A Rolex Vacation on a Timex Budget: Sept '11 PTR (TR is Live!)

Same thing here! I have to beg to have my picture taken! Not that I am vain or anything, but I seriously want a few pictures to prove I accompanied my family on vacation!

How do you feel about photopass? Do you have the advance purchase link?

http://www.disneyphotopass.com/previsitoffer.aspx

The last 3 trips I have pre-ordered the photopass card ($99), allowing us to get lots of family photos, and some shots of just the kids and just my husband and me. And sometimes, just me, when I encounter a photographer during "solo" time.

Better still, I have split the photopass cost with friends or family members who have gone around the same time as my trip. Wonder if there is anyone on the BC board with a trip around yours that you would trust to split the cost.

As far as cameras go, I don't have a fancy camera, so I don't know what to tell you about stashing yours in a locker. I just use my Canon point and shoot, but I love that it is rated for water use, so I take it EVERYWHERE. It doesn't leave my wrist in the parks!

I can't really help either, with the camera situation, I just use a little point and shoot that comes with me wherever I go! I think if it were me, I wouldn't want to risk losing that camera, but the idea of getting great pictures is tempting!:)

LOL...my DH doesn't take pictures of me either! Every time I want a picture of me in Disney, I have to ask him to take it, then I feel stupid, like I'm forcing him to do it! And I take soooo many of him! I don't get it! :rotfl:

However, lol at DH taking pictures of everything else but you! Maybe you should park yourself in front of one of the shots and say right 'I'm ready, shoot!' :lmao:

You would have laughed, I was trying to be 'subtle' and handed him the camera after taking his picture. "Do you want to take any pictures?" He just shook his head: "nope, not right now"....argh!:lmao:

I'm glad you mentioned that they take solo photos. The main reason I was hesitant about ordering the PhotoPass is because it's just the two of us. Wasn't sure we'd get the same amount of attention if we weren't travelling with children. I do act like a child though, maybe they will count that!

I'm going to check out that link now! :thumbsup2

I always feel like I'm a diva when I ask him to take my picture, but really, would one or two hurt? I may have an advantage in Disney, if I chase down Stitch, Mickey, etc... then he will HAVE to take my picture. That or he can chase down a Photopass photog and make them do it. Sounds like I win either way! :)

I think we have to whip these men into shape! That is my goal over the small summer trips we're taking. Convince my DH to take my picture.... we'll see.....:goodvibes

I have a very nice digital SLR camera and am not planning on bringing with. I just don't want to risk losing/ruining something so expense, nor do I want to feel like I'm "babysitting" it the whole time. But being to used to the quality of my camera, I'm not sure I'd be completely happy with just a point and shoot for the whole trip. I am planning on ordering the photopass cd deal before we leave. I think that way I'll have the best of both options.

We don't really do character meet and greets, but I'm pretty sure there is usually a photographer there to take pictures when peopel are meeting characters.

I have to say that it is not just me that my DH reluctantly photographs. I sent him with my camera when he took my youngest son to HS while I stayed behind with my older son who was not feeling well. My son was chosen for Jedi Training (he did take pictures of that) but afterwards, Ben was invited to have his picture taken with Darth, Storm Troopers and the Jedis who run the show. My DH took ONE picture. It is a really good one, but the characters could not believe it when he told them. "All set. I got it!"

Ok, I'm in on the Fun Pig guess!

My guess is $123.17 (sorry I'm weird & have to guess down to the last penny! :lmao: :lmao: )

Sorry you lost Tamu Tamu, but it sounds like you're really excited about your other options!!!! Also, the private fireworks at GF sounds amazing!!! I am yet to visit that resort, but definitely will at some point (hopefully for Christmas one year!)

I'm not 100% sure about the events planning, but an acquaintance of mine actually works in that area at Disney. We aren't close friends, only acquaintances, so I don't know everything about it, but I do know that there are event planners at all of the resorts not just the Deluxe. However, I do believe that all of the planners, no matter where their "home base" is located, are able to plan for any of the 4 parks. Just wanted to add that because I noticed a few different people asking you about the planners! :-) I hope that helps even though I'm not sure of the exact details!

