A Vent - Stand duty for sports

I hate the concession stand duty...I wish they would charge more for participating and then pay some kids to do it.

yep.. same here.. I am assigned next week on a night my daughter has practice at a different field. I think we pay more than enough for the season so have to cover it.

Can't she just reschedule for when she is going to be there for a game. I was assigned my mandatory time and it turns out it won't work with my schedule, I was given my time the first week in March, I had no idea what was going to come up in May or June and it turns out my dh will have to go out of town on the day I am scheduled. I am not allowed to bring my kids to the stand either. When I sent my email to ask, the woman told me I could bring my kids and let them hang out on the playground for a couple hours. Uumm no, I don't think so. Its that kind of stuff that makes parents hate these mandatory expectations. Anyway, I was able to reschedule without any problems so it worked out. I don't understand why she wouldn't be willing to work while her dd is playing a game? Between my 2 kids that play I'm at the fields everyday except Mondays :confused3

It's all about money anyway, so charge more to play and forget about the stands. No one needs the junk food anyway.;) Parents can bring their own snacks. Done deal.

Some kids could not afford to play then. Our is pretty pricey, but they sent out some info on field leasing and maintenance, and there is also a fund to buy more land as our League is outgrowing its space. Our snack bar brings in a good amount of money.

No offense but there are way more people who will drop the ball and not care about it if you use volunteer than if you use the word mandatory. I asked for volunteers last year for my son's baseball team for umpires. By League rules, we had to provide a home base umpire or a field umpire for each game. My first email was nice asking for volunteers, saying you can pick your date, since we all have other obligations, we even said it did not have to be you specifically that you could have Uncle Joe do it if no one else was available they just ahd to be over 18.

I got 3 responses out of 12 back. Send out another email, telling them what dates were taken, still nothing. My final email told them that this was mandotory per League rules (which it was) and then I assigned dates accordingly. We had one person flake the whole season.

I also dont agree with penalizing the child for their parent's behavior but unfortunately it happens around here. Parent gets the child their late the player is penalized.

OP so this lady does not show and then loses her money but she proabbly wont care about that, but it stinks bc you are still short a person to fill a shift.

No offense taken!:thumbsup2 We have had stuff like this in our leauge. It just seemed to cause a lot of tension and bad blood with the madatory statements. We actually had money taken away from our team members when they worked the shifts because someone said they didnt work hard enough!:confused3:mad: They did, and they missed their own kids play in a tourney too because they worked the whole two days in the stands. Not nice. They also wanted both parents to work at different fields from their kids. I will not leave my child unattended to work parking duty across town. Sorry.

Thank goodness we have a buy-out (there are plenty of teens here who want to make money). My kids are on so many teams, it would be a fulltime job! If there is no buy-out option, I think it would be nice to let people sign up for times.

As for the consequences of her not working the stand, when she registers next year or for fall ball she is going to be made to pay $50 on top of her registration. She will only receive $25 back if she works the stand next year. The other $25 will be kept by the association. She knows this tho as it was in the registration papers that she had to sign to sign her daughter up. I guess she doesn't care? Who knows.

So, it's not really *mandatory* then, is it? Perhaps she'd rather pay the $50.

Why does a kid's activity have to turn into a work release for parents? I'm so glad they didn't do things that way when my kids were in activities (except scouts... in cub scouts, parents HAD to attend all meetings, which was ridiculous).

I don't remember all this hoopla when I was a kid.

Me either!:worship:

Really my mom was always working our stand. My brothers played, I was too old, but she worked her shift for their teams, and then bc she could not say no she would end up filling in empty spots for flaky parents like in the OP's example. My brothers are 30 and 26.

I was just curious about or league rules so I dug out the sheet. This is exactly how its printed:

The concession stand is 100% VOLUNTEER. Every cent the concession stand yada yada yada

All parents are required to work the concession...................

