer feel the need to wonder why this place can make me feel this way, I'm just happy that it does.

I was trying to pick out which of your sentences / paragraphs about WDW best echoed my own thoughts but, like Deb, I found I agreed with it all (oh, how it pains me to agree with everything you say! ;) )

The very fact that we all sit at our PC screens wittering on about WDW is surely proof enough that we all feel some affinity with the place, but thanks for expressing it so well for us :teeth:.

I would add that, whilst in WDW, I don't always appreciate how untroubled, safe and happy I feel - it's often not until we visit other places that the realisation dawns about just how special WDW is.

Hope Grandma is soon well enough to be planning her next trip! :)

Great reports, as usual, Kevin! Just off to see your "update on mum" post.

Mike

I have tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat Kevin.

And Debbie, the words of all the Millennium songs - and I'd be singing them all right alongside you, especially make me emotional now.

It isn't only the escapism but it is also the optimism that makes it special.

Thank you so much for your wonderful reports Kev.

Kevin
A huge thank you for sharing your Florida experiences with us. I didn't read absolutely everything, still I've hardly ever read a book from cover to cover but that's not to say I didn't enjoy them.
Hope everything was fine with your mum. ::MickeyMo

Kev

I have finally finished reading all of your trip reports, and have throughly enjoyed doing so. You will have to give me some lessons, as they were fantastic, only wish I could pack my bags today and fly off straight away.

Thanks for sharing.

Thank you Kevin Stringer: Much enjoyed your trip report & especially your comments on what makes WDW special to you. I am working on Yet-Another-Guide to WDW (this one for a very special audience!) & I would like to include your comments about WDW. We are at WDW with children & grandchildren (in shifts!) every January (VWL). Will be in Cambridge May 5-12 for VE+60. I'm the only Yank with a stained glass window in a #1 rated building in England -- St. Catherine's Church in Litlington, Herts. So we enjoy WDW & UK!

Thank you Kevin for great trip reports I totally agree with your thoughts about how Disney makes the world seem a better place. Just wish Walt could know how his dream is still delighting people after 50 years. :grouphug:

Thank you kevin. Yes, WDW does seem a place OUT of the world - fight down to employing CMs to WALK along the roads picking up TINY pieces of litter! I think that's why I hated I-Drive so much - a return to horrible gritty reality (albeit with excellent all-you-care-to-eat buffets and supermarkets with economical beer and Pringles  )

I'll be working back through your other reports when I've unpacked and loaded the washing machine.....oh, sorry, reality check, when I've put the kids in the bath!!

Another fabulous set of reoprts Kevin.

Hope your Mam is on the mend soon.

:flower:
