A tip I haven't seen before

I used many tips on our last trip and found the lysol spray for germs and freshening the room and bathroom, and hangers to be the best tips. Linda

I don't leave home without my air freshener. If I fly, my first purchase when I arrive at my destination
is a can of lyesol (sp?). I spray every hard surface, the curtains, the carpet, the bedding, the shower curtain, etc. I think you get the idea.

Not to be picking on you, but this would be a MAJOR problem for most of my family if we stayed in this room after you. By spraying "air freshener" on everything, including fabrics, you are making those who follow you breathe those nasty chemicals.

I don't have a problem with people who feel the need to wipe down hard surfaces with Lysol wipes but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE realize that this is not your home and a fragrance you are happy to be surrounded by might well be one that the next guest finds offensive and/or irritating to their respiratory system.

I found mine in the local drug store, like Walgreens, Drug Fair etc. I bet they have them in some health food stores too,probabaly even walmart or target.

PS: they are bands you put on your wrist with a little nubbin on the inside of it to place over a pressure point in your wrist to stop motion sickness, used them when i was preganant.

When I was pregnant with my last daughter I was sooo sick for 7 months. My doctor prescribed the wrist bands for me to help with nausea. I can't really say if it helped or not, but I have a friends who swear by them.

I wipe down the toilet, then the toilet handle with Lysol wipes right off. I then do the sink and shower handles. I also wipe the remote control, phone, door handles, and restroom door handles.

I am not a clean freak really, it is just "home" for awhile and I want it to have the least amount of outside germs that it possibly can!

I clean the bathroom too! Dh always laughs at me but when the children were younger, they took sit down baths. I didn't want them sitting in the tub without me cleaning it first. Glad to hear I am not the only one who does this.
We also take a toothbrush holder. I get ours at the dollar store before every trip and then just throw it away. I don't want to put my toothbrush down on the counter or keep packing it up after every use.
I read somewhere to store up almost used up items like shampoo, lotion, etc. for trip, so you can use it all and then throw away the bottles at the hotel. Makes for more room on the way home, especially if you bought a bunch of souvenirs.

i do that all the time, when we go to vegas we just walk to cvs and get the cheap soap and stuff and just throw it away when we leave.

Second this one!! Please feel free to "scent" the room however you like while you are there, but not in ways that will leave the scents behind for others to experience - to some of us, it's as bad as getting a former smoking room!

I read these tip threads a million times just to make sure that I had everything I needed (and then some!!)
I was just in Disney in September ( I miss it already! )

I overpacked WAY too much! But these things I used:
tylenol!!!, air freshner
diaper rash cream (my kids are out of diapers!! but this helps with heat rash, etc)
sponges with detergent on them (I got this tip from another post: cut up a large sponge and drizzle liquid dish soap on it - not too much - and let it dry. Store them in a ziplock bag -these were invaluable for washing out the hotel mugs!)
ziplock bags of assorted sizes and supermarket bag(s)(millions of uses!), cloth diaper (for drying off tables and chairs, etc.)
dollar store ponchos (extra ones were used to put on seats of log flume rides and other rides just after rain)
small kit with: bandaids, neosporin, a few cut pieces of moleskin(the rest is in the hotel room), tylenol, chewable tylenol for kids
gum/mints
travel size suntan lotion, a small baggie with an extra pair of socks & underwear per child
misters/fans especially for kids
1 case of bottled water ( I brought more but didn't want to carry more than 2-3 bottles a day so 1 case would have been enough)
power strip (I was told there is only 1 outlet in a room - I was at the Coronado and they had more but I used the strip anyway
hand sanitizer (each kid had one in their fanny pack plus I had 2)
dollar store toiletries:toothbrushes, toothpaste, deoderant, body wash!!, shampoo, conditioner all throw-aways at the end of the trip
liquid soap!


these are things I brought but never used:
mole skin, bubbles to amuse kids, coffee(premeasured at home)with filters (never got to use them because we had the refillable mugs plus we werent in the room very often), single-use drink powders (cool idea but bottom line is when we were thirsty nobody wanted a sweet drink - only water)

LOL Mythbusters did this and proved it was Busted! Just a Myth the Match does nothing . Just thought it was funny. My SIL has Matches in her BR said in Germany they have nothing else ( at least when she was growing up )

Maybe it was 'busted' but I must say that the sulfer smell that the match has does something to the 'icky' smell in the bathroom better than air freshener. IMO.

Why does lighting a match get rid of "bathroom odors"?

This isn't the most pleasant topic, but questions relating to the bowels are usually worth answering. After all, if we can help prevent just one unnecessary odor, then we've done noses the world wide a great service.

The MadSci Network offers several theories about why matches neutralize odors. The site also notes that smell is subjective, meaning it's possible the "match effect" is in our heads. However, if you're willing to play along and assume a match really does work, there are a few possible reasons why.

When a match is struck, it produces sulfur dioxide, a "very pungent substance, to which the smell receptors are extremely sensitive." MadSci explains, "You can smell a minute amount of sulfur dioxide, but when you have done so, you will not smell anything else for a while." So, the match doesn't really get rid of the odor -- it just covers it up. This seems the most likely explanation, but MadSci presents a few other possibilities, including "oxidation of smelly substances in the flame" and "absorption of smelly substances onto the smoke."

The TV show "MythBusters" covered this topic and concluded that matches mask the methyl mercaptan found in flatulence and feces. So, a match may not eliminate odors, but it will push them to the background. Most of the time, that's good enough.
