About 14 months ago I posted on the DIS asking if anyone had any suggestions of ways that I could save money and make a coworkers WISH trip to WDW extra special.

A former coworker of mine named Stephanie was dying of cancer and her final wish was to take her 3 children to WDW. Her family had tried to raise money but was only able to raise a small
amount. We had a jar here at work but had only raised a small amount as well. One day we received news that Stephanie didn't have much more time and were told how far away they were from their goal of making it to the World. Here at work we began researching some options and stepped up our fundraising.

I knew that someone on the DIS would have some good suggestions on foundations that might be able to help Stephanie.

What happened then on the DIS amazed me and rendered me somewhat speechless. Amazing, wonderful, generous people pulled together to raise money, collect goodies, order groceries, arrange for transportation, get hotel upgrades, pay for character meals, pay for hotel rooms and donate their DVC points, all to make a total strangers last wish of enjoying the magic and wonder that Walt Disney World has to offer, possible.

So, one year ago on this Monday, a limousine picked up Stephanie, her parents and her three beautiful children and they were on their way to the land of magic. And magical it was. They stayed at Old Key West were they quickly stated "now we know how the rich people live". :) They also spent a few wonderful nights on the Concierge level of Animal Kingdom Lodge. There was no shortage of Pixie Dust on this vacation and I will probably never know how most of it managed to sprinkle itself on this family.

They were surprised with special packages, flowers, character meetings and even a visit by the Mayor of WDW along with a musical serenade at breakfast by the WDW band.

When I visited Stephanie in her final days of life, she had a twinkle in her eyes reliving the stories and memories of that trip. She said it was the most amazing thing she had ever seen, she had no idea it would be as wonderful as it was.

The power of the DIS is a magnificent thing. Don't forget that. Despite of all the little things that go on here, this is a magical place, full of amazing people. Whether you offered money, suggestions, kind words or a prayer, your caring and kindness was felt all the around the country, to a loving little family in Minnesota.

What a wonderful story...kleenex please.

I am so happy she had a wonderful time at the happiest place on earth!

My SIL passed away from cancer last year. The year before she got to back home (Cinderella's castle). It made her feel wonderful to see it again.

It is a magical place.
Thanks for sharing the story.

Tamie, has it really been a year already? Wow. Stephanie touched the hearts of so many of us here - her legacy, her spirit, is not only with her children and family, but with us, as well.

Thanks for sharing this story, and reminding us what a wonderful gift we have here at the DIS.

What a wonderful story Tamie. I am lucky to have found this place. What a wonderful group of people here. I'm glad I found you all!

Tamie--I was just thinking that it was almost a year ago.

Thanks for posting this. It really was truly amazing, wasn't it?

Now, I'm off to find a tissue. :sniff:

What an experience it was to watch that trip come together with all the help of so many DISers!!! Truly a magical happening!!!

Thanks for sharing the pics and memories once again, Tykes!:D

Thanks, Tamie, for sharing one of the many magic monents here on the DIS, a special place indeed it it. A wonderful story, gave me some tears, again. So glad Stephanie and her family were able to share in the Magic prior to her passing, memories her family will forever hold close, and a moment of joy for Stephanie. Thanks, Tamie.

Thank you Tamie :) I can't believe it's been a year already. The DIS is full of some wonderful people and it was truly special to watch this unfold as it did last year. And even more so to know how much joy it brought to the family. Thanks again for posting this :)

Such a wonderful story. You, Tamie, are a magical and wonderful person for getting the ball rolling on this.:D

What a beautiful story; I only wish I had found these boards sooner so I could have helped in some way. What an amazing bunch of people-I'm glad I found ya'll.

Wow, as others have said, I can't believe it has been a year already. Seems like only yesterday, you were posting relaying what you had received for Stephanie and her family. :( Do you ever hear how her husband and children are doing?

WOW! How cool was that! I must admit - the story of DISsers generousity and support doesn't surprise me. It is a really nice group of folks.

I bet Stephanie is still smiling about that trip up in heaven!

I am another that can't believe it has been a year. I remember the planning, the generosity, the minions of DIS angels who gave generously. It was an incredible thing to watch and be part of of.

It does my heart good to see the pictures and know the magic that fell on that wonderful family and the beautiful memories that her children will have.

Thank you again, Tamie (and Deb and Diane) for allowing us to be a part of such a special project.
Cathy

Stephanie was real lucky to have you for a friend, Tamie.:) I hope her family is doing well. :)

I was just thinking about Stephanie's kids the other day. Have you heard how they are doing?

I am so glad that Stephanie and her family were able to have such a magical trip with so many special memories. I'm sure the memories will always be treasured by her family. The DIS truly is a special place with such a generous, selfless group of people as members. I count myself blessed to be a part of our community.

I believe Tamie is on vacation, and will be returning Wednesday....I'm sure she can answer this.

It is truely hard to believe that was a year ago.

Isn't odd how life works.....Each of us have experienced 364 more days....for the most of us....we have had to contend with life's daily drama's of parking spaces, making a child's lunch, following the news ..... and largely our lives have remained unchanged.

Yet here is a very personal story of one Mother who lost her very personal battle to experience all of those same things.

And yet, I think in many real ways....Stephaine 'won the war'.....while nothing can replace a mother's precence in the lives of her children.....Stephaine's pain and anguish served as a unifing purpose...that drew very many of those involved in what was done together.

Even in her death....One of Stephaine's legacies shall always be how she helped all who was involved in their trip to better understand their own humanity.

I pray that she rests in peace, and that God's loving precence be felt as strongly in the hearts and souls of her children....as it was in all of our hearts.