About the camera -- honestly I don't know what to say! I have a Canon Xsi which is an entry-level DSLR with a $350 lens! Because my camera & lens cost so much, I am very nervous about taking them to Disney. But I am definitely taking it!!! I basically carry my camera around with me 24/7. I don't ever leave it in the room at the resort nor do I put it in a locker. So I can't really advise you with either of those. I do know there's no way my camera would ever fit into one of those tiny safes at the resort! And I would feel safer having it with me. But, on the other hand, because I carry it around all the time, I do have to worry about it getting dropped or falling off a table at a restaurant or something along those lines. I know what you mean about "babysitting" the camera the entire trip! I am a photographer (as a hobby not a career!) and I think there are soooo many great shots you can get at the parks & resorts!!! I know there's no way I'd ever do it, but there's honestly a huge part of me that just wants to go without a camera! We usually go to each park 2 days -- so one day with a camera & one day without! I think it would be a different perspective to experience the parks without taking pics every 3 seconds! :lmao: Last year, I came home with 4 memory cards full and over 4,000 pictures (plus what the PhotoPass photogs took at the parks & at our Photopass Portrait Session!)

I can't wait to hear more about your trip & find out what location replaced Tamu Tamu!!!! :)

I agree with photographymom... my experience has been this: I am in fact a photographer professionally, and as a result have a lot of expensive equipment - however, I am actually insured. Therefore, in the event of loss, theft or damage... I can replace my equip. Ive brought several (Canon of course!) DSLR camera bodies and lenses with me in the past. Ive left them in a small camera bag with a lock and had no problems in the room. They are a little bit heavier (and you cant exactly rock the water rides) but I find that when I DONT have it, I regret it and end up seeing all the shots I WISH I could take, but cant. On days that are outrageously hot or I know we'll be going on water rides, the camera gets locked in the bag and ill snap a few pics with my phone or small point and shoot, and be fine.

I think it comes down to what you'll want more in the long run. I dont mind lugging a big camera - because I LOVE seeing and catching things no one else does, and then coming home and editing through them. The pros outweigh the cons (says the girl with no children, diaperbag, carriage, etc. This could change when I have kids!!) But, if you're fine with a low risk point and shoot camera - bring that and work it out with no worries. Either way, just make sure you're having the most fun possible.

Grouchy today. No word back from Events. I *know* it takes time to get all the contracts worked out, but I want to share all the details NOW.:lmao:

*whines*

I can be a big baby when I want to.....

Thank you all with your responses re: Cameras. I will be responding in kind a bit later today, once I get myself out of this funk.

Quitting sodas again might have something to do with it.:surfweb:

Lol, am sure someone will get back. If not why don't you try ringing? I always continuously bug people when they are not responding and in the end they hurry just so they can get rid of me!! :rotfl2:

:goodvibes I am soooo glad you found my PTR, because I am LOVING yours!!! You are too funny and you guys are too cute!! I am glad you are planning an all out trip to Disney in honor of your dad...very sweet :cutie:

That's a very good point. I think I will probably pre-order the photopass CD, as I believe you can be refunded if you don't want any of the pictures they take (or if they don't take any!)

I will also bring a small point and shoot camera (Cannon ELPH) that I am less worried about losing.

I'm still thinking we will bring at least one of our DSLRs, reason why later in this post. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and ideas!

We don't really do character meet and greets, but I'm pretty sure there is usually a photographer there to take pictures when peopel are meeting characters.

I have never experienced the "meet and greets" before at WDW. The last time I was there in '98 things were much more free for all. It was something of a game to hunt down Tigger in the parks. (Or at the time, Meeko... I was rather in love with that Racoon!:lmao:)

I have to say that it is not just me that my DH reluctantly photographs. I sent him with my camera when he took my youngest son to HS while I stayed behind with my older son who was not feeling well. My DH response when I brought this up to him. "Why do you need 20 shots of the same people?" They don't understand the whole: what if someone's eyes are closed/mouth open/bad face / fat side: argument :rolleyes1

Yay! Entering your guess in, expect to turn him in next week...I for one am hoping he comes in on the high end! :) BTW, that is not weird at all... I have one the "how many jelly beans" competition time and time again for doing just that!:cool1:

Thank you! That is a very good bit of information to share! I think some of the resorts have more "convention" focused planners, and others are very good w/ Private Dining. From what I've heard out there, it's somewhat luck of the draw. Besides the loooooooong wait time for a response (!!!!) the two women I am working with at YC are amazing. :hippie:

Before I inherited my dad's D70, I had a Cannon Rebel XT which we've used for about 4 years now. Love that camera...but love this Nikon even more. We're not getting rid of the Cannon by any means, too many lenses have been purchased for it.

