I remember when we were going to the circus, someone told us that the souvenirs are super high priced and that I could buy them at a fraction of the cost either in the parking lot or online beforehand. As it turned out, that was definitely the case...and there was no way that I was buying an overpriced glow stick.
We got smarter when preparing for the 4th of July fireworks, where we knew that they would be selling glow sticks and things like that. Earlier in the week, my wife went to Five Below and bought more glow sticks than our kids could ever use....and the grand total was $5. They were GIVING them away to other kids and having the time of their lives.
That brings me to Disney World. I think the same thing applies. If you are strategic and don't mind packing a few extra things, you can pack items to give your kids along the way that will not only make them very happy, but also save you a lot of money. We found that big, colorful lollipop seemed like the ULTIMATE souvenir, and the kids never knew that we had brought it from home. It was just a "SURPRISE!" type of thing that my wife pulled out of her bag while we were walking in the park.
We still end up buying a souvenir here and there, but with some careful planning, we definitely save some money.
