A Really Strange Question!

OK...This question may seem a bit odd...but, here goes....We live in a plain old ranch house...with a fenced in yard....and have three dogs...Two schnauzers and a German Pointer....(There is also a dog pen in the fenced in yard)...When my dogs need to be let out...I just open up my patio door and tell them to "Get into the Pen" to do their jobs...When they have finished...I open up the door and call them in.

Now, I have always wondered...What do people do with their pets who live in the high rise apartments? I've seen on TV...where they are coming down the elevator with their dog on a leash for a "walk"...sometimes really large dogs...If my dogs want to be let out in the middle of the night at times...it's so convenient...Again...I just open up the door...What do people do who live several flights up...do when the dog has to go at two in the morning? Are these dogs...including the large ones..."paper trained"?

They are just trained not to go at 2 in the morning! Generally the dog gets used to it, and know it will go out at 7 in the morning, at 5 after work, and at 9 before bed (for example). My friends never had any "accident" per see.

I'll have to ask one of my co-workers. She has mentioned to me that she has to clean up little accidents from time to time. I've often wondered myself what her dog does all day because she's here for about 10 hours a day.

I live in a townhouse without a privacy fence at the back on my yard [only privacy fences are between the houses]. Living in Mississauga ~ the land of the paths ~ there is a public path at the end of my unfenced yard.

I have an 18 month old black lab / border collie mix, Brigid, named after the Celtic Goddess. Her mom was a Hurricane Katina rescue. We adopted her from the States. She is incredible! So smart! A real princess....southern Belle!


I let her out in the morning, when I wake....sometimes that's 7am, sometimes 10am. I'm not supposed to let her out without a leash, but I do. I just open the back door, say, "Go pee." She does and runs back in. She occasionally will run after a squirrel, but she comes back when I call her.

Because I am home at some point during the day, I'll take her for a walk....in the land of the paths. DH takes her out for a walk after dinner and then he lets her out for a pee at 11pm. She is good all night, just sleeps.

We like taking her for walks for the exercise. Since she is part border collie and loves to run, we take her to dog parks too.

She loves coming to the trailer and camping too!

I love my dog!

We have a friend with a pug she has litter trained...she used to have a cat that used the toilet...not sure how long that took to train though

Wouldn't that be wonderful if there were "doggie toliets" available...and the dogs actually could be trained to use them?

My problem is...Let's say I went out for the evening...and didn't come in until 2:00 AM...No matter what...When I come home...my dogs need to be let out...Do you think it's just a habit?

I was just always curious...watching a program on TV...and seeing the "Detective" coming home late from working at a crime scene...His dog greets him at the door and is jumping all over him...He says, "Hey Sport...I know I've been gone too long....Did you miss me?"....After the dog gets all of the attention needed....He goes and plops down on the floor...Hmmmm.....My dogs would have to be let out....

I have a min-pin, she's litter trained. We used to live in a hi-rise and work full-time. Now that we live in a house it's much better, but she still used her litter for emergencies when we work all day.

That makes sense...I kept thinking...when the dogs are puppies and have to be let out more often...how would people in the high rise do that all the time..? Having them trained on paper would do the trick....