I was thinking the same thing about the safe... even taking the lense off the camera.... probably still wouldnt' fit in there! I have considered getting a locking case for multiple lenses / bodies, but we'll see.

That is a GREAT idea about the on/off day at the parks! We are going to have 2 days each at MK and Epcot... so I think I am going to take your advice on that one. One day SLR, one day point and shoot. :thumbsup2

I can't wait to see how many pictures we come back with from our 9 day trip.... I'm actually scared!:scared1:

However, my father left me about 400GB worth of memory cards... so I think we're covered. :cutie:

I didn't think about the insurance, all our other cameras/lenses are covered under our homeowners policy. I need to add this one as well! I've seen the larger locking cases in the past, but they are all hardshell/case style. Do they make good ones in the softshell backpack fabric that you could suggest?

I'm with you on the weight issue, but last weekend my DH was wonderful carrying the camera case, I flitted around with the camera while he sipped wine in the tasting room. Have to figure out a way to make that work in Epcot....I'm thinking tequila bar. :rotfl:

We don't have any little ones either. Perhaps I should take advantage of the fact I can carry around a camera bag before I'm lugging the diaper bag through the parks!:lmao:

:dance3::dance3::dance3:

Thank you all so much for your suggestions, I think we'll be travelling with two cameras AND the photopass option in our back pocket.

If there isn't a picture of me after THIS trip, I give up!:snooty:

Lol, am sure someone will get back. If not why don't you try ringing? I always continuously bug people when they are not responding and in the end they hurry just so they can get rid of me!! :rotfl2:

Mainly because I'm afraid I'm going to overstep my "annoying client" boundaries and then they won't do all the nice little extras we've been talking about.

It's like how you are hesitant to send something back to the kitchen when it's not just right. (Mainly at chain resaurants.... where the waitstaff is mostly 18-22 and they grew up watching Fight Club....):scared1:

I'm giving them until tomorrow, then I'm calling!:wizard:

Awwww, thank you! Glad you're following along and enjoying it! I have to say your PTR title was perfect, and exactly what drew me in!:goodvibes

Oh no! I hope you're day is going a little bit better now! :goodvibes I had a pretty horrible week at work, but when I get home and have dinner and catch up on the DIS it gets a little better!

I'm extra annoyed this week, because my husband works nights, 2:30-11, so I only see him on the weekend. This week, he was supposed to work days all week, til 4, so I was excited, and then this week, they switch it on him and make him work nights all freakin week. The ONLY good thing about that is, he gets paid double time for today and tomorrow, since they are technically holidays, which means more money for Disney! :dance3:

I hope the Disney event people call you back, but from how you've been describing it, it seems like they take their sweet time getting back to people! Don't worry, I'm sure they are just working extra hard to get everything perfect for you!

I think we have to whip these men into shape! That is my goal over the small summer trips we're taking. Convince my DH to take my picture.... we'll see.....

That's a great idea! Our 1 year wedding anniversary is next weekend, so we're going to Boston for a little weekend trip, so I'm going to bring the camera and force him to take a few pics of me! :rotfl:

So, this evening is going in a much better direction than this morning and day did!

Just got an email.....

"I will contact the chef tomorrow to bounce these ideas off of him. I spoke to our pastry chef today and sent him your pictures – they are going to get back to us on cost. xxxx and I have an appointment to tour the “mystery” space at Animal Kingdom tomorrow to see if it is a good fit, so we will let you know all about it!"

More to come later after dinner when I sit down to update some other goings-ons (MORE PINS!)....but it looks like we're making progress on the event! :goodvibes

While this is completely off-topic, I thought I'd share some pics from last weekend down in Charlottesville, VA. This is why I really want to bring the D70 with us on our trip.... I wasn't even getting creative with the exposure, etc. (Just had everything set to "auto" ) and we STILL got some amazing shots:

Barboursville Ruins:

I may not have been on the trip, but the horses were! (and boy do they look thrilled to be there! :lmao:):

Luca (the winemaker at Barboursville) and Allesandro (he runs Palladio, the restaurant at the winery) both telling me to behave. Or, more likely, just being Italian:

(In reality, Luca allowed me to take home a wine that was "not for sale" then decided to give me a hard time about it. It's nice having friends who make AMAZING wines...and share them! :goodvibes )

This picture really isn't done justice in a lo-res copy, but that's all I can upload. Random girl in green dress with happy puppy (at Veritas Vineyards):

Booooooo to your husband's job, not allowing him to be home this week! :headache: But, you are very good looking at the bright side of things. I try to do that whenever my job gets frustrating. "At least I am getting paid, which means I can take vacation and go to Disney.":lovestruc

Yes! Sounds like you're going to have a fun trip! I love Boston, though it's been a few years since I was up there. A very good friend of mine used to live in Stowe, which is about 25-30 minutes outside of the city, near Concord. I adored autumn up there.... but spring... brrr!

