I thought I read somewhere (here on the boards?) that Florida doesn't charge the one way car rental fee? Am I wrong/going crazy? If I rent a car from a Disney resort and return to port canaveral (or from port to mco), I have to pay the extra fee?!!!

Its not the state that makes this charge, its the car rental company. There is no cross the board answer to this. It depends on the rental company and the rate code you use for booking.

I've never gotten a one-way fee. And while I'd read that FL doesn't charge it, I've read of other poeple being charged one-way fees. So it must be a combo of when and where, and from whom, you're renting.

I just looked at July 20-23, Car Care Center to Cape Canaveral, for Alamo and National, and got no one-way fee. Looked at Dollar going from a WDW-area location to Cape Canaveral and again got no fee. Not sure if I feel like continuing*, but for you it's worth looking at other agencies to see what they are charging.

*Thrifty, same basics, no fee. Hertz, same.

I found cheaper rate from mco to cape canaveral...vs from the car care center to cape canaveral. Not sure if that can be an option for you. And it was also cheaper thru mousesavers... :flower:

There used to be such a law (regulation). Florida wanted tourists to have the opportunity to visit different parts of the state. That law has long since been repealed (or the rental agencies learned how to ignore it).

You need to run a quote. Run it with any discount program you're eligible to use. Also run it without any code. Some discount codes aren't applicable for one way rentals. Run the quote and your rate will bump up to maximum rate. Some carriers have a one way fee, some limit the number of free miles applicable to a one way rental and some black out some discounts. That can vary from quote to quote. An agency who needs to move a car from one location to another will have a lower fee. A company which doesn't need a car in your drop location will charge a fee In an extreme case the fee covers the cost of an employee deadheading the car to another location.

Any price quote or confirmation that you get should include the fee if applicable. So there shouldn't be any surprise fee at drop off.

Some have a one way fee that shows on the reservation (Thrifty and Dollar come to mind) and many don't tack on a separate one way fee but you will quite often find that the cost of the one way rental is high anyway. It's like thy don't tell you that they are charging you a one-way fee... they just include it in the rental price.
DW and I have come across this before on one way rental quotes.
A couple of years ago we had a one-way rental booked from MIA to MCO after a cruise. We kept the car for a week.
Dollars price was $92 for a full size for the week + a $60 oneway dropoff fee + $80 taxes and fees total just over $230.
A quote from Alamo for the same dates and size was $149 + $80 taxes and fees, came out to around $230 also. No One-way fee, but they are definitely building it into the rental price.

Oh I was just trying to help you. I don't have a trip. :) Just showing that it doesn't always get charged!

And I was pricing out resort area to the port because:

If I rent a car from a Disney resort and return to port canaveral (or from port to mco)

:)

If you need to get there for a rental, they will pick you up and take you to the CCC. You just need to call and make arrangements with them.
