A "Too good to be true" code with Alamo was really a great deal.

Late last spring someone posted a code for Alamo that generated a lot of controversy which I didn't really understand. I used the code that produced a great rate that included EVERYTHING; the insurance, a full tank of gas, no airport surcharges, etc. We were out the door for a week in a midsized car for $172. We picked up the car this week and it was a real code that was honored with no special ID required, so if anyone booked that code, have no worries. It works.

If someone uses a code which includes insurance coverage, but is not technically entitled to use it, if you were to have a collision, there is a good chance that coverage would be denied.

That could be a HUGE problem.

I'm all about saving money, but would not risk this one.

If you keep an eye here and check regularly, you can definitely do better without using questionable codes. 4 days ago I booked a full-size vehicle at Alamo for 9.5 days for $143 for early Nov! :thumbsup2

Totally agree ! i got a much better rate than that questionable code, even if you added in a tank of gas :thumbsup2

There were no restrictions. There were no identity requirements. I think you are being a bit dramatic. Once they sign the agreement, they are committed, as am I. Furthermore, should the scenario you suggested occur, it would go back on my insurance and my credit card coverage as usual. I never buy the insurance.

.....a week in a midsized car for $172.....
I currently have a full size for 9 days, early Dec, $168. I fully expect it to drop additionally as the weeks get closer. This past May, my 9 day, full size, got down to $121 by the time my trip started.

Credit card CDW wouldn't offer any protection since it requires you to decline the rental car companies CDW coverage. Since it was included in your rate, the CC won't provide any CDW coverage. You could go back to your regular auto insurance, but would have to pay any deductible and loss of use charges that usually are not covered in auto policies.

It should be noted that many people used the infamous Walmart contract ID code for many years after it was discontinued by Alamo. They just didn't take it out of their system. Checking in at the kiosk or online was easy and no one ever questioned the code. Didn't mean it was a legitimate code though.

Collision damage insurance; $20/day =$140. included
Tank of gas. return empty $45. included.
Airport surcharges and other tax. $5. per day= $35. included
Extra driver. $60 included.

It seems that these "extras" add up to more than my rental car. I am happy with the rate.

We get that. The posters between your initial post and here are trying to warn others - including the person who asked gmfor the questionable code - of the risks of using a discount code when one doesn't know the source or one's eligibility.

I could be wrong, but as far as I know no 'backup insurance' covers the daily loss of usage fee if a rental car needs accident repair.

Not knowing where or what this code is. Is this information according to some site you found this code on. People are great about saying this code is open to all BUT unless you work for XXXX or are affiliated with a certain association you can be asked for ID. The rate quoted is based on information YOU provide. Even if you sign the contract IF you have an accident and can't prove affiliation after the accident the contract was based on false information and does NOT have to be honored. If you mislead the car company on the contract or in order to get a quote the contract is void. I would never risk a code that offered full insurance unless I had an ID saying I was associated with that company. It is a huge risk... a gamble. Sure some people have no issues but you need to decide if you have an accident and the insurance company you are supposedly covered by using that code requests ID and you can't supply you could be out big money. There have been posts online about this. I wouldn't risk in a place like Orlando either where people decide to change lanes, turn in front of you, open car doors and dent and ding, etc.

Glad you got your rate and had no issues with it. Sounds like you were lucky. It is up to people to decide what they want to do.

A little research and I figured what this code is. I am not posting it but it is "not for everyone" as OP claims. It is very similar to one that is available for everyone but that one does not include all this extra OP got for free. It is up to people to determine if the want to use a code. If not sure if you are eligible call car company and ask...don't trust posters on boards who you don't know.

This code has been rejected at a few different locations. The included tank of gas was caught by the counter agent, and the renter was asked for ID. Just because you were able to use the code does not guarantee everyone will be able to slip by using it. If you do use it, you should have a back up. I have a fullsize car rented through Alamo for 10 days for $124 out the door using our costco membership and $40 off coupon through alamo, and I dont have to worry about anything.

I actually found that code on this board and it was originally posted on flyer talk. There were no membership requirements listed on the website when I procured the reservation. There were no identification requirements on the print out and they sent me a new confirmation the day before departure. Again, nothing required other than a drivers license and credit card. I always have a back up reservation at another agency and could have easily used it but it was not at such a good price. Everyone is free to make their own decisions. To consider a message board reliable is a risk we all take.
