Did you mail your taxes before today (April 15th), Today, Filed an extension, have no clue, or do not pay taxes in the US???

Just a question for today...

Me, My office handed me a few things that they "forgot" yesterday, so I will have to file an extension and redo them...grrr

MeanLaureen, Is this a good poll for the day?

Great poll for today. My DH just got back from the post office - so we filed today. I have absolutely no idea why we did this as they have been done for a few weeks now and we will be getting money back. We tend to be a little bit bad in the procrastination department. Our WDW vacation took precedence to filing.

We filed our Federal taxes early since we are getting a refund. State taxes are not due for another 30 days, and I am not giving my crooked state any more money to squander before I absolutely have to!!!

I should be receiving my refund tomorrow...thank goodness!!

Good question, Ohana! DH did ours last night on TurboTax and was so excited about our refund, until he did the state return, which eats up more than half of our refund because we have to pay! It will go in the mail tonight after he looks it over one more time. It is tradition in this family to drive to the main post office between 8 pm and midnight on April 15.

A cute, true story: One year in Nashville, all of the postal workers who were outside directing traffic and collecting last minutes payments were dressed in tuxedos and formalwear! It was a riot!

I have a question. Is it true you don't have to file an extention if you are getting a refund? Thank you.

When you're due a refund (like me :) ) why wouldn't you do it early!! We usually do them in early February, but got some forms late this year so we did them mid-March :)

Before anyone suggest it's stupid to let the gov't borrow our money and we should adjust our withholding....we've done that already....our little family of 4 claims 9 dependents and aren't comfy claiming more that that....and most of the refund was due to changes in the tax code....

Not an accountant here, but I always thought April 15 was the deadline to file, no matter whether you owed or were getting a refund. It is also the deadline to pay if you owe anything....

You still have to send in an approximate amount if you owe but file an extension....it's an extension to file, not to pay....at least that's what I always understood :)

Question...if you're owed a refund, why would you wait? Or is it just purely procrastination (I can relate to that! just not about money...)

wishuponastarforever, unfortunately you do have to file for an extension. My taxes were about to be sent out yesterday (I have a healthy refund coming) when my fathers life insurance agent let me know that he would not have info I needed until next week. They changed a law that deals with how his life insurance is handled, so I have to wait to file until I have this split dollar info...
Yuck, I really wanted to spend that money...

pay mine biweekly...
received income tax refund in March..most of it is gone..:o
don't need to file a extension if you're getting a refund...
they'll keep your money as long as you want..
People at work have filled out taxes to get refunds from years past..I get my money ASAP..::yes::

It's procrastination and also health issues were a factor on my DH part. He insists we don't have to file by tonight if it's a refund.

I don't want to find out the hard way if he is incorrect.

He is home working on them now but I don't want him to have a false sense of security about the deadline.

Ohanafamily - this is a great post.
Thank you.

At my house the problem is not getting them done (we did that in late jan) but xeroxing them and mailing them (which got done in oh mid march)

I liked doing taxes this year better than 2 years ago when I got killed for staying a Utah resident after doing the college program- Usually you can substitute the state you lived in's state tax for Utah but alas Florida doesnt have state tax.. That was a good 500 chunk of change to stay a resident... (but yes cheaper than paying out of state tuition)

I don't know personally, I am not a CPA, but MY CPA is filing an extension for me, and they owe me several thousand dollars...