Joining in! I've only made it to Post 6 so far. So sorry aobut your dad, but what a fairytale romance you have!

I was going to comment on your ADRs (better late than never.)
Ok, the ADRs are locked in! So here's the final list, how do you think we did?

San Angel Inn Dinner

Cinderella's Royal Table Breakfast

Le Cellier Steakhouse Dinner

Tutto Italia Ristorante Lunch

Jiko - The Cooking Place Dinner

Victoria & Albert's V & A's Dinner Queen Victoria Room

Yachtsman Steakhouse Dinner

Bistro de Paris Dinner

Biergarten Restaurant Lunch

Rose & Crown Pub & Dining Room Dinner

The Hollywood Brown Derby Lunch

'Ohana Dinner

:confused3
They sound great. We have done the following:
LeCellier - not worth all the hype (and the wait - we waited over 30 minutes past our ADR time)
Tutto Italia - good and fun environment
Jiko - my DH's birthday dinner last Sept. We really enjoyed this. I read something about one of the walls changing during dinner, but we totally didn't notice that. The food was exceptional, as was the service.
Rose & Crown - haven't been for dinner but sure love the bar, the scene, the bartenders and the cocktails!
Brown Derby - awesome - we did it as part of the Fantasmic package. Not a bad choice on the menu.
'Ohana - I loved this. Of course I love pineapple. And meat. And the Lapu Lapu I got at Tambu Lounge before dinner probably helped my enjoyment.

We went in August '08 (crowded, but manageable) and Sept 15-20something in '10 (amazing with no crowds whatsoever). You will really enjoy your trip!

Can't wait to catch up and read more.

So, if this is going to be a “Rolex” vacation, it had better go all out (but, you know, stay classy). But not in a “stay classy” while wearing jorts kind of way, mind you….:snooty::lmao:

So, I need something else to obsess over now.

I’m currently debating the following:
- Have custom cake designed for Anniversary dinner.
- Go for a Fireworks Cruise
- Go on a backstage tour

Anyone thy any of these, or would recommend one over the other?
Again, sorry to be so far behind. We went on the Keys to the Kingdom tour in '08 and it was priceless. I highly recommend it! Can't wait to see what you decide!

A fortune cookie made me cry today.

Quite literally, actually. I finished my favorite shrimp dish from a great takeout place near my office, and of course I cracked open the little cookie and pulled out the fortune. Outside of the lucky lottery numbers (why is 42 always there, I wonder….. :lmao:) and how to say peach in Chinese, I read the following:

"You are a filial, kind, and trustworthy.”

Uh, what?

I cannot believe I am saying this, having been an English major at one time of my life, but I Googled “filial.” Then I found this:

“In Confucian ideals, filial piety (Chinese: 孝; pinyin: xiào) is one of the virtues to be held above all else: a respect for the parents and ancestors.”

I should preface it by saying I do believe in signs, and I felt so strongly that somehow my dad was checking up on me. I’ve been feeling like I haven’t taken care of things with the family terribly well lately. (I’m an only child and my parents were divorced, so the full responsibility of dealing with his estate, taxes, etc falls to me.) I guess he was telling me that he wasn’t disappointed in what I’ve done so far.

I have to believe that.

So, I’m crying. From a fortune cookie.

And you know what? I’m willing to cry again if it means he’s out there watching!:lovestruc

He’s always been my hero, afterall:

Love this. You have me with a tear in my eye! Something about that daddy-daughter connection. My daughter is an only child. And I'm divorced (and remarried). I never quite thought about what would happen if something were to happen to her birth father. Ahh regardless, there's much more to the story, but that's more for my PTR than for yours.

And I want to mention that I love your writing - degreed or not. And I think you should follow up on that author/historian dream you have. What about a historian focused on Disney? I have a real respect for those who can write well. I'm a stickler for grammar. So I love reading your writings!
