A request for courtesy in Base Camps

Next weekend, the judging will start for the Expedition Everest ride competition. A lot of people across VMK have worked hard on their ride rooms and, as part of the rules, have to keep their Base Camp manned for a total of 50 hours this weekend. Our team has 13 people so we should be able to cover the time, but for those who have only 6 people on their team, they are going to be stretched pretty thin.

The last thing any of us want is for a team to be disqualified because the team member watching over base camp got disconnected just at the moment a staff member showed up to judge them.

This is where the request comes in. What with lots of people going through the room, a ride operating in it and at least two teleporters working (one into the room, one out) those little base camp rooms are going to pushing their nano limits. (or whatever. I can use a computer, but I have no idea how it actually works. LOL)

And while I know that you are all going to be extremely excited about your new bat magic pins this weekend, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not use them or any other magic in the base camps. What seems like a simple magic trick to you could be the extra bit of byte to trigger a wave of dc's in the room.

Thank you in advance.

Thank you so much for posting this.

Besides magic, dancing in a room can also trigger disconnects. I really
feel for those teams of 6. Our team is large enough to have two team
members cover the base camp at any time, but I worry that both members
can still dc at the same time.

I wonder if it would be a good idea to have teammates take turns logging
off and on to keep the auto-disconnect timer from zapping?

Perhaps this should be addressed to VMK. I think it would be a good idea
to mention the auto-disconnects might cause problems during judging
to the Contact Us on the VMK home page.

Good idea briar i will fire off a letter shortly as i believe the same thing this will be difficult to keep a room manned if ppl are getting dc all at the same time . so im with you on this i will make sure i send in my share of the letter contribution :)

What I planned to do in my time manning our base camp- was to log on just before my time- then about 15 minutes into it log in another me (one of my mules) and have her play in another room should she be needed she can enter when I dc until I can log back on- then when she is done being a seat filler I can re log her in as well- so at all times I will have someone on

Hopefully between that and our two member team could log on at slightly different times...

But I do agree with some courtesy- from riders too- magic, dancing, and excessive chatter affect people all differently. And just because it isn't a problem for one doesn't mean it doesn't affect others- I know a few people that if magic is done they crash in any room, others I know have been in rooms with everyone doing as much magic as possible and no problems- but usually in cases like rides, games, etc- it is just polite.

Good post Simba- I do wish VMK would put something out about it too- but sigh- I don't expect that

while agree that Dc'ing will be a HUGE problem this weekend, I dont thing Magic or dancing has anything to do with it. It is that stupid "time out" script that runs every 30-45 minutes or so. Doing magic, in a room that is crowded slows the room down because people have a harder time clicking and then people do their magic and its a chain reaction. I think the Hosts ask you not to do magic for the same reason they ask you to remove your hats. Thats just my oppinion, but the 'time out; script is the big killer here.

Yes, I am very worried about this problem. Our team is a small one - only 8 people. We all KNOW that disconnections every 30-45 minutes is a fact of VMK life. Unfortunately, because our team is so small, only one person at a time is scheduled to be in base camp throughout the weekend. And we all know too that sometimes it can take 15-30 minutes (or even longer!) just to log back in if VMK is experiencing problems, which, of course, will happen this weekend with all the rides running.

The mule idea is a good one, but most of my team members do not have the ability to log in two people at once without crashing both of them.

thanks for posting...also I think it is too bad we can not be granted booting rights inthe rooms temporarily for this event.

I saw alot if VMKers this week-end blocking the way to rides just because they thought it was cool.

Even had a run in with one that said he was not moving and no one could make him and VMK would do nothing about it! SO BLAH

He got reported and entered the ride shortly after I sent the report...I do not know what happened on his end, whether he got a warning or not.

That's definitely why I try to have more than one entry point on my rides.:)
Now if we could just get those ppl from holding up the game on pirates.....;)
