A relaxing swim?

I can definitely understand people doing the pool especially it you don't have access at home. Luckily we have access to a pool pretty regularly here at home (in-laws have a pool and they live a mile away). I think I really just hate de-pooling. I think I would enjoying it more without the kiddos (no offense) lol!

It depends on the time of year too. If really hot and humid, sometimes that mid-day dunking at the pool feels really good and refreshing.

^ This is us. Granted it's a lot of work, but we don't have a pool at home so it's a treat for us, especially on a hot day. However on the flip side, we stayed at Kidani in November and were housed in the very farthest section away from the lobby...it literally took us 5 FULL minutes to walk from our room to the lobby!!! We didn't swim then because of the distance even though we brought our suits and would've swam if we were closer to the pool. Pretty disappointing, actually.

We don't swim so much as lounge in the pool and cool off. We didn't do it every day, but it was a nice change of pace for us.

My DH loves to swim, and he did a few laps maybe, but I seriously barely swim a stroke, I just enjoy being in the water and feeling cooler. We can only travel in August, so it's pretty hot then!

I'm also happy to have a lie down and let DH head to the pool on his own if necessary!

I should add, swimming pools are very expensive where we live (the local council sold them off, so they're privately run and profit driven, unlike my hometown where the council still run them and they're much cheaper to visit!), so we don't go as often as we might like. Being able to visit one every day (multiple times) if we want is a good novelty for us!

My kids are older (12, 13, 15 and 17) so we will swim a lot while we are there next week. We swim a lot at home and they enjoy it. However, when they were young...forget it. We didn't swim at all. To much chaos, too exhausting, too much work for mama.

I'm with you. I don't understand how it is relaxing to drag everyone out of a park, wait for a bus, go back to a room and change, swim, then do everything in reverse. I would much rather stay the extra hour or two in a park and then leave for the day. Maybe swim later or maybe not, but even then I don't have the hassle of getting everyone ready AGAIN to go back out.

Mini rant alert.....Ok, so am I the only one who doesn't find swimming relaxing? It seems like everyone who goes back to the resort for a mid day break heads to the pool. The last thing I want to do after spending the day outside at MK is to go back to my room, get everyone in bathing suits, go back outside in the heat and spend time in the pool, go back to the room and "de-pool" everyone, then get dressed and head back out to a park for the evening. I'm not the only one, am I? end rant/

Ha ha...totally agree with you...especially when you have younger ones and so you (the parent) is responsible for getitng them dressed, towels, etc packed up, watching them like a hawk at the pool and the drying off and showers afterwards.

What we did was we had a 'day off from Disney parks'...where we enjoyed our resort (but not calling it relaxing...just different from walking lots at the park) , went to a closeby outlet mall and then headed over to Epcot in the evening. When we went to a park, we stayed at the park. The only time I could see leaving to go swimming would be if we were travelling in the summer when it was super hot.

When we went back to the resort for a swim, we usually ended up staying there. We're not commando people at all and three of the four of us often decided that we'd rather relax at the pool than go through the hassle of going back to the parks. DH was usually a little bit disgruntled and would go to the room to work. So yes, we did find swimming very relaxing -- so much so that we packed it in for the day once we hit the pools. For us they're a trap.

Swimming is a must for us on Disney vacations.

Totally. But the OP is talking about swimming as a break from the parks during the day. Park, swim, park. That's what she's talking about.

coming back to sit in the heat by the pool is not my idea of a good time.

Same.

When we take afternoon break we lay down in air conditioned room and take a nap.We are old though, whoa let me rephrase that or it will be 3 days before the swollen eyes to reopen, where I can see to post.I'm old and very young wife of 47 years take a nap. Can't remember exactly I think it was arranged marriage when she was 1yo and I was 10ish.

LOL.

Why are rant about something discretionary to each person? Do what makes you happy.

But...it can be good for newbies to read. You read so many people talking about taking breaks and swimming etc, and if you find that your family is utterly wiped out by doing that, you think "what's wrong with us?" To find out ahead of time that some people are rejuvenated by it and some people are not is a good thing!

