A Tip for DVCers with small children

We two weeks ago we had our first trip home to VWL we had a 2 bedroom and got in late and didn't show our 5 year old all the rooms. She saw the bathrooms and the room her and her sister were sharing and the living room. We never showed her the master bedroom. At 2am I hear our 2 year old crying (over the baby monitor) so I go get her and bring her into the king bed with my DH and myself. At 4:30am I wake with start since I heard a man's voice coming over the baby monitor...I wake my DH and run out and see a CM with my daughter who was fully dressed in her dayclothes. It turns out that she woke up and couldn't find her sister, or either my DH or I so she figures we left for Mass without her so she gets dressed and leaves the room to find out where Mass is and after being out in the hallway for awhile she runs into a CM who gets her to tell him her last name and he brings her back. It turns out that she didn't realize there was a 3rd room....I thought we showed it to her...but I guess we weren't clear enough about it to her. So DVCers with small children make sure you show your children each room and tell them where everyone is sleeping so they can find you if needed. (WE even had light nights up over so I thought I thought of everything to make our nights go smoothly, but they always find the one thing you miss and I will never know why I didn't hear her on the monitor.)

Good Advice! Thank goodness a CM found your daughter and returned her safely! I can only imagine what could happen at OKW in this situation since each room exits directly outdoors.

In our first stay in a 1 BR at VWL last year, I kept getting confused, so I can certainly imagine how a child would have trouble in a 2 BR. From the BR, I'd walk into the closet instead of the bathroom, walk into the bath with the shower instead of the one with the jacuzzi, etc.

That's why one should always engage the slide lock.

We took our kids, 4 and 5 to see our new home models, the BCV, last week and asked them if they would feel comfortable sleeping in the 2nd bedroom or if they would prefer sleeping on the pull out in the Living Room. My son said he thinks until he is at least 7 he wants to be closer to us on the couch. (It was so cute, like 7 so was so far off). So even though we have enough points to reserve a 2 bedroom we plan on reserveing a 1 bedroom and saving some points for the next couple of years. I would prefer the 2 bedroom so I could put them to bed and be able to walk around the LR without having to worry about noise, but at least if I put them to bed in the LR I can walk around the Master bedroom without having to worry.

Just curious did you have a dedicated 2 bedroom or a lock-off? I was hoping that when we start reserving a 2 bedroom we could get a dediated and this might avoid some issues of walking out the wrong door in the middle of the night, although this wouldn't have helped in your situation since your daughter walked out the door on purpose.

I have seen inexpensive alarms that you can hang from your door knob, they sound an alarm if someone opens the door, from the inside or out!

We got the dedicated because I was worried about my younger one walking off. Never thought about my older one.

We also did use the slide lock, but my DD undid that and moved the chair that we put infront of the door....so she was just deturmaned to get out of the room.

The alarm is a good idea for our next trip.

OMG - that is so scary! I got confused as to where everything was a one bed at OKW, so I can understand a little one feeling totally lost.

Kids are amazing-- that she would figure out how to undo the slide lock and then move the chair in her quest to get out of the room! I'm glad this story ended well.

I also liked the "at least 7" story. Very sweet.
