Okay, my mother had a transplant 12 years ago. I felt horrible about Jesica Santillan and the ordeal that she went through.

BUT: ( taken from http://apnews1.iwon.com//article/20030222/D7PBVOJO0.html)

1) Her parents paid someone to smuggle them in to the US for treatment. As a parent, I understand this. But, the money donated to help her probably could have helped a US citizen. (Bad attitude, I know)

2) Here is the REAL KICKER:

"the family declined to donate any organs from Jesica's body"

WHY WOULD THEY NOT GIVE THE GIFT TO SOMEONE SINCE THEY GOT THE GIFT?

Okay, enough of a vent. I do feel for the family. I just wish they had donated her organs, any that could be used, since they know the importance.

Do you think they could use any of her organs?? They said most were damaged from being on life support for so long.

Don't know the answer, just asking!!!

wow I had no idea.

Im really at a loss as to what to feel, much less what to say.

This will sound goss, but I know that skin from the back can be used for burn victims. I dont know about the eyes, etc.....but any organ surley is important for someone out there.

Even if they couldn't use the organs, I think the symbolism of donating them would have went a long way. Maybe they are just feeling bitter because of they botched the first transplant. I also wondered how they got another set of organs so quickly and if another patient on the waiting list was pushed back so they could try and rectify the mistake they made. I'm wondering if a lawsuit will be next, probably inevitable. Her family must be on a roller coaster of emotions right now, so sad for all involved.

Kallison, I think my dh heard on talk radio that they were suing. I think this is just horrible...all around...:(

What a sad mess!!! :(

I haven't been following every detail of the story; does it seem like they compounded the original error by using the second set of valuable organs after it was already too late? Or was the brain damage a result of something that happened during or after the second surgery?

It does seem wrong for the parents not to participate in the program that they were willing to take advantage of; but given the circumstances I really can't pass judgement on them either. . .

Just a sad deal all the way around. . :(

I had heard that the family of the second donor specifically asked for the organs to go to Jessica.

This is the first I heard that she passed away. Very sad. I will say an extra prayer tonight.

i agree that they still should have TRIED to donate some organs, but with regards to the money used for her donation...

Supposedly the guy that helps them (and has medical power of attorney) also started a 'fund' to not only help Jesica, but other people that needed transplants. According to what I read, they have raised enough money for 6 transplants to have been done...

I still think they should have donated organs if they could have....
