A thought for the Day

The life given us by nature is short, but the memory of a life well spent is eternal.

Proverbs 2

Moral Benefits of Wisdom

1 My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands
within you,
2 turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to
understanding,
3 and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding,
4 and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden
treasure,
5 then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the
knowledge of God.
6 For the LORD gives wisdom, and from his mouth come
knowledge and understanding.

Know when to keep silent. Know when to speak up.--Life's Little Instruction Book

We must never forget that we may also find meaning in life even when confronted with a hopeless situation, when facing a fate that cannot be changed. For what then matters is to bear witness to the uniquely human potential at its best, which is to transform a personal tragedy into a triumph, to turn one's predicament into a human achievement.

Your attention

One of the most powerful things you have at your disposal is your attention. Whatever you focus your attention upon will grow stronger as a result.
Pay genuine attention to those you love, and the love between you will grow ever stronger. Pay full attention to the work you do and you'll be vastly more effective at it. Give your positive attention to the people and things around you, and you'll find yourself in ever-improving surroundings. Pay attention to the way your life is going, and it will begin moving in the direction you desire for it to move.

Attention is not always easy, because the world is filled with enticing distractions. Yet the very challenge of maintaining attention is what makes it so powerful, for when you commit to paying attention it draws out the best in you.

One of the most valuable things you can give to someone else is your attention. And one of the most effective ways to move your life and your world forward is by paying real attention to it.

Your attention will energize whatever you focus it upon. So direct it toward the best, the most positive and promising aspects of life, and great things will surely come about.

The light has gone out of our lives.... Yet I am wrong, for the light that shone in this country was no ordinary light.... and a thousand years later that light will still be seen in this country and the world will see it.... For that light represented the living truth.

Forget committees. New, noble, world-changing ideas always come from one person working alone.--Life's Little Instruction Book

You have it easily in your power to increase the sum total of this world's happiness now. How? By giving a few words of sincere appreciation to someone who is lonely or discouraged. Perhaps you will forget tomorrow the kind words you say today, but the recipient may cherish them over a lifetime.
~ Dale Carnegie

This religion and the Bible require of woman everything, and give her nothing. They ask her support and her love, and repay her with contempt and oppression.

Helen H. Gardener

It is often the fear of rejection which makes us afraid
to give of ourselves. The person who is reluctant to share
may be holding back because of this fear.
To share is to reveal who we are and where we are. If we
feel inadequate, we do not want to expose this imagined
inadequacy to other people.

If our self-image is too grand and inflated, we cannot
possibly live up to it in reality. Expecting ourselves to be
perfect sets us up for frustration and fear, since we know
deep down that we do not measure up to our image of
perfection.

With humility comes the willingness to give of what
we have and what we are right now, without waiting
until we are more eloquent or more accomplished. What
we have to share is what someone else needs to receive.
By focusing more on the needs of others and less on the
imaginary concept of ourselves, which is our ego, we
learn to overcome our fear of giving. What we have to
give now is enough for today.

May I not be afraid to give.

"All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players:
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts."

Understand that happiness is not based on possessions, power, or prestige, but on relationships with people you love and respect.--Life's Little Instruction Book

"In a time of drastic change it is the learners who inherit the future. The learned usually find themselves equipped to live in a world that no longer exists."

A good thought indeed, DD. Thanks.

Shine brightly

A light that shines brightly is certain to be seen by all who come within its radiance. In the same way, a life that is lived with passion, with purpose, with integrity is sure to have an influence upon all who are touched by it.
The most powerful way to influence others is not with threats or arguments or tricks or deception, but with the way you live your life. If you want someone to truly understand your point of view, then express that point of view in a living and dynamic way, and you will indeed make it difficult to deny.

Argument and persuasion at the very best can only get others to reluctantly do what they did not originally want to do, or to admit what they did not want to believe. Yet setting a positive example by the way you live can bring others to truly and willingly change what they desire or what they believe.

In order to positively influence others, it is essential that you first positively influence yourself. Whatever you desire to promote, promote it first to a position of undeniable importance in your own life. Who you are and what you do will always speak far more convincingly than the words you have to say. Let your life do the speaking, and the message will come through loud and clear.

-- Ralph Marston

President Lincoln had a good way with words......

It is the duty of nations as well as of men to own their dependence upon the overruling power of God; to confess their sins and transgressions in humble sorrow, yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon; and to recognize the sublime truth, announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations are blessed whose God is the Lord.

We know that by His divine law, nations, like individuals, are subjected to punishments and chastisements in this world. May we not justly fear that the awful calamity of civil war which now desolates the land may be a punishment inflicted upon us for our presumptuous sins, to the needful end of our national reformation as a whole people?

We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of heaven; we have been preserved these many years in peace and prosperity; we have grown in numbers, wealth and power as no other nation has ever grown.

But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us, and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us.

It has seemed to me fit and proper that God should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged, as with one heart and one voice, by the whole American people. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November as a day of Thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father Who dwelleth in the heavens.

--Abraham Lincoln's Thanksgiving Proclamation October 3, 1863