Doesn't sound 100% volunteer to me

It seems we too are penalized like a pp mentioned. If you do not show up, obviously your $25 is kept but the following year you will have to pay another $25 deposit. If you don't show up the following year another $25 will be added to your deposit, and so on.

I know exactly where you are coming from and the frustration. I was in charge of getting people to work the gates and the concession stand for the community football league for at least 3 years. WHAT A PAIN!!

The way I did it was to have a huge sign up sheet for each thing. At practice or a team parents meetings I told the parents that I was passing around the list and every slot had to be filled. I warned them ahead of time that whatever slots were not filled in, I would put in the names of parents who had not signed up for that area. I still had those who refused to work at all, no matter what the threat; but I always had more than enough parents willing to make up the time or work double shifts to work in the those parent's places. It wasn't exactly fair but it at least the job got done and the kids got the benefit of the money raised. It was just a matter of the parents willing to work being aware that there was a need and giving them all the choice to either work during their child's game or during someone else's game.

Problem with that is that they are never penalized if they choose not to return next year. I would still inform her she has to pay the $25, and let her worry about producing her own paperwork to prove you wrong. Most people will not have their paperwork.

OUr league has it, we are required to sign up at registration, in fact we can't register our kids if we don't sign up. They also post the schedule on their website, so your name is listed under the time and date you signed up for. Apparently our league takes it very seriously.

Being one of the managers, I personally saw exactly how much money was made. The one year, Kim and I kept track, just of the hot dog sales. In 17 weeks, we MADE $5500.00 - on hot dogs. That took into account, the cost of the dog, bun, wrapper and the other misc items.

This is our MAJOR fundraiser of the league. I would much rather buy a hot dog and a pop to support the league, then try and sell any other fundraiser.

I agree I would rather buy a snack. The one I hate is the Batathon. Basically asking people to give my kid money for trying to hit some balls:confused3

Amen!
Between mandatory food worker shifts, mandatory team snacks, mandatory raffle ticket sales blah blah blah....

Cripes. I have a full time job. Why in the heck does recreation have to be so "corporate?" I just want to sit in my lawn chair and watch my kid drop pop flies. Sue me.

We had booster clubs for that, and still do. For concession stands, I know they'd have an adult filling in and supervising, but mostly there were high school kids working the stands.

I don't think parents are flaky for not wanting to take on what amounts to a part time job just for a kid's activity, especially if it's mandatory. I've done my fair share of volunteering, but if someone ever had to tell me I had to do it, you can forget it right there.

Mandatory means nothing unless there is a KNOWN consequence. If a consequence has not been stated, then you need to make sure there is one for next year. Like if the parent does not fulfill their duty, kid sits out a game. If the kid risks being penalized maybe the parents will make more of an effort. I ahve to tell you, I don't have time for that concession stand crap. I wouldnt do it either. Especially if the time was assigned, which just created more of a hassle schedule wise.

I have a hard enough time getting my kids there in time for warming up. Then to have to be dug out mom some nights, keep score. Ugh. This is probably a one and done season as far as softball goes. Way too much parental involvement. Back to swimming and gymnastics.

If this is the rule then I think you (or whoever) has to enforce it fairly. Either you follow the rules or you don't get your money back. I don't think the rules should be bent for whoever has the best excuse (short of a catastrophe), which would create problems. People know going into the season what the rules are.

With that said, I get your frustration (as I do a lot for my child's sports, too), but your post sounds a little harsh (IMO) as there are families that either can't or won't make it to games. Why is their business. I see both sides as I was on my own with activities growing up as some of these kids are today, and now I happen to have the time and inclination to help out. Not everyone does.

The way I do it on our team is to just recruit volunteers of people who WANT to help and ENJOY helping. I've worked with people who resent being there and as far as I'm concerned, they can stay home, lol. Those of us who want to be there have a lot of fun with it. (Although IME most people want to help in SOME way even if they can't give a lot of time.)
