I am moving in to a three story apartment. The first floor is a large sunroom with a sitting room all connected with open doorways. Nice. The second floor has one bedroom (we converted to an office/laundry room) a full bathroom and a largish open room with a kitchen and extra space. The third floor is three bedrooms and a bath. There are only three of us so I don't foresee needing lots of dining space. I want to put a dinette set in but because of the layout I see people hanging out on this floor alot. I also want to put in a sofa. My young adult son is making faces, saying it will look odd and cluttered. There room is long and rectangular with a wall of three windows. I could put the sofa there but I do still want lots of airflow. The television and entertainment stuff will be going on the first floor where the sunroom is. Any tips?

Is there enough room, that instead of a sofa you could put in one of those high standing bar tables with a couple of taller chairs. Make it more of a place to sit and chit chat with the person(s) in the kitchen, but not somewhere to settle in for the evening, like a sofa would invite me to do.

I get the look your going for. My friend has one in her kitchen/eating area, but it has a double sided fireplace and on the blue prints, it's called a hearth room. The floor model they looked at, was set up with a love seat in that area.

there's plenty of room. I hate those high standing chairs. They always make my legs feel like they're falling asleep or I"m going to fall. I don't care if it is used as a place to snuggle up and read a book. One of the issues is the first floor does not have a bathroom. I'm not sure how long people will want to hang there at night because of this. But I don't really want to put a tv on the second floor. That feels like it would be going to far. I am considering some type of window seat if dh feels handy to create something.

LOL. I am right there with you on hating them personally. People with short legs and those tall chairs are not a good mix. But some people really do like them.

If you have the room, go for it. Maybe a love seat instead of a full sized sofa. Maybe, a bigger chair or lounger type of seat.

For what it's worth, I used to live in Italy, and there it is very common for households to have a sofa, or at least a loveseat in the kithcen.

I was at a friend's house today and she has a sofa in her kitchen - first time I ever saw that. Wow! I thought - looked pretty cool. If you're going to sit down with a cookbook and a glass of wine while you're waiting for a pot to boil, you could do a lot worse.

I'm confused. Will this leave you without any "traditional" dining table/chairs?

If there's room for small dining table/chairs and sofa, I say go for it! If not, maybe do a dining table with comfy upholstered armchairs to invite people to sit?

There's room. Really I could make it into a kitchen, dining and living room all together. But I will have a living room downstairs.

Well, if I had that kind of space, I'd have a sofa, too! :thumbsup2 Kicking back on a comfy sofa while waiting for something to come to a boil is my kinda cooking!

I would if there was room. Sounds like it will be the main living area. Or you could get a couple nice armchairs and put a table between them.

We have a large island with four barstools in our kitchen. We also have a love seat. It is everyone's favorite place to sit in the kitchen. DH does almost all the cooking and I get to sit and relax with a glass of wine. Even the kids hang out with us on the couch.