I don't even take *breaks* at Disneyland. We go until we want to leave, then we leave. If we swim when we get back from the park(s), we're done.

Yes. :)

When we had really young kids, we didn't stay on Disney grounds. We went from morning until evening and then came back to swim before bed. Then when we started staying on Disney property, we loved the afternoon break. We were at the quiet pool in the morning on our off day or afternoon for our break. We found that a shower midday was just what we needed to feel rejuvenated before an evening in the park. Now I love the quiet pool. I got back, change quickly and it totally relaxes me enough to grab a nap and fresh clothes for the evening. For us, it is a part of everyday but probably 1 or 2. Of course, this year we are there 14 days. I am not sure how a pool would work out for a 4-5 day trip. Think of it this way, if we all go back to the pool in the afternoon, then you have less people in the park! lol

The pool is a lot of work. Our DD has long hair that knots so easy, so when it's wet it's a nightmare to comb out, then I'd have to dry it before going back to the parks. Now that she's older it's not as bad, but she still doesn't blow dry or fix it by herself. Personally my idea of a relaxing break from the parks is coming back to the room, laying down, watching tv, & rehydrating.

I am not much of a pool person. I do sometimes go back to rest in a nice cool air conditioned room, but coming back to sit in the heat by the pool is not my idea of a good time.

This counts as coming back & taking a break...You don't necessarily have to go to the pool...Just because I come back and maybe take a nap at the pool/ without swimming doesn't mean I'm relaxing....You could just peruse the resort grounds/shops/stores ( in AC ) too.

Our DD loves going back to get in the pool. I can take it or leave it But, Sitting in a lounge watching her swim with a 16ozer in my hand. Ahhh. Now that is relaxing!

Putting on the sunscreen is my least favorite aspect of taking DD to the pool, but I am lucky. My amazing husband will swim with her so I get to lay on lawn chair and relax. Now, if I have to take DD all by myself, not so relaxing! But it is a great way to cool off!

But swimming tires out DD, so we don't swim after a park day unless we don't have evening dining or park plans. For our upcoming October trip, I've built in a pool/resort day.

Disney trips for us at least aren't all about the parks anymore.....

It's the resorts, the activities, the restaurants, Yes the parks too.

When we stay at AKL/V you really get submersed in the resort....Both times we went , it was almost like 2 vacations within a vacation. Because when you come back from the park, you kinda forget where you are.

I'm sure other deluxes or Villas give you guys the same feel. Also Community Hall is a good way to break up the time, and keep them busy as well...Just sayin.:confused3

We are exactly the same. Our breaks are 4 hours in the middle of the day, so we have plenty of time to get out to the pool. But we don't have little ones, everyone in our family can get ready themselves.

Every time we stay at Fort Wilderness, I could stay at the cabin pool all day. It's surrounded by trees, has a nice hot tub, we can always get a table, and I get totally relaxed and calm. It's the reason we go on vacation - to relax. I know people say they'll relax when they go home, but this is vacation, darn it!!

The afternoon activities at OKW are the ones we usually participate in. Family bingo, trivia - it's so nice to relax, grab a Margarita from the Gurgling Suitcase, and chill. Can't wait to be there in November lol.

We swim just about every day in WDW (where weather permits) - we just do it at the beginning or end of our day. We do not take swim breaks in the middle of the day.

My kids are 15 and 9. I think at times they enjoy the pool as much, if not more, than the parks. We don't have a pool at home and we live in NJ so swimming is only in the summer, not year round.

We do midday breaks at the pool. We go in August. When we went in March we didn't do midday breaks everyday since park hours were shorter and the weather didn't always cooperate. It was too cold some days. In March out of 7 days we probably hit the pool 4 times. In August everyday of our trip we stop by the pool.

My kids are old enough to change themselves so it's not a problem for me. While they swim and do the water slide I lounge by the pool with a drink. I'll jump in a few times to cool down.

Our PM park is our relaxing time. We aren't commando. The kids aren't exhausted. They just go go go while at WDW but I do put in rest days and sleep in days.
